Duties include, but are not limited to:
Independently reviews, designs and plans social sciences research projects that include project definition, statistical and sampling techniques using tools required to analyze and interpret data provided by stakeholders.
Utilize advanced skills in descriptive and quantitative statistical concepts including central tendency variability & standard error comparisons, correlational and predictive measures, regression analysis, and Bayesian analysis.
Provides information and technical assistance to agency staff on research and evaluation issues.
Conducts qualitative interviews onsite or virtually and completes written thematic content analysis as required.
Contributes to the Department's internal and external publications.
Develops social sciences statistical and conceptual models for social science research and evaluation projects.
Develop graphic presentations.

The research assistant position is an entry-level, full-time role for professionals who would like to gain clinical research experience. Summary:

**Job Summary**
As a **Biologist II** , you will be joining a dynamic team performing applied laboratory research across a diverse range of biological disciplines and advancing computational biology through artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) tools supporting national security, environment and infrastructure, and health challenges. The successful candidate will leverage their experience and expertise to develop and refine AI/ML tools to enhance analytical methods, create digital twin frameworks and virtual test beds, and support programs that will advance, inform, and validate operational tests, risk assessments, and threat assessments. Operating in a collaborative environment, you will provide invaluable support to computational, laboratory, and literature-based studies and help to mentor and train other staff. Additionally, you will actively identify and capitalize on opportunities to lead projects that enhance capabilities and foster the development of novel technical approaches. **Responsibilities**
+ Apply experience of biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, and/or microbiology to design and execute laboratory-based experiments.
+ Apply experience with AI/ML to develop, or assist with development of, AI/ML algorithms and AI frontier models.
+ Work independently to meet study objectives and deliverables with guidance from senior scientists.
+ Independently troubleshoot programs and experiments using experience and scientific literature.
+ Mentor lab personnel.
+ Analyze and interpret data and prepare technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
+ Follow established safety guidelines to safely work with hazardous/infectious (RG2) materials.
Some domestic travel is possible but not anticipated.
**Key Qualifications**
+ PhD or MS and >2 years or BS and >5 years of experience in a relevant biological discipline.
+ Familiarity with AI/ML programming languages (e.g., Python, R, Java, Julia, C++, etc.)
+ Familiarity with using biology-specific large language models in biological research topics. Examples include, but are not limited to, BioGPT, BioMedLM, and GeneGPT.
+ Expertise designing and executing experiments rooted in a biological discipline.
+ Proficiency with applicable open source software tools.
+ Proven ability to conduct experiments according to standard operating procedures.
+ Good oral and written communication skills.
+ The ability to work in a team environment and train less experienced staff.
+ U.S. citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances as a condition of employment.
+ Sufficiently medically fit to work in the laboratory to perform assigned duties including the ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE), lift up to 50 pounds, and work in the proximity of hazardous/infectious materials.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Demonstrated experience incorporating an AI/ML tool into a computational workflow. Examples include, but are not limited to, developing or utilizing a ML classification model, fine-tuning a BERT model, or implementing a large language model into a tool.
+ Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO17025, GLP).

Responsibilities
Leverage skills and education to identify, propose, and secure new projects to promote on contract growth and generate new revenue streams in applied virology.
Design and lead laboratory efforts with moderately sized teams of laboratory staff working in biological safety level (BSL)-2 and BSL-3 environments.
Work directly with project managers and customers to determine and execute study objectives and deliverables, including technical reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
Review, assimilate, collate, and translate data into key study findings. Identify gaps in current knowledge and leverage collective expertise and experience to drive the state of the art forward.
Troubleshoot experiments using experience and scientific literature.
Mentor lab personnel in virology and cell culture.
Follow established safety guidelines to identify potential hazards and to safely work with hazardous/infectious (risk group (RG)-2 and -3) materials; write and submit experimental safety plans and hazard analyses, as appropriate.
Apply experience in virology to novel multi-disciplinary (e.g., molecular biology, toxinology, cell biology, and microbiology) challenges.
Some domestic travel is anticipated.
Key Qualifications
PhD in virology or any related life science field with three or more years of laboratory experience in viral propagation.
Five or more years of experience in a laboratory-based facility and a proven ability to plan and conduct research studies.
Proven innovative thought, with an ability to pose novel research and development ideas in virology and adjacent fields.
Proven ability to conduct experiments according to standard operating procedures.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Proven ability to propose and secure research funding.
Ability to succinctly assimilate and communicate complex scientific data for customer and end user needs.
Ability to work in a team environment, mentor and train other staff members, and openly collaborate with colleagues across multiple disciplines.
Proven processes for collecting and maintaining accurate and detailed laboratory records (e.g., operating in accordance with a quality management system or framework).
Sole U.S. citizenship, with the ability to obtain and maintain required government security clearances (TS/SCI) as a condition of employment.
Ability and willingness to work in BSL-2 and -3 laboratories and to receive immunizations that may be required to perform BSL-3 work; hands-on experience working in a BSL-3 or higher laboratory is highly preferred.
Sufficiently medically fit to work in the laboratory to perform assigned duties including the ability to wear personal protection equipment (PPE), lift up to 50 pounds, and work in the proximity of hazardous/infectious materials.
Preferred Qualifications
Currently possesses or has held (and can reinstate) government security clearance.
Practical experience working with diverse and/or emerging viruses of importance to public health, agriculture, or the environment; additional experience with bacterial fungal pathogens and/or toxins may also be relevant to this position.
Practical experience recovering viruses from environmental (and other challenging) matrices.
Practical experience in bioaerosol experimentation.
Experience handling one or more of the following: coronavirus, VEE TC-83, adenovirus, orthopox viruses, etc.
Experience working within laboratory quality management systems (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO17025, GLP).
