The successful applicant will be an integral member of a collaborative team researching various aspects of Down syndrome using multiple omics-based approaches. Current areas of focus include:
The Human Trisome Project (***************** a large cohort study designed to understand why individuals with Down syndrome have a different clinical risk profile compared to the typical population.
Studying the role of immune dysregulation and hyperactive interferon signaling in Down syndrome.
Understanding molecular and genomic features of co-occurring conditions in individuals with Down syndrome.
This position is responsible for performing rigorous analysis and integration of multiple -omics datasets in collaboration with other scientists on the team. The successful candidate will have extensive computational and analytical skills and a demonstrated ability perform the tasks outlined below.
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
Working collaboratively with other members of the team to provide high-level, professional, and scientifically rigorous data management and bioinformatic analyses.
Developing and implementing complex analysis pipelines, programming, and data visualization techniques for multi-layered -omics datasets with a particular focus on single cell RNAseq and CyTOF analysis of peripheral and tissue-resident innate and lymphoid immune cell populations. Application of these techniques for more broad analysis of the transcriptome, metabolome, proteome, and epigenome will also be expected.
Creatively and effectively integrating data from multiple sources to accelerate discoveries.
Thinking independently and creatively to identify and implement best-practice bioinformatic and data management solutions.
Creating and disseminating tools for all team members to access relevant clinical and sample data.
Collaborating with other team members to co-author abstracts, oral and poster presentations, and scientific manuscripts.

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Deputy Director for the John Gardner Center, the Quantitative Research Associate collaborate with Gardner Center staff and community partners to design and carry out rigorous, actionable, and capacity building research that responds to the partner's needs and enables them to make research-informed decisions that advance their efforts to improve the lives of youth, families, and communities.
CORE DUTIES:
* Develop and carry out research designs that utilize the most robust quantitative methods possible given project parameters (e.g., timeline, budget). This includes collecting, securing, cleaning, verifying, documenting, coding, and analyzing data using a variety of methods.
* Ensure quantitative and qualitative dimensions of a study are seamlessly integrated from initial design through final reporting.
* Meet with partners on an ongoing basis to review research activities, interim findings, and evolving analyses.
* Communicate research findings to a variety of interested, invested, and impacted parties, including academic and community audiences. This may include writing and presenting interim research updates, non-technical research summaries, and peer-reviewed studies for leading peer-reviewed journals.
* Participate actively as a collaborative member of the Gardner Center team, contributing to a vibrant, generative community dedicated to community engaged scholarship in the service of ensuring the wellbeing of our most vulnerable youth, families, and communities. The biologist will be responsible for:

Required Qualifications & Skills
A Bachelor's degree in Biology (a Master's degree can substitute for one year of experience)
6+ years of experience as a professional consulting biologist in Northern California with at least 3 years of experience in Santa Cruz and Monterey Counties.
Experience conducting focused nesting bird surveys and the ability to identify northern CA and central coast bird species and identify breeding/nesting bird behaviors as well as the knowledge to select appropriate protection buffers during compliance monitoring. Must be able to provide guidance to clients on avoidance of impacts to nesting birds.
Experience with identification of northern CA and central coast California wildlife and plant species.
Experience with federal or state listed or otherwise considered sensitive species including focused and protocol surveys for those species and making recommendations to project managers to avoid impacts (i.e., choosing or implementing appropriate mitigation).
USFWS 10a1A permit with Monterey and/or Santa Cruz County species or show evidence of previous listing as Independent Investigator on another permit.
Experience with conducting construction monitoring, environmental compliance, and providing education programs to construction personnel. Ability to work collaboratively with construction personnel, environmental compliance manager, and project managers to develop solutions while implementing permit conditions.
Have an understanding of CEQA, NEPA, resource agency permits, and local MSHCPs concepts and requirements.

Work Environment
This candidate will need to collaborate effectively with team leads and other staff. This candidate needs to be able to complete project work independently, with minimal supervision.
