Qualifications: 1.Ph.D. degree in Organic Chemistry, Polymer Chemistry, Material Science, food Science or a related discipline with 0-2 years of relevant experience. 2.Proven experience in natural products chemistry, flavor chemistry and formulation design. 3.Knowledge of polymer material structure-property relationships and analytical characterization techniques (Rheometer, DSC, TGA, FTIR, NMR, particle size analyzer etc.). 4.Competence with the use of modern spectroscopic methods to determine structure of organic compounds, including HPLC, GC, HPLC-MS. Experience in maintaining related instruments is highly preferred. 5.Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and contribute to a positive and productive work culture. ROLES / RESPONSIBILITES Build and optimize a robust cGMP compliant platform for generation, expansion and cryopreservation of autologous induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) from peripheral blood derived CD34+ cells. Differentiate iPSCs to retinal pigment epithelial cells (RPE) to develop an iRPE patch for a phase I clinical trial to treat "dry" age related macular degeneration. Update and validate SOPs related to CD34 expansion, iPSC culturing, and RPE differentiation Manage a day to day operation of GMP facility Maintain iPSC colonies and freeze their early passages. GMP and aseptic culturing of iPCSs and differentiation of patient iPSCs into Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) and maintenance of those RPE cultures. This work will include: Preparing media, supplements, and reagents needed cell culture work. Maintaining the cell culture room biosafety level 2 standards and maintaining aseptic conditions in cell culture flow hoods, incubators, and prepare sterile tools needed for work with cell cultures. The cell culture maintenance work will require working for short periods of times on the weekends and some holidays. Work to characterize the iPSC colonies for their pluripotency. This will require: Immunostaining of iPSCs, preparing RNA and cDNA from iPSCs, and Performing qRT-PCR assays. Additionally they will perform three germ layer assay based functional characterization of iPSCs. This work will also include any cell types that act as control for his iPSC work. Prepare regulatory documents for FDA and technology transfer Coordinate transfer of lab-technology to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP suite) Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) with the Contract Research Organization (CRO) in relation to the cell therapy project. Job Description BACKGROUND The National Biodefense Analysis and Countermeasures Center (NBACC) is a one-of-a-kind facility located on Fort Detrick in Frederick MD and is dedicated to defending the nation against biological threats. Its work supports DHS and National biodefense preparedness planning, response, emerging threat characterization and bioforensic analyses. It is the first national laboratory created by DHS in response to biodefense gaps identified following the Amerithrax attacks of 2001 and has been operated by the Battelle National Biodefense Institute (BNBI) since 2006. Since its inception, NBACC and its staff have filled critical shortfalls in our scientific knowledge of biological agents needed to protect the public and defend the Nation from biological threats, whether naturally occurring, accidental, or deliberate and provided federal law enforcement with scientific data to support the investigation and attribution of biocrimes and protection of the US bioeconomy. NBACC includes two centers: the National Bioforensic Analysis Center (NBFAC), which conducts the technical analyses in support of federal law enforcement investigations, and the National Biological Threat Characterization Center (NBTCC), which conducts experiments and studies to obtain data required for a better understanding of biological vulnerabilities and hazards. PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES Provides technical and laboratory expertise to perform research in BSL-2, 3, & 4 laboratories aimed at addressing viral and/or toxin characterization knowledge gaps, such as evaluation of viral/toxin production, environmental decay, and virulence/toxicity. Collaborates with other scientific staff to identify and implement continued process improvements to NBTCC cell culture operations. Provides support to virus and toxin-based assays in BSL-2, 3, & 4 laboratories based upon NBTCC project requirements. Contributes in matrixed and cross-functional research teams that may include Aerobiology, Bacteriology, and Comparative Medicine (veterinary) staff. Adapts to potentially rapidly changing and high tempo project requirements to address national security issues with flexibility and resiliency. Collects/analyzes technical and programmatic data as part of a project team in support of Project Lead or Principal Investigator. Performs quality control and peer review of data as assigned. Develops high-quality draft protocols and task-specific procedures. Identifies and documents inconsistencies among NBACC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) or deviations from them and promptly reports these to the Project Lead and/or management. Supports Principal Investigators during the writing of technical reports through review and summary of experimental records, initial processing and QC of raw data, and technical review of methods and data. May be appointed as a Lab Space Manager (LSM) and/or Biological Select Agents and Toxins (BSAT) designee. Possesses the ability to work on multiple scientific tasks simultaneously, while performing assignments outside of area of expertise. Exercises judgment within generally defined practices and policies in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. Follows established procedures on routine work, requires instruction only on new assignments, and is self-sufficient in monitoring and reporting on quality, and compliance. Participates in the testing and evaluation of new technologies and protocols including writing and updating SOPs, work instructions and forms to improve NBACC's ability to serve its customers. Identifies departures from the Quality Management System (QMS) and initiates actions to investigate and prevent such occurrences. With minimal supervision, operates, maintains, and characterizes the performance of equipment ensuring the reagents and supplies are maintained and used properly. Serves as a member of a team in developing, validating, and maintaining methods for identifying and characterizing biological threat agents. Research Associates at the Environmental Law Institute help grow dynamic initiatives in the environmental law and policy research space. The Research Associate position is an entry-level position that begins in Summer 2026 and ends in Summer 2028. WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING? Each year, ELI hires college graduates to serve as Research Associates. These staff members work directly with the lawyers, policy experts, and scientists in the Research and Policy Division on projects addressing environmental and natural resource protection, climate, public health, environmental justice, and pollution prevention. A typical workload combines research, writing, and administration. The Research and Policy Division publishes research studies and conducts a variety of training courses and workshops. Specific subject areas include air and water quality, climate change, renewable energy, hazardous waste and brownfields, green computing, international environmental policy and institutions, sustainable land use, biodiversity and species conservation, wetlands management, freshwater and ocean policy, environmental health, and environmental enforcement.
