Position description: Provide broad technical research and management support for the LSU AgCenter Central Station Horse and Sheep/Goat Units. Requires knowledge of research procedures and philosophy, and practical application in a field research setting. Specific responsibilities will include day-to-day management of horses, goats and sheep, which supports teaching, research, and extension functions for the School of Animal Sciences. Duties include animal health care and biosecurity, research data collection, production records, animal inventory maintenance, and related duties. Responsibilities also include pasture management, infrastructure maintenance, farm equipment maintenance and repair, general budget management, and supervision of two full-time employees and numerous part-time student workers. This position reports to the Resident Director of Central Research Station administratively but works closely with faculty and the administrative head of the School of Animal Sciences with respect to teaching, research, and extension programs. This position will also be expected to interact with, assist, and support Animal Science Department graduate students, the AgCenter Institutional Veterinarian, the LSU School of Veterinary Medicine, and with any other departmental personnel conducting research or teaching activities at this location. The successful candidate will also assist in lectures within their area of expertise and oversee laboratories taught at the Horse and Sheep/Goat units.
Qualification Requirements: Baccalaureate and/or Master's degree in Animal Science or closely related field. Knowledge and experience in working in an agricultural research setting dealing with animal production and a working knowledge of farming practices, including pesticide applications and operation of farm machine1y is highly desirable. Desire practical experience in managing animal herds (horses, goats, sheep) and organizational skills to maintain records and assist in data collection; computer skills are required.

The biologist will work under the direction of the Manager of Conservation Programs for South Louisiana and become part of a team of biologists, engineers, and other professionals that are based out of Lafayette, Louisiana. The focus of this position will primarily be the enhancement and restoration of wetlands and associated habitats important to migrating waterfowl and other wetland dependent fish and wildlife species. This position will assist with implementing conservation projects on private and public lands in South Louisiana.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in a natural resources field-an advanced degree is desired.
Applicants must also have at least five years of relevant experience and be knowledgeable about wetland and waterfowl ecology and management.
A strong background in ornithology with an emphasis on waterfowl and other wetland dependent birds is desired.
Experience in providing technical assistance to landowners on how to better manage wetlands for waterfowl is also desired.
Related experience in soil and water conservation as it pertains to rice agriculture is preferred but not necessary.
An FAA Remote Pilot Certificate for commercial drone operation is beneficial but not required.
Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential.
Proven proposal/grant writing skills, project management capabilities, and wetland restoration and enhancement experience are necessary.
Familiarity with the region's biological resources, local and regional environmental issues, and private and public stakeholders is beneficial.

Successful candidate will be responsible for administering and managing the Louisiana Waterfowl Project and Louisiana Mottled Duck Project. Two well-funded programs focused on restoring and enhancing waterfowl and wetlands habitat on private lands.
Duties for these programs include identifying potential projects, working closely with private landowners, providing technical assistance, coordinating with DU engineers, negotiating and executing agreements, managing project and program budgets, ensuring regulatory compliance, drafting reports, working with construction contractors, site monitoring, maintaining relationships with public and private partners, and obtaining funding from a wide variety of sources for project work.
This also includes writing and submitting proposals to various agencies, foundations, and other funding sources to secure project funds.
Successful candidate must also assist with fundraising and outreach events, represent DU at wetland conservation venues/events, and help with other conservation activities.
Candidate would be required to establish and maintain relationships with key DU volunteers and development staff and provide DU management with timely communication on project work/issues.
Finally, this role will assist communication staff with developing articles to promote and describe DU projects.

Minimum Qualifications
1). A bachelor's degree in chemistry, microbiology, biology or a closely related field.

3). Possess data handling skills, including facility with Microsoft Office or similar programs, generating emails, as well as laboratory information management systems (LIMS).

SCOPE OF WORK
The Microbiologist III will provide research services to enhance the understanding of infection caused by
Mycobacterium leprae
(
M. leprae
) and
Mycobacterium lepromatosis (M. lepromatosis)
.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Microbiologist III shall perform the following tasks:
Design and develop molecular assays to determine viability of leprosy complex bacteria from infected animal tissues. Applications shall include evaluation of fixation protocols (e.g., Ethanol, formalin-fixed and paraffin-embedded), purification of nucleic acids, quantitation of bacterial numbers, and expression of relevant genes.
Perform various molecular assays on clinical biopsy samples from leprosy patients across the leprosy spectrum.
Applications shall include refinement of established protocols to obtain optimum performance with human tissue samples.
Design and perform experiments evaluating new anti-leprosy drugs and drug regimens utilizing the mouse footpad model of leprosy complex bacterial infection.
Formulate complex hypotheses regarding the relationship of the host immune response with leprosy complex bacteria viability and the expression of bacterial or host genes in
in-vitro
culture and from infected tissues by using techniques like real-time PCR, whole genome sequencing and RNASeq.
Design new primer/probe sets and assess their suitability for use as improved expression markers for detecting viable leprosy complex bacteria in clinical and experimental samples.
Document all experimental procedures. Compile and analyze all experimental data.
Synthesize information suitable for critical review and publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Maintain and submit written documentation/work products in the following formats:
Word document: Reports and manuscripts for publication.
Excel: Spreadsheets and Tables of experimental data.
PowerPoint: Presentations for review of progress.
Statistical Analysis Software (SAS): statistical analysis of data.
Handwritten: Daily progress entries into laboratory notebook.
Submit Monthly and Quarterly progress reports as follows:
Monthly Reports: Provide a summary of the work completed during the month and shall include experiments performed, data collected, and interpretation of the data.
Quarterly Reports: Provide a written report of the tasks completed during the quarter and present the data for discussion and planning of future directions.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Ph.D. degree in Animal Science, Biology, Microbiology, Immunology, or related discipline required, Master's degree preferred
Required:
Minimum of 3 years of laboratory experience using molecular, immunological, and microbiology techniques.
Experience developing, validating, implementing, and troubleshooting molecular-based assays.
Experience working with pathogenic bacteria.
Expert knowledge and ability to perform molecular techniques to include PCR, sequencing, basic gene cloning techniques, gene expression, bacterial growth, and gel electrophoresis.
Demonstrated experience in the synthesis of laboratory data and development of new experiments to further a research goal/objective.
Excellent skills in documentation, and knowledge of safety requirements for research being performed.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, for interaction with internal and external stakeholders.
Experience with Microsoft Office, including demonstrated experience with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
Demonstrated experience in the statistical analysis of laboratory results, including the use of statistical analysis software such as SAS, SPSS, or similar.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and yet maintain the flexibility to respond to requests for support of ongoing projects.
