Project Abstract:
Project Abstract: Eastern Red Cedar (Juniperus virginiana) is native to the eastern United States, where this attractive tree has been a popular choice for landscaping. But out in the Great Plains, Red Cedar is known as the "green glacier", because this slow-growing species is taking over once-productive grasslands. Ranchers face substantial economic costs in removing Red Cedar from grazing lands, and it reduces grassland biodiversity through competition with native species. But how do you stop a "green glacier"? Populations might be expanding because environmental variability has altered frost and drought regimes, or because humans have implemented prairie management practices such as fire suppression, or even because of changes in the migration patterns of seed-dispersing birds. It is more likely, however, that many factors are at work. For example, environmental variability might allow plants to move into a new region, but seed dispersal by birds could promote population expansion within a region. Rather than focus on one factor, this study will determine the relative importance of several causal factors. Data from experiments will be used in a model that predicts the rate and locations where Red Cedar range expansion is likely to occur. Findings will be presented to the public at the Holden Arboretum Scientist Lecture Series and incorporated into Holden Arboretum's "Working with Nature" K-12 Camp and "Tree Corp" adult workforce development program.
Uncovering scale-dependent mechanisms controlling range and niche expansion of plants is a key issue in biodiversity research. This work integrates physiological and ecological processes across scales to determine the potential for further range expansion. The central hypothesis is that, at a large spatial scale, changes in prairie management are more important than physiological climate tolerance for promoting range expansion, while at smaller scales, biotic factors such as avian dispersal, competition and facilitation are more important. The spatial scale of variation will be determined using microsatellites in historical, encroaching and niche expanding populations. The effects of fire will be examined using long-term data from the Konza Prairie NSF-LTER, while manipulative and field experiments will determine how the interaction of frost and drought impact Red Cedar performance. Seed dispersal by birds and changes in bird migration over time will be examined to determine how far, and where, birds disseminate Red Cedar. Empirical data will be integrated into a spatially explicit population-level age/stage matrix model, based on inputs from structural equation modeling at all three spatial scales, with spatial resolution determined by the results of microsatellite studies.

Clarence Ward and Ellen B. Weiss '57 Postdoctoral Fellow in Modern Architectural History
Research fellow job in Oberlin, OH
The Department of Art History at Oberlin College invites applications for the Clarence Ward and Ellen B. Weiss '57 Postdoctoral Fellowship in Modern Architectural History, a full-time non-continuing faculty position in the College of Arts and Sciences. Initial appointment to this position will be for a term of two years [4 semesters], beginning fall 2026. Agreement between the department and the incumbent can renew the position for a third year as Visiting Assistant Professor of Modern Architectural History.
About
Founded in 1833, Oberlin is a private four-year, selective liberal arts college near Cleveland, Ohio and is also home to an outstanding Conservatory of Music. Together, the two divisions enroll approximately 2900 students. Oberlin College was the first college in the US to make interracial education and co-education central to its mission. The College continues to view a diverse, equitable and inclusive educational environment as essential to the excellence of its academic program. Among liberal arts colleges, Oberlin is a national leader in successfully placing graduates into PhD programs.
Oberlin is a microcosm of modern architectural history. The campus was shaped by the Olmsted Brothers and by pioneering landscape architect Beatrix Farrand, and Oberlin is home to works by Joseph Lyman Silsbee, Arthur Bates Jennings, Cass Gilbert, Frank Lloyd Wright, Hugh Asher Stubbins, Jr., Wallace Harrison, Minoru Yamasaki, M. Rosaria Piomelli, Robert Venturi, and Maya Lin.
Faculty and classes in Oberlin's Department of Art History utilize the collections of the Allen Memorial Art Museum, one of the best college art museums in the United States, and the Oberlin College Art Library. Oberlin College has unique resources for the teaching of architectural history. The Thomas Jefferson Architectural Books Collection, housed at the Oberlin College Libraries, matches on a one-to-one basis titles owned by Jefferson in either identical or earlier editions. The Oberlin College Visual Resources Collection maintains a large collection of glass lantern slides and photographic study prints of global architecture, while the Oberlin College Archives and Special Collections house and actively collect original books, manuscripts, photographs, and objects for the study and teaching of global architectural history.
The title of this endowed postdoctoral fellowship honors two Oberlinians who made pivotal contributions to the study of architectural history. Clarence Ward was an influential historian of medieval European architecture who taught at Oberlin from 1916 to 1949, serving as the first director of the Allen Memorial Art Museum, chair of the Art Department, founder of the art library that bears his name, and designer of multiple campus buildings. Ellen B. Weiss '57 was a longtime professor of architecture at Tulane University, and authored the first monograph on Robert R. Taylor, the first accredited African American architect in the United States.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will teach a total of two courses annually in the general area of modern and contemporary architectural history. One of these will be an introductory survey course which must include material prior to the twentieth century. The other will be at the intermediate or advanced level, on a topic of the candidate's choice. This teaching load is intended to provide time for the postdoctoral fellow to research and write, as well as take advantage of the Department's and the College's support for pedagogical, scholarly, and professional development. The successful candidate is also encouraged to make use of an endowed fund in architectural history, named for Clarence Ward, which can be used to organize conferences, invite distinguished speakers, or facilitate other initiatives to improve the scope and rigor of the teaching of architectural history at Oberlin. If renewed for a third year as Visiting Assistant Professor, the candidate will teach five courses in the year of appointment: an introductory course repeated in the fall and spring semesters; two intermediate courses; and an advanced seminar.
The Department recognizes that modern architectural history is a capacious, dynamic field which considers high and vernacular practice, urbanism and public space, landscape architecture, the environment, industrial design, and theory and criticism. We are open to scholars working in any period or region after ca. 1750, and especially those whose teaching and scholarship explore diverse and intersecting perspectives, methodologies, and geographies.
Qualifications
Among the qualifications required for appointment is the Ph.D. degree (received after May 1, 2021 or expected by August 1, 2026). Candidates must demonstrate interest and potential excellence in undergraduate teaching. Successful teaching experience at the college level is desirable, as is the ability to teach from original objects and works of architecture. Oberlin College is committed to diversity, equity and inclusion. The incumbent will bring understanding of or experience working with underrepresented and diverse academic populations. Oberlin is especially interested in candidates who can contribute to the excellence and diversity of the academic community through their research, teaching, and service. Oberlin recruits, employs, trains, compensates, and promotes regardless of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, disability, age, veteran's status, and/or other protected status as required by applicable law.
