The principal function of the postdoc is to contribute to configuring an Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC) water quality model for the South Florida region and use this model to simulate and analyze past and projected regional patterns, with a focus on net primary production and subsequent carbon transport and settlement rates in and out of Biscayne Bay. The outputs of the coastal model will be used to characterize climate change impacts on water quality and carbon transport in and out of the estuary. Addition to the modeling efforts, the position will also have the tasks of constructing literature reviews and providing carbon data input for NOAA databases. The postdoc will be based at the NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida. She/he will be part of a multidisciplinary team, which includes researchers at NOAA, Mississippi State University, University of Miami, University of South Florida, Virginia Institute of Marine Sciences, Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, and Southeast Coastal Ocean Observing Regional Association.

Department Profile:
The Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Institute comprised of six academic institutions that are geographically distributed across the U.S. Gulf Coast states. The six NGI member institutions are Mississippi State University (lead), the University of Southern Mississippi, Florida State University, Louisiana State University, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory. Together with NOAA and in support of their strategic plan, NGI conducts research on interconnections among Gulf of Mexico environments, habitats, resources, and people and engages in outreach to help others learn about and make decisions based on these interconnections.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include but are not limited to:
• Perform a comprehensive collection and summarization of available observed data related with primary production modeling in Biscayne Bay
• Develop a conceptual model of primary production in the context of blue carbon capture based on the observed data availability
• Configure an estuarian water quality and biogeochemical model for the Biscayne Bay
• Conduct numerical model experiments
• Analyze and describe simulated patterns
Provide modeled carbon data to the designated NOAA databases
Construct literature reviews
• Participate in regular team meetings
• Present research results in scientific conferences and workshops
• Submit manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals

This is an advanced professional position in a county wide disease prevention program. * Conducting Complex Research studies for surveillance of disease and disease syndromes (of individuals and population outbreaks) to include diseases associated with food, water, and those suspected of being due to a weapon of mass destruction biological agents. Will also advise patients regarding their disease and how to prevent future occurrence (if the disease can recur).
* Initiate case investigations for reported diseases on the direction of surveillance and investigation supervisors during specified time intervals. This may include appropriate and targeted field investigations and notification of managers for appropriate action. The position involves looking at the data entered and writing reports. Also, provide oral and written presentations to both health department employees and the community.
* Investigate specialized research projects and give recommendations.
* Communications - Participate in teleconferences, Epicom, and various meetings where regional and state information is shared. Will visit and consult with community health care providers giving information to the current reporting requirements for communicable disease.
* Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Willing to work before, during, and/or beyond normal work hours or days in the event of an emergency. This may include working in a special needs or Red Cross shelter, or performing other emergency duties including, but not limited to, responses to or threats involving any disaster or threat of disaster, man-made or natural.
* A valid driver's license, free of major infractions and access to an automobile to be utilized for work purposes.

The Role

Department Profile:
The Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) is a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Cooperative Institute comprised of six academic institutions that are geographically distributed across the U.S. Gulf Coast states. The six NGI member institutions are Mississippi State University (lead), the University of Southern Mississippi, Florida State University, Louisiana State University, the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory. Together with NOAA and in support of their strategic plan, NGI conducts research on interconnections among Gulf of Mexico environments, habitats, resources, and people and engages in outreach to help others learn about and make decisions based on these interconnections.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
● Develop, select, and validate a suite of metabarcoding assays (six or more markers) for broad taxonomic coverage of marine eDNA.
● Perform and/or oversee the high-throughput metabarcode library preparation for approximately 4,000 marine eDNA samples, ensuring rigorous quality control and documentation.
● Leverage open-source bioinformatics pipelines for the processing and taxonomic assignment of all generated metabarcoding data.
● Lead the development of curated taxonomic reference databases, focusing on improving resolution for under-represented marine taxa, particularly pelagic lineages.
● In collaboration with project partners, develop and evaluate advanced computational tools and methods for taxonomic assignment.
● Manage the complete data lifecycle, ensuring all raw sequence data, processed taxonomic data, and associated metadata are submitted to public repositories (e.g., NCBI, OBIS) in compliance with FAIR data principles.
● Disseminate project findings through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences.
● Collaborate closely with the project team at AOML, NGI, WHOI, UCI, and the Minderoo Foundation.
Minimum Qualifications:
● A Ph.D. in molecular biology, computational biology, bioinformatics, genomics, marine science, or a closely related field.
● Demonstrated experience in molecular biology, specifically with DNA metabarcoding, PCR protocol development, and next-generation sequencing (NGS) library preparation.
● Substantial bioinformatics experience, including proficiency with the Unix command line, management of large sequencing datasets, and development/use of computational workflows.
● Strong programming and data science skills in languages such as Python and/or R.
● A record of scholarly achievement, evidenced by at least one first-author peer-reviewed publication.
● Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative research environment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
● Significant molecular biology experience including developing PCR protocols for DNA metabarcoding and downstream library preparation methods (e.g., library normalization and QA/QC).
● Demonstrated experience analyzing large-scale metabarcoding and/or metagenomic datasets using common bioinformatics tools (e.g., DADA2, QIIME) on high-performance computing (HPC) environments.
● Familiarity with developing and curating genetic reference databases for taxonomic assignment and using various taxonomic assignment algorithms and bioinformatics tools (e.g., BLAST, VSEARCH, naïve Bayes classifiers).
● A strong publication record, including first-author publications in relevant fields.
● Demonstrated commitment to open-source code and FAIR data management principles.
Working Conditions and Physical Effort

Frequent standing, walking, climbing or balancing required.
