Research Fellow in Machine Learning for Speech Processing

We are seeking applications for a research fellow at the University of Southampton within the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, to work in the area of machine learning for speech processing. The position is available on a fixed term basis until 31/01/2027.
You will be working on a Huawei-sponsored research project aimed at developing improved methods for processing speech in noisy and reverberant environments. You will work under the direction of the Principal Investigator, Prof Philip Nelson and in close collaboration with the project sponsors. The aim of the project is to investigate the use state of the art machine learning methods for improving the quality of speech in teleconferencing systems. An important feature of the work is to identify methods that can be used within the constraints provided by commercially available computational resources for real-time processing. As part of your role, you will:
Publish and disseminate your findings at top-tier venues (e.g., NeurIPS, ICLR, ICML, IEEE Transactions);
Collaborate with our project sponsors to ensure the commercial impact of your research;
Develop and participate in activities for engagement with the public, policymakers and key stakeholders.

Staff at this level will typically be leading smaller and/or less complex projects, playing a critical role as a team member on projects with specific technical/scientific expertise. Defense Acquisition Data Scientists are expected to support a range of projects including, but not limited to, analysis into defense acquisitions. Candidates are expected to be knowledgeable about defense acquisitions process and familiar with the data science toolkit.
The is part of the Center for Naval Analyses. The DSD provides data science expertise and support to the Department of the Navy and Department of Defense. The division has full time and part time analysts with advanced degrees in data science, operations research, statistics, economics, computer science, physics, mathematics, engineering, chemistry, and other technical disciplines.
The DSD develops models and analytics to support Navy problems across all Navy domains, including aviation, surface warfare, undersea warfare, cyber, logistics, readiness, force generation, sustainment, acquisition, and cost modeling. The division currently supports the Navy's Performance-to-Plan forum, which provides senior Navy leadership forward‑looking performance forecasts, which are foundational to articulating Navy progress toward readiness and capability goals.

Key Responsibilities:
Supervise and oversee the Research Coordinator, ensuring the effective implementation of the study on Down syndrome Regression Disorder.
Engage in relevant professional development such as an advanced trainee in the Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities and Related Disabilities (VA LEND) program, and/or Data Science.

* You will lead or participate in development and maintenance of software products. All products developed are in support of weapon system fire control, including internal tools, computationally intensive models, and tactical deployed systems.
* You will participate on an Agile development team, interfacing with Product Owners, Scrum Masters, project lead coordinators, configuration management, and customers to clarify tasking, identify problems, suggest changes, and develop solutions.
* You will participate in and present at Daily Standup Meetings, Sprint Planning and Refinement Meetings, and Sprint Reviews as well as sponsor level working groups, depending on tasking.

General Information:
This position will perform research for a grant that recruits middle and high school students from marginalized backgrounds into healthcare professions.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Duties include:
* compiling annotated bibliographies and demographic research on topics associated with grant activity
* writing short research reports
* deploying surveys and other data collection tools under guidance of investigators
* managing and compiling survey and other data collection results under the guidance of investigators
* other research duties as assigned that are appropriate to the grant project
Qualifications:
Primary Qualifications:
* Successful completion of IRB training in Human Subjects Research (Please attach proof of completion under Other Document #1)
* Must have completed at least one year of post-secondary academic experience (please attach your transcripts)
* Strong writing and research skills proven by a research paper written for a class
Secondary Qualifications
* Knowledge of statistical analysis demonstrated in classes taken
* Knowledge of research methods in health and/or social sciences demonstrated in classes taken

Community Awareness and Engagement

* Cultivate relationships with healthcare systems, community groups and organization, business, and other key stakeholders

* Coordination of bi-annual study related newsletter for community participants and partners
Coordination of Community Ambassadors

* Identify opportunities for community ambassadors to participate in community events and outreach.
Data Collection
* Assist study team with the development of consenting and data collection protocols
