Job Summary:
Performs and/or directs others in the installation, operation, repair and servicing of laboratory and field prototype models and test equipment. Conducts a variety of complex tests. Works independently and with technical managers, chemists, and laboratory technicians. Required to make independent decisions on implementing and coordinating the work assigned. Performs complex jobs and coordinates tasks of lower rated employees when required. Demonstrates knowledge of laboratory safety protocol and is takes lead role with customers and co-workers with questions around proper procedures and established protocols.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, but not limited to:
Conducts the most complicated tests developing specific methods in accordance with the general test requirements and approved procedures.
Secures and reviews all available information to become familiar with test objectives and to set up test equipment.
Aligns or coordinates alignment of instruments and equipment with items to be tested and records data as the test progresses.
Performs routine instrument maintenance.
Updates logbook documenting instrument and equipment performance.
Observes equipment for indications of failure or malfunction and repairs or adjusts components as required.
Conducts complicated tests or portions thereof, in accordance with approved test procedures.
Prepares test reports covering the results of tests conducted. Writes comprehensive description of test setup and procedures used, pertinent observations, and test results.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
Stops work without fear of reprisal for unsafe conditions potentially affecting personnel safety or environmental risk.
Qualify and maintain proficiency as a Laboratory Technician.

The Cardiac Specialty Unit consists of 33 telemetry beds.
Specialized care is delivered on The Cardiac Specialty Unit to patients presenting with chest pain or unstable angina, as well as those recovering from placement of cardiac stents, permanent pacemakers, or AICDs.
The top three admitting diagnoses for 3 Riverstone are Coronary Atherosclerosis, Intermediate Coronary Syndrome, and Cardiac Dysrhythmias.
We have long-term staff members because of our culture and teamwork on the floor. The physicians see this as well and trust the judgment of our team.
Our team includes high quality RNs, Patient Care Assistants and Health Unit Coordinators. Our staff work 12-hour shifts, 3 days per week and rotate every other weekend and holiday. We have a modified self-scheduling model that covers a six-week period to allow for flexibility. Modeling Plasma Material Interactions in Fusion Reactors - Research Assistant/Associate/Full Professor

The University of Tennessee has an opening for a Research Assistant/Associate Professor in the area of integrated plasma - material interaction modeling for fusion reactors. The successful candidate will be working with a new University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge Innovation Institute (UTORII) project to develop integrated models predicting fusion plasma facing armor component performance and using this insight in developing materials for extreme applications with a focus on fusion environments.
This work will be focused on utilizing a suite of computational boundary plasma physics and multiscale materials modeling techniques ranging from the SOL-PS and GITR codes for boundary plasma and impurity modeling, in addition to first principles- based electronic structure models to molecular dynamics and mesoscale models such as kinetic Monte Carlo or spatially-dependent reaction-diffusion-advection cluster dynamics. The integrated modeling of plasma material interactions also requires experience with code coupling frameworks such the integrated plasma simulator (IPS) framework to manage complex workflows associated with coupling plasma and material modeling codes.
The research faculty will work collaboratively with a team of faculty, postdoctoral associates, and students in Nuclear Engineering (NE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), and Physics, as well as scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Demonstrated Research Skills

The Research Scientist will be responsible for the following:
Designing and executing experiments to evaluate cold spray deposition performance across metals, polymers, spatially graded, and hybrid material systems.
Optimizing spray parameters for both high- and low-pressure systems to achieve robust bonding, dimensional accuracy, and repeatability.
Characterizing as-sprayed materials and build quality using microscopy, profilometry, ultrasonic inspection, and mechanical evaluation.
Studying particle-substrate interactions, critical velocity behavior, and deposition efficiency across various feedstock types and substrates.
Conducting post-process evaluations to assess performance metrics including adhesion, wear resistance, fatigue, and environmental durability.
Implementing and refining in-situ monitoring tools to measure particle velocity, substrate temperature, and deposition rate.
Developing models and data-driven methods to correlate process parameters with deposition quality and performance.
Support efforts in developing process qualification pathways and performance benchmarks for CSAM parts.
Mentoring students, technicians, and DoD collaborators in cold spray system operation, safety, experimental design, and data analysis.
Providing technical instruction on cold spray system capabilities, maintenance, and safe laboratory practices.
Overseeing the operation and maintenance of cold spray systems and supporting characterization tools.
Leading and supporting manufacturing demonstrations and development efforts with DoD and industry partners.
Hosting facility tours, technical briefings, and collaborative engagements with external stakeholders and sponsors.

The Research Scientist (Metallurgy) conducts applied and fundamental research involving alloy development, heat treatments, and advanced manufacturing of metallic components for defense applications. This role operates within UT's Defense Research Center, collaborating with government, industry, and academic partners to advance DoD-funded materials initiatives.
This position is responsible for leading and supporting fundamental and applied research in physical and mechanical metallurgy with a focus on advanced manufacturing methods for metallic systems in support of Department of Defense-funded initiatives. The scientist will conduct research on microstructure-process-property relationships, heat treatment strategies, and alloy development for a range of metallic materials-including aluminum alloys, high-strength steels, and refractory metals such as tungsten and molybdenum-and will qualify and optimize these materials for use in defense-critical components fabricated via Additive Friction Stir Deposition (AFSD), Cold Spray, and Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM).
This is a grant-funded position and is contingent upon the continued funding of the grant.
Required Qualifications
Education: Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related Engineering disciplines
Experience: 3 years of experience in metallurgy including heat treatments, microstructural characterization, and mechanical testing
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Knowledge of operation and ability to conduct heat treatment processes. Knowledge and operation of materials characterization techniques such as optical microscopy, SEM/EDS, EBSD, XRD, microhardness testing, and mechanical evaluation (tensile, compression, fatigue).
