This position will conduct research, innovation and development of new grower-focused products. Maintain trials, including irrigation, scouting for pests, and application of plant growth regulators and/or insecticides as needed for healthy crop production. Pour-through methods to measure pH and EC of pot leachate. Document trials with photos at the beginning and end, including photos of individual plant treatments. Transfer photos to computer and annotate/label crop photos. Reads and reviews research literature to generate innovative ideas for new product development. Identifies production or post-harvest related problems within industry, reviews literature to learn possible solutions and uses the information to improve or develop product solutions. Aseptic culturing techniques (including media). Maintain greenhouse and lab areas in a clean and organized manner. Maintain inventory and requisition supplies and chemicals. Who We Are Looking For: An individual with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in horticulture, environmental sciences, biology or botany is preferred. An individual who has a minimum of 1 to 2 years greenhouse floriculture or CEA experience is preferred. An individual with knowledge of greenhouse operations and management is preferred. An individual who has experience using Microsoft Office, Adobe Photoshop and SAS statistics is beneficial. An individual who is able to to learn new techniques and carry out experiments with minimal supervision. An individual who has an existing pesticide applicator license is a plus. OBJECTIVE The Research Associate 1 will oversee research projects within the lab, providing scientific oversight, guidance to lab members, and lab management in the absence of the principal investigator. The Research Associate will design and plan projects, oversee collaborations, oversee/supervise staff and students, and fully execute research projects. The Research Associate 1 will utilize a multitude of techniques such as cell culture, molecular biology, histology/microscopy, and animal studies. The Research Associate will keep the PI informed of progress of research projects and provide recommendations on experimental design and project plans. The Research Associate will independently prepare manuscripts. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Independently and with the principal investigator, design, plan, and execute research projects. Maintain accurate records of data and provide findings and recommendations to the PI based on analysis (45%). 2. Independently author research projects. Assemble data and make publication-quality figures from analyzed data. With the highest level of integrity and responsible conduct of research, participate in writing manuscripts as a first author and co-author for discoveries from research performed in the lab, together with the PI and other lab members (10%). 3. With the principal investigator, establish goals and objectives for the efficient and timely completion of projects. Meet regularly with the principal investigator to review and set priorities, staff/student-related issues, and future research staff and planning. Provide scientific oversight of all research projects, including data collection and maintenance. Establish and manage the day-to-day priorities of the research staff. Supervise and mentor research assistants and technicians. Supervise Coordinate experiments performed by other lab members, ensuring adequate resources, assisting with experimental design and analysis. Oversee progress of the research projects and provide regular progress reports to the PI; and provide input and recommendation to principal investigator regarding significant developments in research projects. Ensure the PI is informed about the results of lab members, and ensure the PI's experimental strategy is explored by lab members and through independent experiments by the Research Associate (10%). 4. Present data and findings at laboratory meetings and scientific meetings, seminars, etc. Prepare manuscripts, and contribute preliminary data for grant proposals (10%). 5. Mentor and train lab staff and graduate students; oversee research work and ensure projects are being completed according to the research plan. This will involve teaching other members of the lab techniques and scientific discovery methods, including students and post-docs. Assist and teach both established and new research techniques to other lab members to facilitate their experiments. Coordinate trainings for lab members with EHS and others as needed (10%). 6. May Supervise research assistants and technicians. Supervise the research and technical work performed by other lab members, ensuring proper lab procedures are followed, and their safety, and ensuring adequate resources are provided for lab work (10%). The Small Animal Imaging Core (SAIC), in Shared Laboratory Resources, is seeking a Research Associate who will support areas of preclinical multimodal imaging (e.g. MRI, CT, PET, bioluminescence, etc) for research. The successful applicant will have strong knowledge and research background in medical imaging (e.g MRI/MRS, CT, PET, 2D optical, etc), experience in programming languages (e.g., MATLAB, Python, AFNI, 3D Slicer, etc), and expertise in imaging processing & analysis. They will report to the SAIC Core Director and will be responsible for reporting progress to the PI on imaging experiments and data analysis. Examples of investigator research interests include but are not limited to: Cancer, Heart & Vascular, Inflammation, Neurological & Vision Major Duties/Responsibilities: * Support and collaborate with internal and external researchers on related projects that involve imaging. * Develop foundational imaging acquisition pipelines and imaging research capabilities for various research projects in areas of e.g. neurological disease, cancer biology, cardiovascular disease, etc. * Develop efficient computing algorithms and integrate, implement, and deploy image data processing and analyses workflows for the facility and research labs. * Write peer reviewed papers and technical reports. * Participate in conferences and contribute to facility and PI grant proposal development. But out in the Great Plains, Red Cedar is known as the "green glacier", because this slow-growing species is taking over once-productive grasslands. Ranchers face substantial economic costs in removing Red Cedar from grazing lands, and it reduces grassland biodiversity through competition with native species. But how do you stop a "green glacier"? Populations might be expanding because environmental variability has altered frost and drought regimes, or because humans have implemented prairie management practices such as fire suppression, or even because of changes in the migration patterns of seed-dispersing birds. It is more likely, however, that many factors are at work. For example, environmental variability might allow plants to move into a new region, but seed dispersal by birds could promote population expansion within a region. Rather than focus on one factor, this study will determine the relative importance of several causal factors. Data from experiments will be used in a model that predicts the rate and locations where Red Cedar range expansion is likely to occur. Findings will be presented to the public at the Holden Arboretum Scientist Lecture Series and incorporated into Holden Arboretum's "Working with Nature" K-12 Camp and "Tree Corp" adult workforce development program. Uncovering scale-dependent mechanisms controlling range and niche expansion of plants is a key issue in biodiversity research. This work integrates physiological and ecological processes across scales to determine the potential for further range expansion. The central hypothesis is that, at a large spatial scale, changes in prairie management are more important than physiological climate tolerance for promoting range expansion, while at smaller scales, biotic factors such as avian dispersal, competition and facilitation are more important. The spatial scale of variation will be determined using microsatellites in historical, encroaching and niche expanding populations. The effects of fire will be examined using long-term data from the Konza Prairie NSF-LTER, while manipulative and field experiments will determine how the interaction of frost and drought impact Red Cedar performance. Seed dispersal by birds and changes in bird migration over time will be examined to determine how far, and where, birds disseminate Red Cedar. Empirical data will be integrated into a spatially explicit population-level age/stage matrix model, based on inputs from structural equation modeling at all three spatial scales, with spatial resolution determined by the results of microsatellite studies.
