Department Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS) Responsibilities The Marine Data Center (MDC; ************************** specializes in managing surface marine meteorological and physical oceanographic observations measured in-situ by research ships and remotely by space-based satellites. Located in the Center for Ocean-Atmospheric Prediction Studies (COAPS; *************************** at the Florida State University (FSU), the MDC provides operational data management services for over 30 research vessels recruited to the Shipboard Automated Meteorological and Oceanographic System initiative. The center also curates user-friendly satellite data, particularly for ocean vector winds, and global air-sea flux products. The MDC director coordinates all activities of the center both within COAPS and FSU, across the center's funding agencies and partners, and within the U.S. and international marine climate and geoinformatics communities. The MDC director is responsible for all contracts and grants that support the center, managing all MDC employees, and mentoring MDC students. DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW Dr. Richard M. Myers is a Faculty Investigator and Chief Scientific Officer of the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology. His laboratory uses genomic, genetic, molecular biology, and cell biology approaches to study problems in human neurobiology and gene regulation on a genome-wide level. We especially seek to understand how germline and somatic DNA sequence variation, epigenetics, and the environment affect the levels of transcription of genes in cell-type specific manners in the human nervous system. We focus on normal, healthy brain function as well as diseases, including Huntington disease, Alzheimer disease, Parkinson disease, psychiatric disorders, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, often in the context of differential responses to therapeutic agents. In addition, we work on neuropsychiatric disorders, and with Dr. Greg Cooper's lab at HudsonAlpha, on understanding the causes and mechanisms of unexplained diseases in children. Our experimental and computational work include genome-scale analysis of cis-acting regulatory sequences, DNA binding proteins and epigenetic action involved in human gene regulation and disease, as well as the development of molecular biomarkers for early detection and monitoring of diseases relevant to neuroscience. While not required, subject area familiarity and/or interest in genetics, genomics, neuroscience, neuropsychiatric diseases, and/or neurodegenerative diseases is desirable. Project areas include study of gene regulation for genes implicated in normal human biology as well as disease, novel analysis approaches for associating genetic variation with gene expression, and genome-wide approaches relevant to disease as well as genome function in the brain more broadly. POSITION SUMMARY This Research Associate (RA) position is in the Myers Lab supporting genomics research projects in a variety of basic and applied areas, including global genomic assays and functional characterization. Job Responsibilities: Participates in method development and technical innovation within the research team and supports project timelines Performs method optimizations, validations and participates in technology transfer to production Performs routine operation, maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments such as pH, conductivity meters, osmometers, spectrnphotometers, hematology analyzers and nucroscopes Evaluates and selects methods, applies protocols and scientific techniques to accomplish study objectives Drafts and updates protocols, test methods and standard operating procedures as applicable Proactively collaborates and supports the team, communicates problems as they arise Provides solution/s to problem/ s of limited complexity, exercises judgment within defined policies to determine appropriate action Collects, analyzes and compiles data. Summarizes for interpretation and discussion Drafts statistical and narrative reports as applicable Recognizes and reports experimental variances Is able to coordinate a small project or a small component of a larger project according to set deliverables Maintains good laboratory records and documentation for experimental work and results Maintains workplace safety and environmental practices Maintains clean workplace including laboratory bench and glassware Supports the department with QC technical investigation activities as needed Works in the spirit of continuous improvement Engages in inter and intra-departmental activities/studies Performs other related duties as required or as directed. Ability to design small studies, gather, organize and analyze statistical data and generate reports Excellent oral and written communication skills Ability to investigate and analyze information and to draw conclusions Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications such as Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Teams Knowledge of current technological developments/trends in area of expertise is desirable but not required Capable of adjusting to dynamic work environment and changing priorities Willing to take on new challenges and implement new ideas Must be Comfortable handling blood products Willing to embrace a learning environment, is open to suggestions, new ideas and innovation Ability to grasp methods fast and willingness to change course as applicable Familiar with GLP, GMP practices and capable of working in a regulated medical device company (ISO and FDA) Must have strong analytical skills Must be a team player and driven individual Must value innovation, accuracy and accountability Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree with 2-5 years or Associates degree with 5-8 years' experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
