Researchers in the Wissel Lab work on several experiments deployed around the world including in Antarctica, Greenland, and high elevation mountains. Experiments such as the Askaryan Radio Array (ARA) and the future radio component of IceCube-Gen2 at the South Pole and the Radio Neutrino Observatory in Greenland (RNO-G) search for EeV-scale neutrinos with antennas deployed in polar ice. Balloon-borne experiments like the Payload for Ultra-high-Energy Observations (PUEO) search for neutrino interactions in the ice and upgoing tau neutrinos from a high altitude. Researchers in the Wissel lab are also exploring novel concepts like the Beamforming Elevated Array for Cosmic Neutrinos which searches for upgoing tau neutrinos from a high-elevation mountain. Previous experience in these experiments or related experiments is advantageous, but not required. The postdoctoral scholar will conduct research on PUEO, which is expected to launch from McMurdo in 2024. For PUEO, the Penn State group is responsible for a deployable array of antenna and calibration systems. The payload will be integrated in Chicago and in Palestine, Tx prior to launch and the postdoc will be expected to contribute to building and testing instrumentation on the PUEO instrument. They will also travel to contribute to integration activities and may conduct field work in Antarctica. As a member of the PUEO team, they will contribute to searches for the highest energy neutrinos in the flight data. JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS: The Biomolecular and Biomimetic Materials Laboratory in the Biomedical Engineering Department is seeking to hire two Postdoctoral Scholars to conduct independent research under the direction of Dr. Yong Wang. Working in a collaborative multidisciplinary team, the postdoctoral candidate will conduct extensive research to develop biomimetic extracellular matrices and cell walls using aptamers and hydrogels for protein and cell delivery. Responsibilities of the position include developing novel aptamer-based biomaterials or drug delivery systems for regenerative medicine, cancer immunotherapy, genome editing, and cell regulation. Education and Experience: The position requires a doctoral (Ph.D.) degree in Biomedical Engineering or related discipline by the time of appointment. Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in biomaterials, cell biology and genome editing. Appointment duration is for one year, renewal possible depending on the performance of the candidate and availability of funds. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Prof. Greg Pavlak are seeking a self-motivated, highly skilled Postdoctoral Scholar to work on funded research in the area of building indoor air quality (IAQ) and heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) system controls. The successful candidate will join the Indoor Environment Collaborative and Sustainable Building Decisions Lab at Penn State Architectural Engineering, and will work closely with the PIs, team members, and industry to develop and evaluate new HVAC system designs and control strategies to mitigate occupant harm from exposure to indoor bioaerosols. Key Responsibilities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: * Developing and analyzing new HVAC control algorithms to balance energy efficiency and IAQ. * Designing and conducting energy, IAQ, and economic simulations of novel control systems. * Aggregating, synthesizing, and interpreting HVAC system data from field sites. * Developing data-driven models for benchmarking key performance indicators (KPIs). * Staying up to date with the latest advancements, research, and standards in IAQ, building controls, and healthy buildings. * Presenting results, publishing in peer-reviewed technical journals, and collaborating on new funding proposals. Required and Preferred Qualifications * A Ph.D. in mechanical engineering, architectural engineering, or closely related field is required by the start date. * Research experience in indoor air quality, building HVAC controls, and/or closely related fields is required, with relevant industry experience also being highly desirable. * Familiarity with a variety of HVAC system types and current ventilation/IAQ standards is required. * Proficiency in computer simulation of building energy and/or indoor air quality is strongly preferred. (e.g., EnergyPlus, Modelica, CONTAM, CFD, etc.) * Prior work or research experience related to building automation systems and sequences of operations is highly desirable. * Proficiency in scientific programming, data analysis, and/or machine learning (e.g., Python, Scikit-learn, PyTorch, etc.) is also desired. * A track record of publishing in peer-reviewed journals on related topics is also strongly preferred.
