Job Title: Research Scientist
Reporting: Director of Innovation
Ascent Industries Co. is seeking a Research Scientist to join our Research and Development team. This role will serve as the technical focal point for new custom and contract manufacturing projects and drive successful execution from proof of concept through commercial-scale production. This role will collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders in R&D, Sales, Marketing, Engineering, and Manufacturing to drive commercial success with a focus on speed to solution, commercial-scale viability, deep technical rigor, and a proactive safety mindset.
The ideal candidate combines strong technical skills in experiment design, synthesis, process chemistry, commercial-scale unit operations, and scale up within the chemicals or materials industry. This role is expected to serve as the subject matter expert for all analytical testing related to the contract manufacturing projects, implementing customer specified tests and introducing new test methods that are critical for ensuring product quality.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as the technical focal point for new contract manufacturing opportunities.
Identify fastest and most efficient route to commercially viable solutions for new contract manufacturing and custom synthesis opportunities based on a deep understanding of process chemistry and plant unit operations.
Establish R&D lab capabilities for synthesis, process development, sample preparation, and testing by evaluating current capabilities and additional needs to support project pipeline.
Design experiments based on sound scientific principles and statistical methods to validate technical packages for proof of concept, optimize processes, and develop technical package for manufacturing to support First Time in Spec production.
Rapidly produce samples for customer evaluation based on a thorough understanding of plant equipment capabilities and technical requirements
Demonstrate expertise in a broad array of analytical instruments and drive new method development to align internal test methods and capabilities with customer methods and protocols. Leverage external labs for specialized test capabilities.
Collaborate with key stakeholders in Sales, Engineering, Manufacturing, Procurement, and Product stewardship to drive successful commercialization.
Engage with customers to gather process details, develop experimental plans, communicate project progress, present key findings, results, and support successful qualifications.
Create Standard Operating Procedures and Work Instructions for core lab activities. Assure safe lab operations and compliance with site regulations while ensuring zero recordables.
Skills, Qualifications, Experience, Special Physical Requirements:
Bachelor's degree (advanced degree preferred) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science and Engineering
Proven hands-on industrial scale-up and technical transfer experience (5+ years) in fine or specialty chemicals or materials industry with subject matter expertise in one or more product categories: Adhesives, Coatings, Surfactants, Dispersions, Specialty Additives, and Reactive Blends. Know-how of product requirements for one or more market segments: CASE, Oil and Gas Chemicals, Plastics/Engineered Polymers, Water Treatment Chemicals, Lubricants, and Personal Care.
Strong lab scale synthesis skills, working knowledge of commercial-scale process equipment, and prior experience scaling a product from the laboratory scale through robust commercial scale production. Solid understanding of interplay between raw materials, formulations, manufacturing process variables, product specifications, and product performance.
Prior experience with development of detailed technical packages for scale up.
In depth analytical and method development experience with techniques such as GPC, GC, HPLC, FTIR, NMR, Rheology, Particle Size, and wet chemistry.
Design of Experiments and Six Sigma Green Belt Experience Preferred.
Ability to prioritize tasks, manage multiple projects simultaneously, and meet tight deadlines.
Strong communication skills both written and verbal.

Utilize data provided by VA's Office of Mental Health (OMH) and Office of Suicide Prevention (OSP) to answer program evaluation and assessment questions, including but not limited to:
Veterans Outcome Assessment (VOA):Annual assessments on symptoms, functioning, well-being, and experience of care from veterans starting a new mental health outpatient program, reassessed after three months.
Satisfaction Surveys:Data from veterans on their satisfaction with VA and non-VA mental health care and experiences of care.
Clinical Templates:Data from national templates such as evidence-based psychotherapies, records of suicide and overdose events, intensity levels for community-based care, and services provided during treatment.
Performance Measures:Facility-level data from Strategic Analytics for Improvement and Learning measures and other measures within the Mental Health Information System, a collection of over 100 measures characterizing mental health treatment in the VA.
NEPEC Data:Data collected by the Northeastern Program Evaluation Center or other VA program evaluation centers for program monitoring and evaluation purposes.
Examine and analyze data across differences in target conditions, care intensity, medical and mental health comorbidities, demographics, and sex differences.
Identify and address gaps in data quality and integrity, cleanse and manipulate data as necessary to ensure valid, reliable analysis.
Review and validate analytical data sets to ensure they meet statistical validity and quality standards.
Communicate any identified data inaccuracies or deficiencies to the VA and assist in determining additional data collection needs to address gaps.
Program Evaluation:
Independently evaluate mental health care and suicide prevention programs to measure effectiveness in achieving outcomes.
Perform comparative analyses using internal (intra-Veteran) and external (inter-Veteran) data.
Conduct sub-group analyses to determine relative effectiveness for specific veteran cohorts and identify service gaps.
Develop predictive models to forecast program outcomes and identify key factors influencing success.
Methodology Development:
Develop evaluation plans incorporating human-centered design principles to understand user needs.
Employ the CDC's Program Evaluation Framework and propose innovative statistical methods as necessary.
Reassess business rules, cost estimates, and outcome measures for program evaluations.
Reporting:
Prepare annual evaluation reports, Congressionally Mandated Reports (CMR), and other supporting materials for the Clay Hunt Act and Staff Sergent Parker Gordon Fox Suicide Prevention Grants Program (SSG Fox SPGP).
Propose best practices for mental health care and suicide prevention and document key barriers and facilitators to implementation.
Ensure timely submission of deliverables with accurate and comprehensive analysis.
Create advanced visualizations and dashboards using tools like Tableau, Power BI, or custom scripts to communicate complex data effectively.
Stakeholder Engagement:
Coordinate with VA program leads, stakeholders, and external partners for data acquisition, methodology vetting, and program insights.
Conduct interviews and transition meetings as part of the discovery phase.
Data Analyst Oversight:
Supervise and provide direction to 1-2 Data Analysts, ensuring that analysis activities align with project requirements and objectives.
Guide Data Analysts on appropriate methodologies to use for various analyses.
Review and validate the work of Data Analysts to ensure accuracy and integrity.
Provide mentorship and technical guidance to Data Analysts, fostering their professional growth and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Master's degree in Political Science, Quantitative Methods, Public Policy, Psychology, or a related field.
At least 5 years of experience in applied data science, program evaluation, and analytics.
Proven track record in leading data science projects, especially in the federal space.

Education

As part of a campus-wide cluster hire on invasive species, the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation in the College of Natural Resources and the Environment at Virginia Tech seeks applicants for a 9-month, tenure-track, research (60%), teaching (30%), and service (10%) position at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank. The successful candidate will study fish or wildlife populations using cutting-edge genetic/genomic tools to improve detection, identification, rapid response, management, and/or eradication of invasive species. Possible areas of research could include the use of environmental DNA, metabarcoding, genomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, gene editing, or related approaches for studying invasive species that affect fish or wildlife populations.
The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their area of expertise in the department. Advising and mentoring both graduate and undergraduate students is required. Participation in departmental, college, and university affairs and collaboration with faculty both within the department and across the university is expected.
The successful candidate will also be affiliated with Virginia Tech's Invasive Species Collaborative (ISC). The ISC is a university-wide initiative with its academic home within the Global Change Center (GCC) at Virginia Tech, a campus-wide center within the Fralin Life Sciences Institute. The ISC seeks to foster growth in transdisciplinary research to develop solutions to the complex global problem of invasive species, which impacts the lives of all people, costing the global economy more than $423 billion annually. This position is part of a cluster hire funded by the Provost's office that includes seven faculty positions related to invasive species in environmental law and public policy, science and technology, predictive modeling, and research and extension. The successful candidate is expected to leverage the expertise of the Department, the ISC, the broader GCC, and other vibrant, collaborative research communities at Virginia Tech to engage in team science with associated faculty.
Researchers who can collaborate with a range of scientists and stakeholders, and who can secure funding from national and international funding sources, are encouraged to apply. Preference will be given to collaborative individuals employing cutting-edge research methods and who have a demonstrated ability to effectively disseminate research results through diverse outlets across the scientific-public spectrum. The individual will also be expected to contribute to the development of proposals to secure significant extramural funding to support a center of excellence at Virginia Tech focusing on invasive species science, technology, management, outreach, and policy.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT AND COLLEGE
Established in 1972, the Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation's vision is to significantly contribute to fish and wildlife resource conservation and management at state, national, and international levels through integrated programs in research, teaching, and engagement. The Department currently comprises 22 teaching, research, and extension faculty, 6 technical support and research staff, and approximately 75 graduate and 300 undergraduate students. The department is also home to 8 federal scientists, including the USGS Virginia Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit and representatives from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the U.S. Forest Service. Approximately 35 postdoctoral associates and research scientists are supported by department faculty. The department's educational, research and outreach missions are supported by research laboratories in at least 6 buildings on campus with most faculty offices housed in portions of the adjacently located Cheatham, Latham, and Steger Halls. Field operations are conducted out of the Wild Animal Research Facilities which includes the Research Aviary, the Freshwater Mussel Conservation Laboratory, and the Conservation Aquaculture Laboratory.
The Department of Fish and Wildlife Conservation is well known for encompassing diverse disciplines and promoting interdisciplinary collaborations including but not limited to areas such as ecosystem ecology, behavioral ecology, population dynamics, physiology, ecotoxicology, disease ecology, human-wildlife conflicts, human dimensions of natural resource conservation, marine ecology and fisheries, natural resource policy, and fish and wildlife habitat management.
The Department offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Fish and Wildlife Conservation and a minor in Biodiversity Conservation. The Department also offers Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Fisheries and Wildlife Sciences. Graduate students study a diverse range of subjects reflecting the broad expertise and interest of the faculty and participate widely in interdisciplinary programs across campus and beyond.
Required Qualifications
● Ph.D. in biology, ecology, fish and wildlife conservation/management, conservation science, genetics, genomics, or related field.
● Demonstrated effectiveness in verbal and written communication to include an outstanding peer-reviewed publication record in accordance with career stage.
● Demonstrated experience using genetic or genomic tools for detecting, monitoring, studying, and/or managing invasive species of any taxonomic group that affect fish or wildlife.
● Demonstrated experience with collaborations or team science, including other academic disciplines, state or federal agencies, NGOs, and/or private industry.
● Demonstrated commitment to principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in teaching and research.
Preferred Qualifications
● Demonstrated ability and interest in developing and teaching courses in genetics and/or genomics, invasive species management, or closely related areas.
● Evidence of ability to work in interdisciplinary teams with the goal of producing scientific evidence that can translate to real-world applications or solutions.
● Demonstrated teaching effectiveness.
