Research internship job in Chicago, IL
The Cook County Treasurer's Office is seeking a researcher who is a rigorous, critical and creative thinker to join the office's research department. The department, established in early 2021, produces analyses and in-depth studies of Illinois' property tax system. It is led by a former Chicago Tribune investigative reporter. The department has published several studies that exposed entrenched inequities that have prevented Black and Latino communities from building generational wealth. Two of the studies led to the enactment of Illinois' biggest property tax reform bill in decades.
Some of the office's recent work includes:
An analysis on how few Cook County voters take part in binding referendums that let voters decide whether to increase taxes
An analysis on how the county's property tax appeal system works to the disadvantage of lower-income minority homeowners
Annual analyses on tax bill changes across the county
Annual analyses of property tax collection rates
Further studies will expand on all of that work and explore other aspects of the Illinois property tax system, with the aim of developing further proposals to make the system more affordable, fair and equitable.
The researcher will help formulate future studies and conduct primary and secondary research, which often involves exhaustive research on property tax policies, initiatives and theory, as well as gathering, cleaning and analyzing data. The researcher also will help prepare the studies for publication.

Intern description
The CRT research team is offering part-time unpaid research internships to qualified undergraduates in the Chicago area. Most of the work is remote; however, interns are expected to come into the office at least once a week in order to help with tasks on site.
The Summer cohort typically starts mid-May and goes through mid-August, although scheduling can be flexible.
Interns will be involved in multiple ongoing projects, such as:
ongoing evaluation of the Trauma Treatment Program
evaluation of a grant program providing training in Youth Mental Health First Aid
the development of a database about children 0 to 18 who have participated in psychological evaluations at CRT
evaluation of the Youth MIND program, which provides trauma-informed screening, assessment, and therapy to youth and families in the Chicago area
evaluation of a gun violence prevention program being implemented in schools around the city
Interns will be actively involved in most aspects of the research process including searching for relevant literature, putting together research materials, interviewing families, inputting and cleaning data in Excel and IBM SPSS, and helping with data management and analysis. This internship does not provide any clinical experience, i.e., direct contact with children, but is geared for students who would like to learn more about the research/program evaluation work at a non-profit organization. Students will receive the necessary training to do these tasks on these projects and will receive supervision from research team members led by a licensed clinical psychologist. Interns are expected to work at least 6 hours per week, but more hours can be accommodated. Internships can be set up for one, two, or more semesters.
Qualified Applicants will be undergraduate students who have:
Completed at least one introductory course in psychology, behavioral science, child development, or social work with a grade of B or above, or enrolled in a pre-medical course of study,

We are seeking a highly motivated research technician to work on projects related to genetic molecular diagnostics, cancer predisposition, and discovery of biomarkers (genetic and metabolic) in pediatric brain tumors. The candidate will be responsible for performing experiments and collection and analysis of data by performing optical genome mapping in the laboratory, and help with maintenance of a genetic-modified mouse colony including breeding, genotyping, and collection of appropriate samples and data for experiments. Additionally, the candidate will participate in the management and operation of the lab.
Successful candidate should have demonstrated experience in laboratory methods: agarose gel electrophoresis, PCR analysis, DNA purification, and western blotting. The position also requires experience in Excel/R for data analysis and presentation. Experience in handling mice is a necessity. Experience in mouse gavage/drug treatment and brain/nerve dissection is preferred but not required. Experience in bioinformatics is also preferred but not required.
