Job Description
WEST is seeking a candidate for a paid internship in ecological data science. This internship program is co-funded by the University of Wyoming EPSCoR Program and Western EcoSystems Technology (WEST), Inc. The goal is to increase the intern's competitiveness for computational and data science careers in academic, government, and/or commercial settings. The internship can begin this winter and may extend into the spring depending on the project and intern availability.
This internship is a part of WY-ACT:
Anticipating the Climate-Water Transition and Cascading Challenges to Socio-Environmental Systems in America's Headwaters
. There are multiple possible intern projects as WEST works with a variety of partners within the state of Wyoming on topics that relate to climate and water systems. Project selection will be determined by considering the intern's strengths and goals along with partner needs. The intern will be supervised and mentored by a WEST data scientist, with the opportunity to interact with and work with multiple additional staff members from WEST and our partners.
Interns will be employees of WEST. The number of hours worked per week can be flexible. Each internship is 200 to 300 hours.
This is a general description of the functions for this position and is not inclusive of all the duties whichmay be associated with this position.

Because this position is funded in-part by a grant through the University of Wyoming, priority will be given to applicants that are current students or recent graduates (within the past 3 years) of the University of Wyoming or a Wyoming community college. Interns will be paid $1200/month gross for four months for a total stipend of $4800.00 Casper Mountain Science Program (CMSP) instructors lead small groups of Natrona County School District students visiting our multi-acre outdoor campus on Casper Mountain (approx. 8000 ft. elevation). Our four-instructor team lives on-site and works to inspire young people to learn in the outdoors while developing an appreciation for science. CMSP offers single-day and multi-day (overnight) programs to K-12 students. Students visiting are typically between 4th and 8th grade, and instructors teach lessons designed by our staff to meet the Wyoming State Science Standards and to develop students' connection to the natural world. While some activities with students are completed indoors, a significant portion of the teaching is outside on our forested campus. When in the outdoor environment, interns may be exposed to inclement weather, uneven terrain, and potentially dangerous plants and wildlife, so extra safety precautions and an awareness of the surroundings are required.
Instruction of students on campus is performed Monday through Thursday, with in-school instruction, and additional training is done on Fridays. The hours per day vary depending on the type of program we are providing. Instructors rotate chaperoning duties when students stay overnight, including staying with groups of students in yurts. Small "homework" assignments, readings, and other side projects are regularly assigned.
Weekends provide opportunities to explore the outdoor recreation on Casper Mountain and around the state of Wyoming. Housing is provided for instructors on our campus, located within ten minutes of numerous mountain biking, trail-running, hiking trailheads, Nordic ski trails, a downhill ski area, and several county parks. Salary and Benefits:

JOB TITLE:
Research Associate I
JOB PURPOSE:
Conduct investigative research requiring the application and analysis of standard tests and procedures as defined by the project.
Independently and collaboratively conduct laboratory experiments, primarily in the C. elegans system, to publish papers and complete NIH-funded projects designed to understand the organismal, cellular, molecular, and genetic control of animal development and underlying cellular and biochemical processes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform standard designated procedures associated with experiments/projects; interpret and analyze results; multi-task experimentally as necessary, and present data in organized form.
Review up-to-date scientific literature extracting information relevant to ongoing, proposed, or possible research projects.
Learn, develop and utilize new techniques that facilitate research goals by consulting literature or other University personnel including faculty, students and research assistants.
Provide written and oral progress reports to supervisor and research group
Carry out genetic manipulation in the
C. elegans
model system including conducting genetic crosses, transgenics requiring microinjections, and CRISPR/Cas9 methods
Conduct phenotypic analyses of
C. elegans
at the organismal, cell biological, and molecular levels including the use of quantitative confocal microscopy, DNA recombinant engineering, biochemical methods including western blotting, protein purification, and protein interaction studies.
Write and organize manuscripts including the generation of professional figures in cooperation with the P.I.
Once proficient, the successful candidate may be responsible for working with and training other laboratory personnel, as needed

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor's degree in a field related to research project
Experience: 1 year of research experience working in an academic laboratory designing, carrying out, and interpreting experiments using molecular, genetic, and cell biological approaches.

In depth understanding of concepts in molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry and cell biology.
Interpret and analyze complex data including statistical and computational methods

Job Description
WEST is seeking a candidate for a paid internship in ecological data science. This internship program is co-funded by the University of Wyoming EPSCoR Program and Western EcoSystems Technology (WEST), Inc. The goal is to increase the intern's competitiveness for computational and data science careers in academic, government, and/or commercial settings. The internship can begin this winter and may extend into the spring depending on the project and intern availability.
This internship is a part of WY-ACT:
Anticipating the Climate-Water Transition and Cascading Challenges to Socio-Environmental Systems in America's Headwaters
. There are multiple possible intern projects as WEST works with a variety of partners within the state of Wyoming on topics that relate to climate and water systems. Project selection will be determined by considering the intern's strengths and goals along with partner needs. The intern will be supervised and mentored by a WEST data scientist, with the opportunity to interact with and work with multiple additional staff members from WEST and our partners.
Interns will be employees of WEST. The number of hours worked per week can be flexible. Each internship is 200 to 300 hours.
