Business Unit: Bar Product Metallurgy We oversee product quality throughout the mill. We are problem solvers and are relied on to make multiple decisions on product issues throughout the day.
Ongoing Projects
The team dispositions material placed on hold for technical and production issues related to order requirements.
The team interacts with multiple groups including Customer Service, Production and Quality daily.
The team reviews customer specifications for ability to reliably meet customer requirements on orders.
The team works closely with R&D on new product development and product characterization work.
The team monitors Cost of Poor Quality through test results and material deviations.
The ongoing project work is driven through CPQ reduction efforts.
Your Role as an Intern
You will be a part of a dynamic team, supporting the following tasks:
Support Metallurgy though project work based on CPQ issues in bar and wire production. Examples of project work include work with sizing operations on reasons for Undersize issues in bar and work with Bar Straighteners on Out of Straight issues with high temperature / high strength bars.
Intern should be willing to spend a majority of their time on the floor with production - and should feel comfortable working with multiple people including Metallurgy group, Production Engineers and operators.

What Do We Require?
You must be:
Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program majoring in Material Science or equivalent
Minimum 3.0 GPA
Candidates should possess basic excel skills
Willing and able to work on-site at our Reading, PA location.
Applicants MUST be US Citizens or Green Card Holders due to Carpenter's government contracts.
Pay Range
Hourly rates are based on: 1 - Program of study; 2 - Degree type (i.e., Bachelor's); 3 - Progression in degree (i.e., 1st year, 2nd year, etc.). The range for this position is $21.00 - $25.00 per hour.
Commuting/Housing Assistance (If Eligible)
Interns who must commute to work from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $2,400 (less applicable taxes) as excessive commute allowance. Interns who choose to temporarily relocate from outside the immediate Reading, PA area (moving over 50 miles one-way), will be paid a one-time lump sum payment of $4,800 (less applicable taxes) as a housing allowance. If applicable, this payment would be made during the first payroll cycle, which would be three or four weeks following the internship start date.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The Sartorius Cell Culture Facility (SCCF) is a multi-user (cost-recovery) shared resource administered by the Huck Institutes and housed in the Chandlee Laboratory. It provides services to multiple University research groups, as well as external groups through ARSO agreements.
Responsibilities: Following are the key responsibilities of this position:
* Provide upstream (mammalian cell culture, etc.) and downstream (separation and purification) services to the research community. They will be expected to initiate cultures, scale up growth, cryopreserve cells/tissue, harvest bioreactors, separate, and purify products of the cell cultures and transfections.
* Daily maintenance of the laboratory, all necessary laboratory certifications, and ordering supplies. They will provide training to users on all equipment within the Facility and participate in regular workshops organized by the Center of Excellence in Industrial Biotechnology (CoEIB). The R will be expected to supervise junior research technologists and student workers within the Facility.
* Initiate, maintain, and expand cell cultures and prepare samples for flow cytometry assays. Perform quality control procedures and maintenance tasks for flow cytometers, data acquisition, basic troubleshooting of cell analyzers/flow cytometers in SCCF and Flow Cytometry Facility.
The successful candidate in conjunction with the Facility Director, will provide and oversee all services, and train the facility users. Together, they will be responsible for operating and maintaining of all of the equipment within the facility.
This is a term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent prospects of renewal.
Education and Experience: This position will be filled at the Intermediate Professional or the Advanced Professional level, based on the successful candidate's qualifications. The minimum qualifications are a Bachelor's degree and 1+ year of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Office software programs is required. Prior experience in daily operations and management of a research lab is highly favorable, as is a working knowledge of mammalian cell culture skills (basic cell culture, stem cell culture, transfection, cryopreservation, biomolecule purification, a demonstrated competence with sterile and aseptic techniques and supporting analytical techniques).
Good interpersonal and communication skills are required in order to assist the multidisciplinary faculty and trainees in optimizing experimental parameters and interpreting data.
