**What Does the Internship Program Offer?**
Pearson is offering an 8-week summer internship in 2026 for two exceptional doctoral students with strong psychometric skills who are eager to gain hands-on experience in large-scale educational assessment. Interns will engage in various aspects of operational K-12 assessments, including assessment development, item analysis, standard setting, and technical reporting. This opportunity also supports our LEAD goal, as interns frequently collaborate with our research scientists on co-publications and present their work at industry conferences.
**Pay rate**
The award includes a $9,000 stipend.

**Job Description**
As an Associate Research & Psychometric Analyst Intern, you will gain hands-on experience in large-scale educational assessment. Interns will work closely with Pearson research scientists to support operational K-12 assessment contracts, gaining applied experience in assessment development, item analysis, standard setting, and technical reporting. This internship also provides opportunities to collaborate on research, co-publish with experts, and present at industry conferences, enhancing both technical skills and professional communication in educational measurement
**What does the 8- weeks involve?**
During the 8-week program taking place between June and August 2026, with some flexibility in scheduling. Interns will gain hands-on experience in large-scale educational assessment, working closely with Pearson research scientists. Key activities include assessment development, item analysis, standard setting, and technical reporting. Interns will also have opportunities to enhance their collaboration and communication skills in educational measurement while contributing to real-world K-12 assessment projects.
This position is fully remote, with occasional travel to company offices or partner locations as necessary. The role is primarily designated as a Remote Employee. For reporting purposes, the office location will be US-TX-Austin-400 Center Ridge.
**Minimum Requirements**
+ Currently enrolled in a doctoral program in educational measurement, educational statistics, educational psychology, or a related field.
+ Completion of at least two years of doctoral-level coursework
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills.
+ Ability to commit exclusively to the Pearson summer internship (no concurrent internships or externships).

JOB SUMMARY:
The Postdoctoral Research Associate will serve as a lead support person to assist the PI, staff, and students in performing research in the Long-Term Agroecosystems Research (LTAR) at the College of Agriculture, Community, and the Sciences (CACS). The person would also support PI's research and education activities to enhance environmental, soil, water quality, microclimate monitoring, Geographic Information System (GIS), and remote sensing research programs as part of the PI's recently funded Evans Allen, NextGen, and other research and education grants. This position also assists in mentoring undergraduate and graduate research to enhance environmental science, GIS, and remote sensing programs. This position will be supported by Evans Allen and other grant funding for 3 years. Continued funding after that time is subject to funding availability and performance evaluation.
The post-doctoral research associate will be a key member of the Center of Geospatial Intelligence and Environmental Security research team and will be involved in ecological and agroecosystem change research, including such topics as microclimate, watershed management and modeling, sediment analysis, soil formation, water scarcity and security, geomorphology, land cover change, application of remote sensing and Geoscience in agricultural and environmental studies.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Assist the PI, implement Evans Allen, and externally funded research and education projects.
Assist the PI and other supporting staff in designing experiments and mentoring graduate thesis and capstone research.
Develop collaborative or independent research in applying geospatial technology in agriculture and the environment.
Manage research sites in the Appalachia region for periodic field data collection and summer camps of undergraduate and high school students.
Assist the PI in developing, mentoring, and conducting undergraduate research and experiential learning projects.
Lead in collecting and managing geospatial, vegetation, biomass, soil, water, and other field and secondary data to use for research and publication.
Develop and submit peer-reviewed manuscripts, give professional presentations, and engage in developing competitive grant proposals for external funding.
Assist the PI in managing the GIS lab, geospatial data, and implementing the data management plan of multiple research grants
Assist the PI's research team in procuring and utilizing cutting-edge research equipment.
Participate in college and school-level seminars, workshops, student recruitment fairs, high school visits, and meetings.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
Practical experience in research methodology in agroecosystem, soil, biomass, and watershed studies.
Experience measuring water quality dynamics and training students on the topic.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team with excellent written and oral communication skills.
Commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population.
Specialized or moderate skills in spatial statistics, data analytics, pixel and object-based image analysis and feature extraction, SWAT, Google Earth Engine, ERDAS IMAGINE, ENVI, R, and/or Python.
Analytical ability to include geospatial mapping and data analytics skills using ArcGIS Pro.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, along with problem-solving expertise
Must be able to manage multiple projects and set priorities.
Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals and developing competitive grants.
Possess the ability to perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
May assist in the supervision of students and staff as requested.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Overnight travel to research sites for field samplings that may require multiple days.
Handling and caring for heavy equipment, UAV drones, soil and water probes, and multispectral and Lidar cameras.
Occasionally, it requires heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling of objects over 50 pounds.
The work environment involves some exposure to inclement weather, hot or cold conditions, hazards, or physical risks, which require some basic safety precautions.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of a Ph.D. in Geography, Natural Resources, or related field and concentration on GIS, Remote Sensing, digital agriculture, or a closely related field.

Licensing and Certifications:
None are , but UAV-Drone Pilot and GISP are encouraged.

PNNL's Physical Detection Systems and Deployment Division is focused on discovering, developing and deploying physical detection systems. We are seeking post bachelor research associate candidates for assignments within the National Security Internship Program (NSIP).

**Advanced Engineered Systems**
We are a group of passionate makers who have a long history of building and deploying embedded sensor systems for a wide variety of sponsors and applications. We are 50+ electronics engineers, software engineers, mechanical engineers, physicists, etc.; all sharing the DNA and desire to deploy solutions for our sponsors that help the mission of national security. We focus on emerging technologies by integrating capability across electromagnetics, systems modeling, communications, analytics development, and systems design to serve as a flywheel for feeding technology advancements across the division and laboratory. Projects within the group range from mission focused, highly applied projects in support of national security to fundamental science projects.
**Detection Physics**
We represent PNNL's ultra-low background capability and develop some of the world's most sensitive radiation detection systems; driving solutions that span fundamental physics to treaty verification by integrating modeling, experimentation, data science, and support staff.
**Disruptive Technology**
We focus on the development of detection systems and data analysis techniques for a variety of missions ranging from fundamental physics to national security. Projects within the research group range from highly applied projects to fundamental science projects in the areas of nuclear/particle physics, electromagnetics, and novel sensor technology development.
**Engineered Materials**
We work on the design, synthesis, implementation, characterization, and monitoring of functional materials for national security missions leveraging chemistry, computations and models, data science, characterization tools, and non-destructive evaluation methods.
**Operational Readiness**
We steward capabilities associated with the mission assurance and operations and maintenance stage of the systems engineering lifecycle. Operational sustainment is achieved and transitioned through instructional systems, credibility assessment, logistics innovation, reliability and field engineering, and complex supply chain and interdependency analysis.
**Systems and Technology Integration**
We lead the Lab in bringing the most technology aligned, diverse, talented, and skilled project management and systems engineering staff who will do what it takes to expertly deliver on the national security detection requirements of our sponsors.
