About this Opportunity The candidate will join a growing team of bioinformaticians providing computational analysis and support at UW Medicine's South Lake Union campus. Reporting to the PI, the candidate will work with the Seshadri Lab group and will facilitate analysis of high-throughput and high-dimensional datasets generated in the context of an immunology laboratory. The lab focuses on understanding the human immune response to infectious pathogens, such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis, which is the leading infectious cause of death worldwide. The position includes ownership of projects, support of other researchers, and collaboration on community code. Job Description Dr. Brittney Muir's lab within the department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking a Research Scientist/Engineer 2 who will have the opportunity to develop new and improved orthotics and assistive devices that have the potential to normalize walking in people with disease, trauma, or age-related weakness. Dr Muir's lab integrates engineering design, biomechanics, and human subject research to advance the understanding of gait and mobility while translating these findings into practical clinical solutions. Ongoing projects include the design, testing, and evaluation of novel hardware and software systems aimed at normalizing walking and enhancing independence across diverse patient populations. This work is supported by research grants/awards from the Department of Veterans Affairs. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES * Collect experimental data using the following types of equipment: (20%) * motion analysis camera system, * instrumented treadmill, * electromyography system, * force plate, * pressure platform, * load cell systems, * robotic gait simulator, * mechanical testing system, * shear force testing device, * digital multimeter, * voltage and current sensing, * cardiopulmonary testing device. * Create custom software applications to support study aims using MATLAB, C++, Python, CUDA, ROS, JAVA, MS .net, Arduino, or other languages as needed. (20%) * Support IRB and R&D applications. (15%) * Support grant and manuscript preparation. (15%) * Perform data analysis and interpretation with the following software packages: MATLAB, Labview, Vicon Nexus, Visual 3D, Arduino, and MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint. (10%) * Identify key scientific questions that warrant investigation. (5%) * Design experiments and protocols to answer key scientific questions. (5%) Minimum Requirements * Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and two years of relevant experience in biomechanics research. Additional Requirements * Experience in Biomechanics research. * Experience with the scientific method. * Experience with human subjects gait lab data collection procedures. * Experience designing and fabricating custom orthotics and assistive devices. * Experience with the following software applications: MATLAB, Python, R, Aruino, OpenSim, and Vicon Nexus. * Knowledgeable about how to operate the following types of equipment, i) motion analysis camera system, ii) instrumented treadmill, iii) electromyography system, iv) force plate, v) load cell systems, vi) digital multimeter, vii) voltage and current sensing. * Expert with the following MS Office suite including Word, Excel and Power Point. * Able to prepare and present scientific results. * Knowledgeable and experience with 3D printing, mechanical testing, orthosis and assistive device design. * Knowledgeable and experience with gait patterns and compensations. * Knowledgeable and experience with biomechanics, especially lower limb biomechanics and gait analysis.
