Job Description
Affinius Capital is seeking a full-time Summer Intern to assist with creating innovative approaches that are enabled by technology to redesign and automate business processes in research, property analysis, and financial modeling/reporting. Interns will have the opportunity to work in our Innovation Center with Global Research's Data Science group. Interns will have the opportunity to build scalable data engineering pipelines, machine learning solutions, and data visualization dashboards, aiming to improve the overall data analytics and business decision-making processes. The established software development and project management skills can also be applied on the projects. Position Description
The Monarch Research and Education Internship offers hands-on experience in monarch monitoring, habitat assessments, conservation, and community outreach. Interns conduct field research using standardized protocols and work directly with biologists and Natural Resource Managers on military lands.
This is a field-focused position. Interns typically spend four days each week outdoors and one day completing data entry, writing, and administrative tasks. Fieldwork involves documenting milkweed presence, identifying blooming plants, and recording monarch eggs, larvae, and adults. Interns also support outreach activities designed to inspire interest in monarchs, pollinators, and migration among military families and school-aged children. All interns write biweekly blogs and attend virtual team meetings and webinars.
Interns who continue into the fall season assist with capturing, tagging, and measuring monarchs during migration.
Key Responsibilities
Field Research
Conduct monarch and habitat surveys during peak breeding periods
Collect data on milkweed, nectar plants, and monarch life stages
Navigate and work safely on military installations
Communication & Team Engagement
Maintain regular communication with Natural Resource Managers and partner organizations
Submit consistent updates to the EFTA Monarch Program Manager
Participate in weekly team meetings, data reviews, and educational webinars
Write biweekly blogs that highlight fieldwork and personal experiences
Education & Community Engagement

Experience:
Knowledge of all aspects of refractive surgery and the pre-operative and post-operative management of refractive surgery patients.

Knowledge of the internal organization of patient records in order to search the record to extract medical information and data relevant to patient care.

Duties
Perform initial medical screening of patients including history, distance and near visual acuity with and without correction or pinhole, pupillary light reflex, and application tonometry; assist with all aspects of patient care.
Evaluate triage patients needing immediate attention.
Answer or refer patient questions and chaperone patient exams, as needed.
Establish a sterile field and assists with minor surgical procedures including PRK and LASIK and other refractive surgical procedures.
Perform ophthalmic studies including auto refraction, keratometry, tonometry, visual field testing, pachymetry, specular microscopy, ophthalmic photography, potential acuity, brightness acuity, and other studies.
Use and maintain an autorefractor, phoropter, auto and manual keratometer, tonopen, Humphrey and Goldman visual field machines, corneal topographer, A-scan machine, pachymeter, specular microscope, ophthalmic photography equipment, slit lamp, potential acuity meter, brightness acuity test, color vision plates, stereo vision test, and personal computers.
Assist, educate, and train PRK staff, Ophthalmology Clinic residents, and other technicians in day-to-day clinic activities including organizing and maintaining exam room stocks.
Assist with clinical training activities to include laser certification wet labs, optometrist co-manager certification courses, and resident educational activities.
Perform Excimer laser responsibilities to include equipment and instrument inventory and upkeep.
Assist with clinical research protocols to include consenting subjects, assisting with completion of required study documentation, verification and auditing of study documents, data extraction, and handling of animals in research.
Be able to quickly learn new and unfamiliar technology, test equipment, and procedures being trialed for the Warfighter Refractive Surgery Program.
Assist in administrative/clinical duties such as filing and answering phones.

The Biocontainment Veterinary Research Technician in the ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 will provide general care, husbandry, and handling of the animals. May assist with select procedures in support of immunogenicity and efficacy studies. Assist with documentation of data and perform other duties as detailed in job description, or other duties as assigned.
The Role:
Ability to understand and practice all applicable Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's), training manuals, and Biosafety and Operation Manuals.
Must be willing and able to work in ABSL-2, BSL-3, and BSL-4 facilities while wearing applicable protective clothing such as; positive pressure suits, power air purifying respirators, and/or other appropriate personal protective equipment for prolonged periods of time.
Ability to obtain and maintain DoJ Security Risk Assessment (SRA) approval, and CDC Select Agent Program approval. This includes initial and periodic drug screenings.
Ability to withstand continuous standing and walking on hard floor surfaces.
Technician(s) work prolonged periods in auditory and physical isolation while inside containment laboratory.
Handling and restraint of multiple laboratory animal species used in biomedical research.
Assist with project support procedures such as follows:
Health monitoring/assessment of animals.
Appropriate sample collection/processing on multiple species used in biomedical research.
Performing blood analysis using various benchtop equipment.
Provide and/or prepare medications and/or treatments as needed
Prepare animals for pathological evaluation, performs euthanasia, and verifies death.
Provide support to pathologist during necropsy or tissue collection.

General maintenance and troubleshooting of all equipment used for project support.
Cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization of lab equipment.

Assist with in vitro work and equipment to include:

Proper use of centrifuge
Ability to operate autoclave and verify sterility
Accurate written and computerized record keeping of all husbandry and procedures performed.
Performs quality review of laboratory records for completeness and accuracy
Our Ideal Candidate:
Required: High school diploma or general equivalency diploma. Two or more years of job specific experience or in some circumstances advanced degrees/certifications may be considered in lieu of experience.
Preferred: AALAS (ALAT, LAT, or LATg) certification. Sixty (60) hours from accredited college or university or an Associate's Degree or graduate of AVMA accredited veterinary technician program or Military Occupational School (MOS 68T - Animal Care Specialist). Previous biomedical research experience working with Non-Human Primates (NHP's) or other laboratory animals.
Must have valid driver's license and meet Texas Biomed driving standards
OTHER:
This is a full-time hourly paid position. Texas Biomed business hours are 7am to 4pm, Monday through Friday. Ability to work variable work hours on frequent basis. This would include evenings/nights, weekends, holidays, and any other unforeseen circumstances.

Potential Hazards: This work will involve potential exposure to chemical hazards such as carcinogens (Formalin), toxic materials (Formalin).
