Purpose Statement

We are seeking a full-time Senior Research Fellow to manage analytical geochemistry research facilities and instrumentation and conduct research with faculty within the Department of Earth, Geographic, and Climate Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The Senior Research Fellow will manage the Cosmogenic Nuclide and X-ray Analytical Laboratores in support of research in geochemistry, geomorphology, volcanology, sedimentology, mineralogy,and petrology. Duties include sample preparation, mineral separation, wet chemistry, and operation and maintenance of a PANalytical Zetium Ultimate X-ray spectrograph and an ITRAX XRF core scanner.
The Senior Research Fellow will be primarily responsible for overseeing the daily operation of the facilities, including preparing samples, conducting high quality analyses, scheduling and training of internal and external users, maintaining and servicing facilities and
instruments, and ordering supplies. The Senior Research Fellow will work both independently and in collaboration with undergraduates, graduate students, postdocs, and professors in the two labs. Candidates with geoanalytical experience, including backgrounds in either
cosmogenic nuclide geochemistry or XRF elemental analysis, are encouraged to apply, and training will be provided for skills needed to manage both laboratories.
Essential Functions
Conduct research in collaboration with faculty, post-docs, graduate students, and undergraduate students.
Preparation of rock, soil, and sediment samples for cosmogenic nuclide and elemental analysis, including crushing, splitting, sieving, and powdering.
Work with chemicals, including hydrofluoric acid, and high temperature furnaces in environments with noise and high temperature; heavy lifting and prolonged periods of standing.
Operation, maintenance, and repair of a PANalytical Zetium (Ultimate edition) XRF.
Elemental Analyzer and a Cox Instruments ITRAX XRF core-scanner for analysis of major and trace element concentrations in earth materials, including rock, soil, and sediment cores.
Physical and chemical processing of geological samples in a clean room to produce purified extracts of beryllium and aluminum for cosmogenic nuclide measurements.
Fusion of powdered samples using platinum crucibles, fluxes and torches or high temperature furnaces.
Operation of an Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometer (ICP-OES), including preparation of calibration solutions from standards.
Operation and maintenance of a high purity Germanium gamma counter.
Strong organizational skills, including ability to follow detailed procedures, record keeping, data reduction, quality control, uncertainty analysis, sample archiving, and ability to meet deadlines.
Assisting with development of analytical methods.
Preparing and analyzing samples submitted by external users.
Training and supervising facility users in laboratory methods, instrumentation operation, and safety protocols.
Laboratory scheduling.
Instrument maintenance and repair, use and troubleshooting of instrumentation software.
Ordering supplies, billing internal and external laboratory users for analyses, managing cost center budgets.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to interact effectively and create and maintain relationships with a wide range of staff, faculty, students, and off- campus constituents.

Essential Functions
Conduct research related to climate change and water resources, with an emphasis on human dominated basins.
Develop and execute hydrologic and river basin model code, including assimilation of remotely sensed observations.
Engage with a variety of stakeholders in the Rio Grande Basin.
Write scientific publications, reports, policy briefs, and guidelines.
Present findings at regional and national conferences and organizing workshops.
Participate in weekly research meetings with faculty advisor(s); Participate in larger project team meetings and support project reporting activities required by project sponsor.
Provide support for and/or lead the preparation and submission of proposals for future research funding for the research group.
Meet weekly with graduate students working on related research projects to provide mentoring that supplements that provided by the faculty advisor(s).
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
PhD in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a related field, including hydrologic and earth sciences, systems analysis, data and information science, or hydroclimatology.
Demonstrated expertise in hydrologic modeling.
Ability to program in Python; conduct appropriate statistical analysis of experimental data.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students.
Ability to travel to project research meetings.

Salary Information
The University of Massachusetts Amherst expects to pay within an approximate range between $62,838 and $99,990 for this position. The specific pay for this position will be determined by the University based on consideration of all relevant factors when and if it decides to extend an offer of employment. Please note - the collective bargaining agreement sets hiring ranges based on years of experience as follows (1) 0-2 years of experience $62,838 and $66,286 (2) 3-4 years of experience $66,287 and $71,032 (3) 5+ years of experience $71,033 and $99,990.
