Job Summary:
Performs and/or directs others in the installation, operation, repair and servicing of laboratory and field prototype models and test equipment. Conducts a variety of complex tests. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, but not limited to:
Conducts the most complicated tests developing specific methods in accordance with the general test requirements and approved procedures.
Secures and reviews all available information to become familiar with test objectives and to set up test equipment.
Aligns or coordinates alignment of instruments and equipment with items to be tested and records data as the test progresses.

The Tickle College of Engineering is in the midst of an unprecedented period of growth and success including adding over 30 new faculty as part of ambitious cluster hiring campaigns led by Chancellor Donde Plowman and Dean Matthew Mench. The ResearchScientist will be responsible for the following:
Designing and executing experiments to evaluate cold spray deposition performance across metals, polymers, spatially graded, and hybrid material systems.
Optimizing spray parameters for both high- and low-pressure systems to achieve robust bonding, dimensional accuracy, and repeatability.
Characterizing as-sprayed materials and build quality using microscopy, profilometry, ultrasonic inspection, and mechanical evaluation.
Studying particle-substrate interactions, critical velocity behavior, and deposition efficiency across various feedstock types and substrates.

This work will be focused on utilizing a suite of computational boundary plasma physics and multiscale materials modeling techniques ranging from the SOL-PS and GITR codes for boundary plasma and impurity modeling, in addition to first principles- based electronic structure models to molecular dynamics and mesoscale models such as kinetic Monte Carlo or spatially-dependent reaction-diffusion-advection cluster dynamics. The integrated modeling of plasma material interactions also requires experience with code coupling frameworks such the integrated plasma simulator (IPS) framework to manage complex workflows associated with coupling plasma and material modeling codes.
The research faculty will work collaboratively with a team of faculty, postdoctoral associates, and students in Nuclear Engineering (NE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Materials Science and Engineering (MSE), and Physics, as well as scientists at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory.
Demonstrated Research Skills
Strong communication skills and a demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative team environment spanning experiments and modeling.

* .75% of incentive target for each 1% of revenue attainment up to 50% of quota;
* 1.5% of incentive target for each 1% of attainment between 50% and 75%;

* Once performance exceeds 100% attainment, incentive rates are at or above 1% for each 1% of attainment with no cap on incentive compensation.

This could also involve development, validation, and deployment of new physical and analytical testing methods towards improving our understanding of unique target materials. You will be working with scientists, engineers, technicians, and safety and quality assurance staff to support material testing and fabrication efforts that advance HFIR isotope production targets. We are seeking a person who can be a team player with excellent attention to detail, critical thinking ability, and strong communication skills.
Supporting the largest radioisotope production and research portfolio within the Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science for Isotope R&D and Production, as well as extensive isotope production programs for the DOE Office of Nuclear Energy and National Nuclear Safety Administration, this position will grant you the opportunity to work with rare nuclear materials, and the unique facilities at ORNL, including the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Radiochemical Engineering Development Center (REDC), as you help guide the strategic growth of our isotope production enterprise. This position will primarily support the Plutonium-238 Supply Program at ORNL that is responsible for producing plutonium-238 for NASA in support of powering deep space missions.
Major Duties/Rsponsibilities:
* Perform experimental and computational studies related to the development of neptunium targets within the Plutonium-238 Supply Program.
* Develop, validate, and deploy material property testing methodologies for the analysis of existing and new/advanced target designs. These methodologies principally include thermal diffusivity, thermal conductivity, and thermal expansion but also could include other mechanical and chemical properties, as necessary.
* Support research and development on alternative target designs, including alternative material matrices for pressed cermet pellets, complex geometries of pellets, novel encapsulation methodologies, and other innovations utilizing advanced manufacturing.
* Publish scientific papers and internal reports resulting from this research and present results at the appropriate settings.

Basic Qualifications:
* To be eligible you must have completed a PhD in materials science, chemistry, physics, engineering, or a related field with in the last 5 years.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience with experimental and computational approaches to characterizing thermophysical behavior of materials.
* Experience developing analytical descriptions of material systems to improve outcomes for application spaces.
