Title: Research Scientist Schedule: minimum 20 hours/week, Mon-Fri A research scientist with expertise in immunohistochemistry assists in a series of studies testing potential treatments in models of Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease and stroke. The research scientist will help in the design of the projects, collecting and processing of brain samples, microscopic analyses of the tissue, statistical analyses of the experimental results, and manuscript preparation. In addition, the research scientist will assist in ordering necessary supplies and equipment, preparation of grant applications, and training students and research fellows on immunohistochemical techniques. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: The research scientist will work on a collaborative projects between CMU and Insight Research and will report to Drs. Abeer Gharaibeh and Gary L. Dunbar, co- investigator of the projects. The Center for High Order Plasma Turbulence Modeling for Z-Pinch (HighZ: https://highz-fic.github.io ), a Department of Energy (DOE), Predictive Science Academic Alliance Program (PSAAP) and Focused Investigatory Center (FIC) center, is seeking to hire a postdoctoral research associate in the broad areas of high performance computing and machine learning. HighZ is focused on developing scalable high order methods, enhanced with surrogate models for subscale physics, for modeling of pinching plasmas. This research associate will work with the Michigan State University (MSU) team to develop new scalable algorithms inside of the Parthenon framework, an AMR performance portable framework based on Kokkos and C++ supported by Los Alamos National Laboratory. At full strength there will be 7 PhD students and one postdoctoral research associate working on different aspects of this effort and integrating their work in Parthenon. The candidate will develop novel algorithms that advance the use of computer vision in precision livestock farming (PLF) and improve animal welfare. The proposed study will use metrics collected on research and commercial farms to determine a non-invasive method using thermal cameras and animal-based behaviors to reflect the animal's thermal neutral zone (TNZ). The project will provide updated standards for managing animal comfort and reflect an adjustment to the TNZ of breeding swine (sows, gilts, and boars). Adapting new standards will ensure that animal well-being is optimal, the on-farm energy use is maximized, and work to differentiate Michigan products for the consumer. The candidate will work within the Department of Large Animal Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Michigan State University (MSU) and collaborate with MSU-Extension and University of Nebraska - Lincoln (UNL). A Research Associate (Post-Doc) position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Zhiyong Xi in the Department of Microbiology, Genetics, & Immunology at Michigan State University. The position is available starting immediately with three years of funding guaranteed with a possibility of an extension based on progress and performance. The main project is to work on cutting-edge research to study the artificial symbiosis between the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia and Anopheles malaria vectors.
