SeaLandAire Technologies in Jackson, Michigan is looking for an Acoustic Research Scientist. The position requires an experienced acoustic research scientist, preferably with significant knowledge of underwater acoustic science. This position will contribute significantly to SeaLandAire's advanced acoustic sensing capabilities and will help lead the anti-submarine warfare (ASW) community by defining and developing ASW technology. The candidate shall have the ability to design test scenarios, analyze test data, and assess compliance with respect to the overall system requirements. The ideal candidate will have expertise in frequency and time domain signal processing, beamforming, filtering, noise analysis, statistical analysis, and sonar processing methodologies for both passive and active systems. Title: Research Scientist Schedule: minimum 20 hours/week, Mon-Fri A research scientist with expertise in immunohistochemistry assists in a series of studies testing potential treatments in models of Alzheimer's disease, Huntington's disease and stroke. We seek to recruit a highly motivated and skilled postdoctoral researcher to investigate how nematodes respond to chemical and environmental cues, with the goal of advancing plant resilience through improved understanding of plant-nematode interactions and stress tolerance mechanisms. This position supports two research initiatives. In collaboration with researchers from Center for Sustainable Plant Innovation and Resilience through International Teamwork (C-SPIRIT), the successful candidate will investigate the effects of plant-derived compounds on nematode physiology, behavior, and survival, with the goal of discovering natural products that protect crops from parasitic nematodes such as root-knot nematodes. This shift involves replacing vacuum tube amplifiers with microelectronic chip amplifiers that outperform the current systems, but adapting them for the harsh environment of space presents challenges. This project addresses two significant barriers: thermal management and radiation tolerance. A buildup of heat can affect the transistors' tolerance to high-energy particles from the sun and other cosmic bodies, making them more susceptible to single event effects (SEE) that disrupt space communications or even end multi-billion-dollar space missions. However, incorporating a diamond layer beneath a transistor body could help dissipate heat and effectively trap radiation-induced charges, protecting the sensitive transistors. The project aims to refine the processing and polishing of polycrystalline diamond (PCD) membranes to create suitable surfaces for interfacing with thinned gallium nitride (GaN) transistors, develop amplifier circuits by integrating these transistors with other electrical components to efficiently amplify radio frequency (RF) signals, and assess the radiation performance of the devices by testing their sensitivity to radiation exposure. It leverages recent advances in PCD membranes by MSU and Fraunhofer USA, as well as the new SEE space electronics testing facility being built on campus. These advances will position the University as a leader in advanced space communication technologies.
