ROLE of the POSITION The Department of Geoscience University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) invites applications for a non-tenure track teaching-focused Research Scientist in Mineral Resource Management. This 9-month position is supported by Nevada Gold Mines, is a temporary fixed term appointment with potential for renewal up to five years or more, and will focus on the development of undergraduate and graduate level teaching of key aspects of Mineral Resource Management to support the needs of the minerals industry in the western USA and beyond. We seek outstanding applicants with academic and industry experience in the following areas and beyond who will work with existing geology faculty at UNLV to develop in-person and online courses focused on enabling the smooth transition of graduate and undergraduate students into the minerals industry-related workforce: * Resource Estimation * Techniques in Mining Geology * Ore Deposit Geology * Economics, Processing & Environment * Excavation & Geomechanics * Environmental, Social, and Governmental Challenges The Nevada Gold Mines Research Scientist in Mineral Resource Management position is ideally suited for individuals already in academia or those who wish to make the transition from industry or government positions. The UNLV Geoscience Department currently has 21 Faculty, 150 undergraduate students, and more than 40 MS/PhD students and is expanding Economic Geology capacity, as evidenced by the recent appointment of a new tenure-track professor focused in this area. The Department hosts laboratory facilities including stable isotope, argon geochronology, fluid inclusions, XRD, Laser ablation, Quadrupole ICPMS, soils, high pressure piston cylinder apparatus, and electron microprobe/SEM labs. The postdoc will work as part of an interdisciplinary team of geophysicists, hydrogeologists, soil physicists, and agricultural scientists at UNLV and the SAWS unit. This is a full-time, 12-month position and is renewable for up to 2 years upon mutual agreement. ROLE of the POSITION The project will focus on the use of borehole nuclear magnetic resonance to image and monitor the redistribution of water content in the vadose zone as a basis for modeling unsaturated flow in the Central Valley. Additional geophysical data sources such as transient electromagnetic soundings may be incorporated as well. The postdoc will be responsible for coordinating the logistics of regular data acquisition campaigns, processing and interpreting the geophysical data, and incorporating the geophysical data, as well as relevant ancillary data, into hydrogeological simulations being developed at UNLV and the SAWS unit using tools such as ParFlow-CLM. Note that the primary duty station for the postdoc will likely be at the SAWS unit in Davis, CA, though station at the Department of Geoscience at UNLV may also be considered. However, travel to UNLV will be accommodated when necessary to advance project goals. PROFILE of the DEPARTMENT The UNLV Geoscience Department currently has 20 Faculty, 150 undergraduate students, more than 40 graduate students and a dozen postdoctoral scholars and research staff. The primary work location will be at the Nevada National Security Site (located 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas, Nevada), with occasional work taking place at the North Las Vegas facility. Work schedule for this position will be 4/10's, Monday - Thursday (subject to change). Travel, as needed, to support experiments, workshops and other collaborative activities. Key Responsibilities Work as a member of a small team supporting engineers, scientists, and technicians in operating, maintaining, and testing, complex pulse power systems including discrete diagnostic systems. Support DPF operations. Support tritium operations. Support radiation detection aspects for NDSE mission. Support data acquisition during DPF operations. Guide implementation and utilization of tritium handling. Identify opportunities to increase efficiency of DPF Operations. Support WFO contracts for DPF activities (private sector, DOD, etc). Engage with the plasma physics R&D communities at NNSS, partner labs, and other outside organizations. Conducts research, data compilation, and data analysis associated with DPF experiments. Serves as a tritium-specific SME to the DPF team and management. Coaches and mentors new and less experienced scientists, engineers, and technicians. Develops and maintains DPF machine and operations documentation such as procedures and system drawings. Review project design and technical documents. Execute work in a disciplined manner to demonstrate compliance with company policies and procedures. Fulfill project objectives in highly multidisciplinary teams exercising sound judgment in collaboration with peers. Promote diversity, equity, and inclusion within the program. Prepare technical and non-technical reports, procedures, and plans associated with DPF experiment operations. Perform other duties as assigned.
