This is a major strategic portfolio increase across basic, translational, clinical, and population science research efforts in diabetes. Successful candidates will join a highly collaborative team including half a dozen recently recruited faculty. Overview The Nexus Water Group team has an opportunity for Laboratory Technician. As a Laboratory Technician, you will perform laboratory tests to determine biological, biochemical, and physical characteristics of water and wastewater samples. The Laboratory Technician will also perform minor supporting administrative functions. Receives samples and respective paperwork from operators. Verifies recorded information on sample bottles, chain of custody forms, and sample log for accuracy. Work location and Schedule This position is located in Birmingham, AL. Regular hours Monday - Friday. Overtime or Flex scheduling may be required during other than regular hours for operational Minimal travel required. What You'll Do * Sets up, adjusts and operates laboratory equipment and instruments. * Receives samples and respective paperwork from operators. Verifies recorded information on sample bottles, chain of custody forms and sample log for accuracy. * Delivers samples and supplies to designated work areas. * Stores samples in refrigerator or incubator in manner specified by supervisor. * Tests samples for presence and content of elements or substances such as suspended solids, total solids, volatile solids, organics as measured by biochemical oxygen demand, ammonia nitrogen, total nitrogen, fecal coliform and other constituents found in water and wastewater samples. * Calculates and records test results on standardized forms. Prepares graphs and charts as requested. * Performs quality control analyses, as required, and provides documentation in daily log book. * Disposes of old sample material and cleans, dries and stores sample bottles. Maintains inventory of clean, capped sample bottles in an orderly manner for operators. * Prepares cleaning solutions according to manufacturer's directions or as specified by supervisor. * Cleans, sterilizes and stores laboratory glassware, equipment and instruments. * Calibrates and maintains records of laboratory instruments. * Prepare chemical solutions according to standard formulas and applies identification labels. What You'll Bring Experience * 0 - 2 years of experience in a lab position responsible for following analytical procedures, including the performance of tests to generate results. Education and Licenses * High School education or equivalent is required * Must have a valid Alabama driver's license with an acceptable driving record, as determined by the Company's insurance carrier.
