Summary:
The Cath Lab Technologist is responsible for assisting in diagnostic and interventional cardiovascular procedures in the cardiac catheterization lab. This role involves preparing patients and equipment, monitoring hemodynamic data, assisting physicians during procedures, and ensuring patient safety throughout the process. The technologist operates specialized imaging equipment, maintains sterile technique, and collaborates with the healthcare team to provide high-quality patient care. This position requires technical expertise in cardiovascular procedures, critical thinking skills, and the ability to work efficiently in high-pressure situations.
Essential Work Functions:
Prepare and position patients for cardiac catheterization, angioplasty, stent placement, electrophysiology studies, and other interventional procedures
Assist physicians during procedures by passing catheters, wires, balloons, and stents, and operating fluoroscopy and hemodynamic monitoring equipment
Operate and maintain imaging equipment, contrast injectors, and hemodynamic monitoring systems, ensuring proper functionality
Scrub in and assist with sterile field setup, ensuring adherence to infection control and procedural protocols
Perform sheath removal and hemostasis using manual compression or closure devices as directed
Maintain accurate documentation, including patient records, imaging data, and equipment logs
Assist with inventory management, stocking supplies, and ensuring proper storage of sterile instruments and medications
Adhere to radiation safety protocols, ensuring proper use of lead aprons, shields, and dosimeters
Ensure compliance with hospital policies, safety guidelines, and regulatory requirements
Adhere to hospital safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and regulatory standards

General Summary:

Performs research laboratory assignments involving some variety in accordance with standard practices and procedures. The candidate will be responsible for maintaining the colonies of transgenic and knockout mouse, breeding of mice, record-keeping, animal protocols submissions/modifications, working closely with Vivarium and DLAM staff, cigarette smoke inhalation exposure to mice, carrying out the laboratory experiments in vitro cell culture and in vivo (cigarette smoke, e-cigarette and waterpipe/hookah exposure to mice and procedures) and assisting several technicians and fellows in the laboratory, in addition to managing all aspects of animal protocols and laboratory work from data generation to data analysis. Responsibilities include placing orders for animals and lab supplies, scheduled maintenance for lab instruments, oversight and routine biochemical and molecular biological assays. Responsibilities will also include: engaging in experimental design and independent execution of above methods/protocols/assays; overseeing general laboratory functions such as inventory and ordering of supplies; and training of new laboratory personnel in fundamental lab techniques. Work with students and fellows/coordinators on basic and clinical research projects in collecting biological samples and perform experiments and assays (cell biology, biochemical and molecular biology techniques) in cells and biological tissues. Responsibilities:
Lab Techniques to be performed:
Western blotting, immunostaining, lung function measurements experiments, ELISA, Northern blotting, ribonuclease protection assays, tissue section staining, Diff-Quick staining, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization. RNA isolation and DNA isolation, ChIP assay, EMSA (gel shift assay), RT-PCR, restriction enzyme digests, plasmid purification and extraction, analyzing results and record keeping. Perform new experiments and assays in cells and tissues. Assist undergraduate students, graduate students and postdoctoral fellows to learn and perform assays, routine techniques/methods, and procedures for their experiments.
Duties include maintaining the colonies of transgenic and knockout mice:
Breeding of mice, record-keeping, animal protocols submissions/modifications, working closely with Vivarium and DLAM staffs, cigarette smoke inhalation exposure to mice and carrying out the laboratory experiments in vitro and in vivo (cigarette smoke exposure to mice) exposing cigarette smoke to mice, preparing cigarette smoke extracts. Animal Care: animal cigarette smoke exposures and inhalation (oral, s.c., i.m., i.v., or i.p.), lung and heart removal, dissection and tissue preparation. Maintaining UCAR paperwork/protocols, ordering new rodents, check animals daily, oversight of DLAM for their maintenance of one animal room. Keep track of various training and annual updates for all laboratory personnel so that the labs are in compliance with these offices. Ensure all other laboratory personnel are up-to-date on required laboratory and animal usage training. Coordinating of clinical studies with clinical research center and the lab, assist in subjects recruitment and collection of biological samples. Pick up samples from Clinical Research Labs and process for analyses.
Orders equipment and laboratory supplies, sets up experiments:
Cleans and performs routine maintenance on equipment. Duties will include filing of order forms, keeping schedule for equipment maintenance, maintenance of computer records for lab and equipment, maintenance of chemical inventory, autoclave items, interact with sales representatives, some cleaning and storing of glassware, oversight and record keeping for hazardous waste disposal. Plans and conducts standardized technical procedures and lab experiments. Set-up and operates equipment or instrumentation. Oversee and maintain laboratory.
Maintain laboratory supplies and inventories (chemicals, animals and equipment):
Serve in a managerial role to maintain laboratory inventory and address needs for instrument repair.
Collaborate with other personnel within the laboratory and investigators from other laboratories.
Participate in lab meetings and seminars. Assist the Principal Investigator with preparing figures, data sets and written text for grants and publications. Serve as liaison of laboratory to Departmental and University administration.
Other projects and job duties as assigned and as needs arise.
Qualifications:
- Associate's degree in Health Science, Biology, Chemistry or other science related field of study preferred.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- 5 years experience with performing basic sampling, monitoring or research activities; compiling and collecting data and preparing reports; or equivalent combination of education and experience required.
- Experience in animal (mouse) work and cell culture work with handling multi-tasks required.
- Experience in routine biochemical and molecular biological techniques, and practical laboratory and animal experience are desirable.
- Knowledge of OSHA Safety requirements and scientific methods required.
- Experiential knowledge of the workings of an academic research laboratory, including general knowledge of biochemistry, microbiology, and molecular biology methods. Microscopy skills are beneficial required.
- Prior experience in handling research animals, tissue culture, molecular and cell biology methodology and/or knowledge of immunologically-based techniques are desired.
- Ability to work independently and the capacity to design, organize, and analyze experimental data that serves as an invaluable tool in the publication of papers in scientific journals and obtaining future funding required.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, including written communication required.
- Must be willing to work with human biological samples, handling animals (mice) and animal tissues required.
- Good organizational skills, ability to use good judgment, and demonstrate attention to detail are necessary required.

**Responsibilities:**
GENERAL PURPOSE
The Anderson lab in the Cardiovascular Research Institute is looking for a highly motivated Laboratory Technician to assist with animal and cell-based experiments and with maintaining a mouse colony in the general support of a molecular biology research laboratory. The individual will be expected to achieve the ability to function independently. Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task are required. All necessary training will be provided, however experience in mouse handling, mammalian cell culture and transfection, and molecular biology techniques, such as Western blotting, PCR, qPCR, cloning, etc, are a plus. Under general guidance from the PI with latitude for exercising considerable independent judgment of handling lab techniques. This position has no official supervisory responsibility.
**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Perform molecular biology techniques and experiments in support of a research lab, ex. bacterial culture, mini- and maxi-prep of plasmid DNA, maintenance of mammalian cell culture lines, yeast culture, protein purification, etc.
+ Animal colony management for mouse colonies. Animal husbandry to include breeding, weaning, pairing, tail snip, and inventory maintenance.
+ Data entry into established database and spreadsheet for management of animal colonies; inventory control of animal numbers and UCAR accounts
+ Perform tissue harvests from adult mice and staged embryos and process using experimental procedures related to gene expression analysis (Realtime PCR, western blot, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization. lacZ reporter activity, etc.).
+ Independently and proactively perform general laboratory duties such as preparing various culture media (mammalian and bacterial), chemical solutions, reagents and re-stocking supplies for use by all lab members.
