Tenure Status Non-Tenure Track Minimum Qualifications PhD in preventive veterinary science, microbiology, molecular virology, or immunology Position Summary The Perez Lab in the Department of Population Health at the University of Georgia is recruiting a highly motivated Assistant Research Scientist to conduct research in the development of novel vaccines. This role presents an opportunity to conduct pioneering research focused on the development of novel recombinant vaccines. The successful candidate will utilize viral reverse genetics platforms, including the Newcastle Disease Virus (NDV) vector, to create effective bivalent recombinant vaccines against a broad spectrum of animal and zoonotic pathogens, such as Avian Influenza Virus, Infectious Bronchitis Virus, and Infectious Bursal Disease Virus. The group's research interests focus on the interspecies transmission, pathogenesis, and control of viruses of public health concern. The laboratory uses a wide range of in vitro and in vivo approaches to study the host range of viruses and improve existing or develop novel vaccines and antivirals. We have developed several vaccine platforms against influenza viruses, including vaccines to enhance the mucosal immune response. The Assistant Research Scientist will lead the development and evaluation of modified live virus vaccines based on NDV utilizing reverse genetics techniques, design and execute experiments, meticulously analyze collected data, and prepare comprehensive manuscripts and reports for publication in scientific journals. The Assistant Research Scientist will work with an international collaborative group of students, postdoctoral fellows, and researchers at the University of Georgia and abroad. Additional Requirements Background in pathogenesis, transmission, vaccine, and antivirals evaluation in different animal models such as mice, hamsters, chickens, and ferrets in ABSL2 or ABSL3 settings is required. Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification PhD in preventive veterinary science, microbiology, molecular virology, or immunology, with at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience. Training and proven track record in mucosal immunology, reverse genetics - specifically of paramyxoviruses -, molecular biology, in vitro transcription, development of vaccine platforms, and antiviral evaluation. Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies This position involves knowledge of molecular biological and virology procedures and techniques. Knowledge and demonstrated success with reverse genetics, development of vaccine platforms, antiviral evaluation, and mucosal immunology. Candidates should possess a proven record in reverse genetics, vaccine platform development, antiviral evaluation, and mucosal immunology, with expertise in establishing reverse genetic systems for Paramyxovirus being highly valued. Job Summary The GGC Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Office is seeking a motivated student assistant to support campus honeybee management and applied research activities. This position provides hands-on experience in honeybee care, apiary operations, and environmental research designed to advance sustainability and pollinator health on campus. The assistant will play a key role in maintaining two GGC apiary site, one rooftop Langstroth hive and one ground-level Langstroth hive located in a landscaped urban environment and will conduct a comparative study on honey production and colony performance across these two environments. Responsibilities * Assist in routine hive inspections for both rooftop and ground-level apiaries. * Monitor colony health, queen activity, brood patterns, pest/disease indicators, and environmental conditions. * Support hive maintenance tasks, including adding/removing supers, frames, and feeders; treating for pests (as authorized); and documenting hive status. * Assist in safe and sanitary honey extraction, filtering, bottling, and labeling. * Follow all GGC EHS safety procedures, including PPE requirements for apiary work. * Collect, record, and analyze data related to honey production, hive weight, population activity, and environmental factors. * Compare honey production and colony performance between: Rooftop Langstroth hive, and Ground-level Langstroth hive located in a natural, urban-landscaped area. * Conduct literature reviews on urban beekeeping, rooftop apiaries, and pollinator ecology. * Document findings in a scientific format using accepted research methods. * Maintain detailed research logs and contribute to EHS documentation for apiary operations. * Assist with environmental stewardship education and special events highlighting pollinator conservation and sustainability at GGC. * Support EHS staff with general tasks as needed. Position Summary Candidates in this full-time position will serve as the research assistants in the Liu lab affiliated with the Center for Neurological Disease Research, Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, and Department of Biomedical Sciences. The NIH-funded research projects in the Liu lab target cellular to system level mechanisms of signal processing in the brain for the sense of smell in normal physiological conditions or pathological conditions including neurodegeneration and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The incumbents in these positions will participate in animal-based experimental activities including survival and non-survival animal surgeries, immunohistochemistry, confocal imaging, physiological recordings, data collection and analysis, data presentation and project reports, technique development and execution, or other assignments from the supervisor or PI. Prior experience or skills in performing animal-based research including or stereotaxic neurosurgeries, tissue sectioning, immunohistochemical studies, electrophysiological recordings of neuronal signals, confocal imaging, behavioral tests in rodents, will be considered as core competencies for these positions.
