**Job Description**
Grid Automation and Control (GAC) Group of the Power Systems and Engineering Center (PSEC) at NREL is looking for an exceptional Ph.D. graduate to support research in the modeling and simulation of the modern power grids, while the power grid is transitioning to a grid with increasing growth of load and inverter-based resources(IBRs). The successful candidate will be working on cutting-edge projects in power system modeling, simulation, and stability analysis. The successful candidate is expected to bring in solid large-scale bulk power system modeling and simulation expertise to address the stability, reliability challenges of the future grid.
PSEC supports the science and technology goals of the U.S. Department of Energy, NREL, and industry partners toward a sustainable energy future. We work with the electricity industry and broader research community to conduct high-impact research and development that provides practical solutions to grid design and integration challenges that enable sustainable energy systems. PSEC uniquely combines the most advanced research techniques with real-world experience for achieving sustainable electricity grids.
The successful candidate will join the GAC group in the Power System Engineering Center (PSEC) at NREL, a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team of engineers, analysts, and software developers. GAC works to develop and apply state-of-the-art energy system modeling techniques, software, and simulations for breakthrough engineering and techno-economic analysis of the emerging future electric grid and broader interconnected energy system: transportation, buildings, gas, communication/controls, and beyond.
Job duties and responsibilities include:
+ Conduct transient analysis (small-signal, transient, and voltage stability) for high IBR-dominated systems.
+ Support large-scale system studies (e.g., national-scale scenarios) using commercial tools (e.g., PSSE, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD) or open-source tools (e.g., ParaEMT, ANDES and others).
+ Develop new type of electrical components (such as advanced pumped storage hydro, data center, etc.) for large-scale power grids study.
+ Support interconnection studies, grid impact assessments, and compliance studies.
+ Prepare the results in form of reports and presentations.
+ Write and publish results of analyses in peer-reviewed journals, transactions, conference proceedings, and/or technical reports.

**Additional Required Qualifications**
+ Relevant Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or related fields.
+ Solid background in power systems dynamics and modeling including load flow, short-circuit, and contingency analysis.
+ Proficiency with power system simulation tools in Phasor-domain (e.g.,PSSE, PSLF, Powerworld, etc, PSCAD or EMTP experience is a plus).
+ Strong understanding of inverter-based resource(IBR) integration challenges, and power system stability concepts.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Strong understanding of small-signal, transient, and voltage stability.
+ Hands-on experience developing **user-defined dynamic models** of IBRs in PSS/E or PSLF.
+ Familiarity with modeling of energy storage systems, including pumped-storage hydro and batteries.
+ Experience in modeling and simulation of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and stability analysis of high-IBR-dominated power systems.
+ Experience with data center modeling is a plus.
+ Hands-on experience with new IBR models (e.g., WECC REGFMA1, REGFMB1, vendor-provided models) is a plus.
+ Experience with software development in Python, C++, or other programming languages.
+ Hands-on experience developing **automated tools** for accelerating contingency analysis is a plus.
+ Strong analytical skills with the ability to process, interpret, and present technical results clearly.

Confiz is looking for a User Experience Researcher with extensive experience in both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. This role will be pivotal in shaping the user experience for enterprise applications through deep user insights, design thinking workshops, and a data-driven approach to design. The ideal candidate will have proven leadership experience and a strong ability to influence product and design teams with actionable research outcomes.
As a User Experience Researcher, you will guide and execute the research efforts that shape the design of large-scale enterprise software solutions. You will play a key role in delivering research-driven insights that improve user experience, reduce friction, and drive product success. Your focus will be on using design thinking workshops and a wide array of analytical methods to ensure that user needs and behaviors are clearly understood and effectively integrated into the design process.
You will lead a team of UX researchers, mentor junior staff, and work cross-functionally with designers, product managers, and developers to ensure the design solutions are backed by solid, user-centered research.
Responsibilities
Lead UX Research Strategy
Define and implement a comprehensive research strategy that informs the design of enterprise applications, ensuring that user insights are embedded in every stage of the product development lifecycle.
Conduct Design Thinking Workshops
Lead and facilitate design thinking workshops with clients, stakeholders, and cross-functional teams. These workshops will serve as a platform for co-creating user-centered solutions, building alignment, and uncovering actionable insights.
User Research & Analysis
Conduct a wide variety of research methods, including but not limited to:
User interviews and ethnographic studies
Usability testing and task analysis
Surveys and questionnaires
A/B testing and analytics
Journey mapping and persona development
Heuristic evaluations and competitive analysis
Data-Driven Decision Making
Leverage both qualitative and quantitative research findings to drive decisions and communicate research insights clearly. Use analytics tools and data sources to uncover patterns, identify pain points, and validate design assumptions.
User-Centered Design Advocacy
Champion the voice of the user throughout the product development process, ensuring that the enterprise application design is aligned with user needs and business objectives.
Mentor and Build Research Team
Lead and mentor a growing team of UX researchers, fostering a collaborative, research-driven culture. Provide guidance and career development support to junior researchers.
Collaborate Cross-Functionally
Work closely with UX designers, product managers, and technical teams to ensure that research insights translate into actionable design and development plans.
Stakeholder Communication
Present research findings to senior stakeholders, design teams, and clients, providing clear and actionable insights that influence key product decisions and align with project goals.
Continuous Improvement
Stay up-to-date with the latest UX research methodologies, tools, and best practices. Continuously improve research processes and methodologies to enhance the quality and impact of research across the organization.
Generative Research
This includes Onboarding, Payroll as Payment Type, and Guest Payment, which will help uncover deep understanding of users' contexts, challenges, and motivations, providing insights that drive innovative solutions and guide the early stages of product development.
Strategic Research Support
This includes Loyalty Program, Value Added Services (Add-on), and Multi-month Change Plan, which will help identify key user pain points, opportunities, and guide product development, ensuring the final product meets both user expectations and business objectives.
Usability Testing
This includes leading complex usability testing of designs and overseeing designers on usability testing, in evaluating how real users interact with a product, identify usability issues, and ensure the product is intuitive, efficient, and easy to use before it reaches the market.
Requirements
Experience
7+ years of professional experience in UX research, with at least 3 years in a leadership or senior role, preferably with experience in enterprise software or B2B solutions.
Proven track record of facilitating design thinking workshops and driving collaborative, user-centered design processes.
Extensive experience using both qualitative and quantitative research methods to inform product decisions and design strategies.
Research Skills & Tools
Proficiency in user research methods such as ethnography, interviews, surveys, usability testing, persona development, and journey mapping.
Strong experience with analytical methods, A/B testing, data interpretation, and using analytics platforms like Google Analytics, Hotjar, or similar tools.
Familiarity with design tools (e.g., Figma, Sketch) to collaborate with design teams and contribute to user interface development.
Collaboration & Leadership
Strong leadership skills with experience mentoring and guiding UX researchers, fostering a collaborative and creative research culture.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to articulate complex research findings to diverse audiences, including senior leadership and non-technical stakeholders.

Enterprise Application Experience

**Job Description**
The National Laboratory of the Rockies' (NLR) cybersecurity research is strengthening our grid against tomorrow's threats. This position supports the laboratory's Energy Threat Analysis Center (ETAC) with research efforts that includes but may not be limited to:
+ Cyber-physical vulnerabilities (e.g., energy systems, industrial control systems, distributed energy systems)

Job Description
The RRES Center is a talented team of scientists and technicians working in biological, chemical, and catalytic research . The center has strong thrusts in polymer design and upcycling, separations, synthetic biology and bioconversion, analytical sciences, computational modeling, and lignocellulosic chemistry and catalysis.
The successful candidate will work in the DOE-funded 'Integrating cell-free systems and genome engineering to accelerate biosystems design for carbon-negative biomanufacturing' project to develop optimized cell-free systems for the conversion of C1 substrates to sustainable biofuels and bioproducts. The specific role will require identifying, expressing, purifying, and assaying enzymes from full metabolic pathways, developing high-throughput enzymatic assays for pathway validation, and working with data scientists to develop efficient cell-free production pathways. The project will be in collaboration done in close connection with industrial partners and researchers at NLR and collaborating institutions.
The successful candidate will utilize biochemical assays to measure enzyme activities and conduct directed evolution, structure-guided protein engineering, and machine learning-guided protein engineering studies to improve enzyme and pathway function. The ability to conduct laboratory experiments with minimal supervision with the utmost regard to safety is required, as well as the ability to learn new techniques and protocols.
