**Job Description**
Grid Automation and Control (GAC) Group of the Power Systems and Engineering Center (PSEC) at NREL is looking for an exceptional Ph.D. graduate to support research in the modeling and simulation of the modern power grids, while the power grid is transitioning to a grid with increasing growth of load and inverter-based resources(IBRs). The successful candidate will be working on cutting-edge projects in power system modeling, simulation, and stability analysis. The successful candidate is expected to bring in solid large-scale bulk power system modeling and simulation expertise to address the stability, reliability challenges of the future grid.
PSEC supports the science and technology goals of the U.S. Department of Energy, NREL, and industry partners toward a sustainable energy future. We work with the electricity industry and broader research community to conduct high-impact research and development that provides practical solutions to grid design and integration challenges that enable sustainable energy systems. PSEC uniquely combines the most advanced research techniques with real-world experience for achieving sustainable electricity grids.
The successful candidate will join the GAC group in the Power System Engineering Center (PSEC) at NREL, a highly interdisciplinary and collaborative team of engineers, analysts, and software developers. GAC works to develop and apply state-of-the-art energy system modeling techniques, software, and simulations for breakthrough engineering and techno-economic analysis of the emerging future electric grid and broader interconnected energy system: transportation, buildings, gas, communication/controls, and beyond.
Job duties and responsibilities include:
+ Conduct transient analysis (small-signal, transient, and voltage stability) for high IBR-dominated systems.
+ Support large-scale system studies (e.g., national-scale scenarios) using commercial tools (e.g., PSSE, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD) or open-source tools (e.g., ParaEMT, ANDES and others).
+ Develop new type of electrical components (such as advanced pumped storage hydro, data center, etc.) for large-scale power grids study.
+ Support interconnection studies, grid impact assessments, and compliance studies.
+ Prepare the results in form of reports and presentations.
+ Write and publish results of analyses in peer-reviewed journals, transactions, conference proceedings, and/or technical reports.
_This will be a hybrid position (mix of in-person work at South Table Mountain Campus in Golden, CO and work-from-home days, in any given work week), unless otherwise agreed upon by the Hiring Manager._

**Additional Required Qualifications**
+ Relevant Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or related fields.
+ Solid background in power systems dynamics and modeling including load flow, short-circuit, and contingency analysis.
+ Proficiency with power system simulation tools in Phasor-domain (e.g.,PSSE, PSLF, Powerworld, etc, PSCAD or EMTP experience is a plus).
+ Strong understanding of inverter-based resource(IBR) integration challenges, and power system stability concepts.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Strong understanding of small-signal, transient, and voltage stability.
+ Hands-on experience developing **user-defined dynamic models** of IBRs in PSS/E or PSLF.
+ Familiarity with modeling of energy storage systems, including pumped-storage hydro and batteries.
+ Experience in modeling and simulation of inverter-based resources (IBRs) and stability analysis of high-IBR-dominated power systems.
+ Experience with data center modeling is a plus.
+ Hands-on experience with new IBR models (e.g., WECC REGFMA1, REGFMB1, vendor-provided models) is a plus.
+ Experience with software development in Python, C++, or other programming languages.
+ Hands-on experience developing **automated tools** for accelerating contingency analysis is a plus.
+ Strong analytical skills with the ability to process, interpret, and present technical results clearly.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Customer Insights Researcher provides the foundation for the customer-centric interview work that we do at Strategyn. The National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR), a leader in energy systems research, is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Researcher to join our Grid Planning and Analysis Center (GPAC). This position will focus on tackling critical optimization challenges in medium-term power system planning like maintenance planning, hydro reservoir planning and storage cycle budget allocations.
You will join a dynamic team of researchers developing cutting-edge computational tools to design and operate the next generation of reliable, resilient, and clean electric power grids. This role involves formulating and solving complex optimization problems and integrating them into the Sienna Platform for the simulation of large-scale systems.
The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in operations research, control theory or power systems and a passion for applying these skills to real-world energy problems at large scale.
Primary Responsibilities
Develop and implement novel mathematical optimization models (e.g., stochastic programming, robust optimization, mixed-integer linear programming) for medium-term grid planning.
Design and code efficient algorithms for large-scale optimization problems using the Julia programming language and packages such as JuMP.jl. Experience with Xpress and Gurobi are a plus.

Design Workshop has proudly carried forward this mission through the Dr. Charles Fountain Internship Program, offering career-bound students from all backgrounds the chance to immerse themselves in a collaborative, mission-driven design studio. Our goal is to give students real access to professional practice, mentorship, and leadership pathways.
The Experience
This 10-week, paid, immersive summer internship places you directly on project teams working on real-world challenges in landscape architecture, planning, and the built environment. You'll learn how projects move from idea to impact-while gaining the technical, creative, and professional skills that set future leaders apart.
You'll be part of a firmwide cohort of interns, balancing hands-on studio work with participation in the Dr. Charles Fountain focus project, designed to foster leadership, collaboration, and purpose-driven design.
Through close mentorship and team-based learning, interns gain:

Exposure to project management and client engagement
Technical and business skill development
Insight into careers shaping communities, cities, and landscapes

**Job Description**
The National Laboratory of the Rockies' (NLR) cybersecurity research is strengthening our grid against tomorrow's threats. This position supports the laboratory's Energy Threat Analysis Center (ETAC) with research efforts that includes but may not be limited to:
+ Cyber-physical vulnerabilities (e.g., energy systems, industrial control systems, distributed energy systems)
+ Threat modeling and implementation of adversarial Tactics, Techniques, and Procedures (TTPs) using state-of-the-art modeling and simulation tools
This internship will include exposure to cybersecurity subject matter experts across the Department of Energy laboratory complex, and private industry utility experts.
Responsibilities for this internship will include but may not be limited to:
+ Develop attack scenarios within a modeled utility environment
+ Use open-source tools to create system models used to validate the effectiveness of adversarial TTPs
+ Contribute to the software development efforts of the NLR Cyber Range
+ Collaborate with NLR research staff to develop AI tools and processes to accelerate research and understand AI's impact on electricity systems
+ Analyze cybersecurity artifacts within test environments to assess adversarial scenarios
