Researcher, Misalignment Research
Researcher job in New York, NY
About the Team
Safety Systems sits at the forefront of OpenAI's mission to build and deploy safe AGI, ensuring our most capable models can be released responsibly and for the benefit of society. Within Safety Systems, we are building a misalignment research team to focus on the most pressing problems for the future of AGI. Our mandate is to identify, quantify, and understand future AGI misalignment risks far in advance of when they can pose harm.
The work of this research taskforce spans four pillars:
Worst‑Case Demonstrations - Craft compelling, reality‑anchored demos that reveal how AI systems can go wrong. We focus especially on high importance cases where misaligned AGI could pursue goals at odds with human well being.
Adversarial & Frontier Safety Evaluations - Transform those demos into rigorous, repeatable evaluations that measure dangerous capabilities and residual risks. Topics of interest include deceptive behavior, scheming, reward hacking, deception in reasoning, and power-seeking, along with other related areas.
System‑Level Stress Testing - Build automated infrastructure to probe entire product stacks, assessing end‑to‑end robustness under extreme conditions. We treat misalignment as an evolving adversary, escalating tests until we find breaking points even as systems continue to improve.
Alignment Stress‑Testing Research - Investigate why mitigations break, publishing insights that shape strategy and next‑generation safeguards. We collaborate with other labs when useful and actively share misalignment findings to accelerate collective progress.
About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Researcher who is passionate about red‑teaming and AI safety. In this role you will design and execute cutting‑edge attacks, build adversarial evaluations, and advance our understanding of how safety measures can fail-and how to fix them. Your insights will directly influence OpenAI's product launches and long‑term safety roadmap.
In this role, you will
Design and implement worst‑case demonstrations that make AGI alignment risks concrete for stakeholders, focused on high stakes use cases described above.
Develop adversarial and system‑level evaluations grounded in those demonstrations, driving adoption across OpenAI.
Create automated tools and infrastructure to scale automated red‑teaming and stress testing.
Conduct research on failure modes of alignment techniques and propose improvements.
Publish influential internal or external papers that shift safety strategy or industry practice. We aim to concretely reduce existential AI risk.
Partner with engineering, research, policy, and legal teams to integrate findings into product safeguards and governance processes.
Mentor engineers and researchers, fostering a culture of rigorous, impact‑oriented safety work.
You might thrive in this role if you
Already are thinking about these problems night and day, and share our mission to build safe, universally beneficial AGI and align with the OpenAI Charter.
Have 4+ years of experience in AI red‑teaming, security research, adversarial ML, or related safety fields.
Possess a strong research track record-publications, open‑source projects, or high‑impact internal work-demonstrating creativity in uncovering and exploiting system weaknesses.
Are fluent in modern ML / AI techniques and comfortable hacking on large‑scale codebases and evaluation infrastructure.
Communicate clearly with both technical and non‑technical audiences, translating complex findings into actionable recommendations.
Enjoy collaboration and can drive cross‑functional projects that span research, engineering, and policy.
Hold a Ph.D., master's degree, or equivalent experience in computer science, machine learning, security, or a related discipline (nice to have but not required).
What we Offer
A chance to shape safety practices at the frontier of AGI. Your work will directly lower the changes of catastrophic misalignment.
Access to cutting‑edge models, tooling, and compute resources.
A highly collaborative, mission‑driven environment with world‑class colleagues.
Competitive compensation, equity, and benefits.
If you're excited to push AI systems to-and beyond-their limits so we can deploy them safely, we'd love to hear from you! Join us in the taking on the most important challenge for the world today.

Machine Learning Researcher
Researcher job in New York, NY
Our goals are to give you a real sense of what it's like to work at Jane Street full time as a Machine Learning Researcher, and a truly unparalleled educational experience. You'll work side by side with experienced ML Researchers on projects that we've selected for their combination of novel ML ideas and relevance to real-world systematic trading strategies. You'll learn how we think about markets through challenging classes and activities, and practice using established methods alongside our own unique twists to train practical models.
At Jane Street, the lines between research, technology, and trading are intentionally blurry. As our strategies grow more sophisticated, close collaboration is essential for continuing to push the boundaries of what's possible. We work with petabytes of data, a computing cluster with hundreds of thousands of cores, and a growing GPU cluster containing thousands of high-end GPUs. Trading poses unusual challenges-large models and nonstationary datasets in a competitive multi-agent environment-that force us to search for novel techniques.
You'll spend the bulk of your internship working closely with full-time machine learning researchers on projects drawn from their own work. You might conduct an end-to-end study of an unexplored dataset, try a new modeling paradigm for a thorny problem, or consider blue-sky approaches that we're still trying to figure out. The problems we work on rarely have clean, definitive answers, and they often require insights from colleagues across the firm with different areas of expertise. Depending on the day, you might be diving deep into market data, tuning hyperparameters, debugging training issues, or analyzing the predictions your model makes.
Note that given the IP-sensitive nature of machine learning research at Jane Street, it is unlikely that any research findings associated with the internship will be suitable for outside academic publication.
About You
If you've never thought about a career in finance, you're in good company. Many of us were in the same position before working here. If you have a curious mind and a passion for solving interesting problems, we have a feeling you'll fit right in. You should be:
A PhD student or postdoc with practical experience working on empirical ML research problems
Interested in applying logical and mathematical thinking to all kinds of problems
Curious about the machine learning landscape and excited to apply state-of-the-art techniques drawn from many problem domains
Fluent with a versatile set of models and tricks
Able to rapidly implement and iterate on your ideas in Python and your favorite ML framework
Eager to ask questions, admit mistakes, and learn new things
If you'd like to learn more, you can read about our interview process and meet some of the team. Learn more about Jane Street's internship program here.
If you're a recruiting agency and want to partner with us, please reach out to **********************************.

Auto-ApplyResearch Intern, Summer 2026
Researcher job in New York, NY
About Basis
Basis is a nonprofit applied AI research organization with two mutually reinforcing goals.
The first is to understand and build intelligence. This means to establish the mathematical principles of what it means to reason, to learn, to make decisions, to understand, and to explain; and to construct software that implements these principles.
The second is to advance society's ability to solve intractable problems. This means expanding the scale, complexity, and breadth of problems that we can solve today, and even more importantly, accelerating our ability to solve problems in the future.
To achieve these goals, we're building both a new technological foundation that draws inspiration from how humans reason, and a new kind of collaborative organization that puts human values first.
About the Role
Research interns work closely with scientists and engineers at Basis, learning from and contributing to our team. Internships are open to graduate-level candidates (or equivalent), pursuing research in technical and scientific domains, including areas of computer science such as machine learning, and programming languages.
We are looking for people who want to grow technically and who value gaining a deeper understanding of concepts at their foundations.
We expect you to:
Have demonstrated an ability to do high-quality scientific research. Possible ways to demonstrate this include publications, technical reports, and software projects
In addition, the following would be an advantage:
Excited about solving real world problems and having positive societal impact
Activities
Develop and explore computational theories of intelligence, including reasoning, learning, and decision-making
In close collaboration with domain experts inside and especially outside Basis, work as a team member to help solve scientific and societal problems
Distill insights from solving problems into more general mathematical and computational theories
Contribute to open-source software
(Optionally) Publish and present findings in journals and conferences
Contribute to the culture and direction of Basis
Potential projects
Interns will be placed with one of our active projects, according to project needs and intern fit. In particular, we have openings within the following areas:
Dynamical Systems + Machine Learning at Basis
We're seeking interns interested in developing the theory and methods that let us
learn how systems work
from data-and quantify what we don't know. This work sits at the intersection of machine learning, dynamical systems, and uncertainty quantification, with the goal of advancing how we represent, infer, and forecast complex real-world processes under uncertainty.
Projects may be theoretical (developing foundations for learning and reasoning about dynamics), methodological or engineering-focused (building and integrating algorithms into our universal reasoning engine), or applied (using our existing toolkits to study systems such as animal behavior and robot co-design).
Interns should have familiarity with differential equations, machine learning, and Bayesian inference.
Collaborative Intelligent Systems
We study collaborative intelligent systems in the wild, focusing on how social species coordinate, communicate, and adapt in complex environments. Our work spans multiple levels of behavior, from fine-grained group foraging and navigation decisions to city-scale ecological and evolutionary dynamics. Using multimodal data (audio, video, environmental, and genetic), we develop probabilistic and dynamical systems models that investigate how communication and cooperation shape resilience in changing ecosystems. Interns will contribute to data analysis, modeling, or field data collection for our “behavioral weather station” network monitoring social species across cities.
Key skills: interest in animal behavior or collective systems; experience with data science, machine learning. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in at least one of the following areas: dynamical systems modeling, multimodal data analysis, multi-agent simulation.
MARA - Modeling, Abstraction & Reasoning Agents
Science advances by discovering useful abstractions. MARA operationalizes this insight into software agents. Instead of passively absorbing data, MARA agents propose hypotheses, run physical or simulated experiments, and revise models of the world until a compact, coherent theory emerges. Early results show MARA systems solving previously unresolved (ARC) Abstraction and Reasoning Corpus tasks; widely considered among the hardest AI benchmarks today. We are also opening a new branch of the project to bring MARA into the physical world, with embodied agents (robots) that learn from experience, build internal representations, and apply "everyday science" human-like reasoning to solve problems. Read the latest from MARA on our blog.
Role Details
FT/PT: This is a full-time position.
Start and end dates: This is typically a summer position but the dates are flexible. The internship should span at least three months.
Location: This is an in-person position in either the New York City or Boston/Cambridge area.
Salary: $100,000 annually
Application close date:
We will begin reviewing applications for Summer 2026 in October, and the application will remain open until the cohort is full.
