Are you an OSU undergraduate student who loves the outdoors, is looking for field research opportunities, and is eager to learn more about snowpack and hydrology? Dr. Mark Raleigh and the Cryosphere Interactions and Geospatial Hydrology Team (CryoSIGHT; ********************** Link is external, Link opens in new window) are looking to hire ~2 OSU undergraduate field assistants to collect mountain snowpack data over a series of measurement campaigns in winter and spring 2026. The field assistants will work with the CryoSIGHT team during a series of irregularly scheduled field campaigns that are expected to run from February through May 2026. We anticipate 4-6 total field campaigns. Tentative dates of the field campaigns are listed in a Google Form (see application instructions) but are subject to change due to weather, road/snow conditions, and coordination with other measurements (e.g., airborne and drone surveys). Therefore, flexibility is essential. An initial training session will be provided (exact date TBD). Each assistant is expected to contribute a total of approximately 60-80 hours of work over the four-month duration of the position. The workload will be highly variable; weeks with measurement campaigns will involve 16-20 hours of work, while weeks without campaigns may have limited or no hours of work. For each campaign, transportation will be provided from the OSU main campus to study areas in the Oregon Cascades (typically 2-3 hour drive one-way from Corvallis, depending on site). Eligible undergraduate students from other OSU campuses are welcome to apply; however, transportation is only provided from Corvallis. Field campaigns may require multiple overnight stays near the study areas, with lodging and food costs covered. Typical field campaigns are expected to last from Thursday late afternoon (depart Corvallis) to Saturday evening (return to Corvallis in the evening). In the field, students will conduct multiple types of snowpack measurements, including: (1) digging snow pits and measuring vertical snow properties; (2) collecting and retaining snow samples for isotope analysis; (3) measuring bulk snow properties along snow courses/transect; (4) assisting the PI with drone/UAS measurements; (5) maintaining time-lapse cameras for snow depth measurements. After each field campaign, the undergraduate field assistants will work together to ensure accurate and complete digitizing of collected data. The assistants are paid only for their time spent in the field or conducting office work related to fieldwork (e.g., digitizing data). Additionally, the undergraduate field assistants will work as a team to prepare a brief report summarizing the data collected in the field, key findings, and lessons learned. This report is due to the PI by the end of the academic year.
