Shelter Worker/Resident Assistant - Men's Shelter (On-Call)

Under the direct supervision of the Program Manager, the Resident Assistant will provide support to shelter residents and create a hospitable and safe environment in the Men's shelter. This is an On-Call position, filling in for part/full time staff and open shifts. Must be able to work at least one eight hour shift per month (potential for more hours) and cover at least 2 holidays per year.
Responsibilities
Provide support to shelter residents.
Monitor the activities of the residents within the shelter environment. Complete daily Shift Log check-list during your shift. Review and record Communication Log each shift.
Conduct security wanding upon resident admission, as well as random wand checks.
Monitor the physical facility by making rounds every half hour and conducting periodic inspections to ensure rooms are clean, facility is secure and that clients are abiding by house rules.
Make referrals to alternative emergency shelter providers when Program beds are unavailable.
Maintain basic record keeping responsibilities. This includes performing electronic intakes in the database and completing accurate time sheets in a timely manner in ADP .
Check your individual work email daily.
Attend and participate in monthly Staff meetings/Resident meetings.
Attend relevant In-Service training/conferences, as requested.
Complete all mandatory training (in-person and online) in a timely manner.
Clean linens, maintain cleanliness of facility (inside and perimeter).
Other duties as assigned.

Works closely with residents to assure effective communication between residents and program staff

Conducts hourly rounds, inspections and overnight visual checks (if working the overnight shift) to ensure presence of residents.
Performs laundry, room preparation, and housekeeping tasks, if needed

Ensures the accuracy of records and logs in accordance with regulatory and agency guidelines.
Responsible for completing all duties and responsibilities of the RA role while on shift
Notifies Supervision of any emergency situations immediately.

Visually verify presence of all clients as well as ensuring accurate documentation of the presence of all residents by completing sign in/out sheets.
Maintains safety and organization cleanliness of residence during shift
Acts as a liaison with residents, outside agencies and staff within Volunteers of America of Western New York, Inc. guidelines
Attend staff meetings and trainings as assigned

Job Description
OVERVIEW: The Center for Youth's multiple residential programs include Emergency Shelter for youth ages 12-17, Crisis Nurseries for children under 14, and Transitional Living Programs for youth and young adults ages 16-24. All provide emergency and independent living supports and services to runaway and homeless youth (RHY) 7 days a week and all year round. The Overnight RHY Resident Assistant (RA) Float position provides on-site engagement and support that is strength-based and mutually respectful. Residents are approached from an asset-based perspective so that staff can form partnerships that help identify issues, concerns, and needs and then the strategies required to address them. The team's ultimate goal is to provide emergency and transitional care and support to families in crisis and homeless youth in a safe, respectful environment and to work with them to resolve the issues that led to their homelessness so that they can ultimately secure and maintain a stable living environment. The Overnight RHY RA Float position works out of the TLP Devonshire Apartment program, where it provides support and coverage at the other residential sites as needed. This includes transporting youth from the emergency shelter to school when needed. This is a part-time position, Thursday-Saturday, 10:00 pm - 8:00 am, 28.5 hours per week.

The Center delivers programs and services to youth and families across Monroe County who represent many racial, cultural and geographic groups. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The Arnett House is a three-story residence and candidates must be autonomously mobile and able to work anywhere within the facility. Candidates must be able to participate in the maintenance of the facility and grounds and be able to operate agency vehicles.
QUALIFICATIONS:
A Bachelor's degree in a Human Services related field or an equivalent combination of education and 2 years of experience is recommended.

Responsibilities
A. DIRECT SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide teaching, supervision, and support to residents in areas of independent living.
Observe, monitor, and document resident behaviors as well as their progress in accordance with agency standards.
Assist in the preparation of nutritious meals, including food preparation when needed.
Assist in the implementation and supervision of recreational activities.
Complete household chores assigned by supervisor to maintain cleanliness and safety standards.
Supervise and document resident medications in accordance with agency policies.
Perform any other duties necessary for the effective and efficient operation of the community residence.
B. ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required by supervisor and work as a member of the residential team for each resident. Give relevant input for treatment team meetings, staff meetings, utilization reviews, and any other meetings.
2. Observe all safety rules and regulations for self and others.
Qualifications
Education: High School Diploma
Experience: Human services experience preferred
Other: Driving record that meets agency's Clean Driving Record Policy.
Work Environment
All per diem positions are required to work at least 4 shifts per month.
