PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy equipment and perform manual work functions associated with transportation of materials and construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads, bridges, and drainage systems.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Operates a variety of heavy equipment, machinery and tools used in construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads, bridges, and drainage systems (which may include a compactor, front-end loading truck, motor grader, bulldozer, scraper, asphalt spreader); operates all other equipment, machinery, and tools as assigned.
Performs manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads, bridges, and drainage systems (which may include constructing/repairing bridges; building/repairing roads; patching holes; rolling/packing asphalt; moving soil/earth; grading roads, shoulders, or other areas; digging holes or trenches; installing pipe; shoveling asphalt, road mix, rock, dirt, etc.; trimming and clearing shrubbery; removing trees and tree limbs; removing debris from ditches and right-of-ways; hauling materials; or loading and unloading trucks).
Transports, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects.
Monitors equipment gauges and other indicators for non-standard conditions; reports faulty equipment for repair; performs basic equipment repairs.
Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment/machinery in good working condition (which includes inspecting equipment, checking condition of tires, checking/replacing fluid levels, greasing equipment, and washing/cleaning equipment).
Cleans/maintains grounds and buildings of county facilities as needed; cleans/maintains areas around compactors and trash receptacles.
Prepares and/or receives various forms, logs, reports or other documents; processes and forwards as appropriate.
Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service.
Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
May supervise activities of inmates on assigned work details.
May provide direction and training to other staff as assigned.
Conducts various errands as assigned (e.g., pick up parts or supplies).
Performs other related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of operating and servicing trucks and heavy construction equipment; knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; knowledge of departmental functions, organization, and policies; knowledge of basic equipment and vehicle maintenance practices and procedures; and knowledge of the security procedures associated with supervising inmate work details.
Skill in operating a variety of trucks and small, medium, and heavy construction equipment; skill in driving; and skill in performing basic equipment and vehicle maintenance tasks.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Completion of tenth grade level education required; one year of experience in operating heavy equipment and performing manual labor, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia Driver's License. Required to possess and maintain a valid Georgia Commercial Driver's License.

Under general supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor, employee is responsible for the collection and transportation of solid waste collected from assigned routes within the areas of the City of Weslaco; with the use of heavy equipment such as a side/front-end and/or Rolloff Truck, in connection with the City's Trash Pick-up Program. Performs routine maintenance on equipment before operating such as lubricating, fueling, and cleaning. Employee is required to perform all similar or related duties. Essential Job Functions
Operates heavy equipment to transport large quantities of solid refuse collected throughout assigned trash pickup route to ensure safe and clean residential and commercial areas free from garbage.
Travels to and from the landfill to dispose of waste materials.
Maintains records of work performed for supervisor such as vehicle check list and repair reports.
Report unusual sanitation issues such as disposal of unacceptable items, illegal dumping, etc.
Maintains and inspects assigned vehicle and performs safety checks daily to include washing assigned sanitation truck.

Maneuvers heavy equipment and operates complex mechanisms involving digging, moving earth and materials, grading, loading, and performing similar tasks in order to advance projects relating to construction and maintenance of County roads, grounds, property, utilities, right-of-ways, and other infrastructure; equipment is primarily driven and operated on-site, but does require some driving over public roads; maneuvers in and around traffic, crew workers, equipment, utilities, and other obstacles; obeys all traffic laws and safety guidelines; and monitors immediate environment and work area to ensure the safety of operator, other workers, the equipment, and the public.
Operates excavator, track hoe, and backhoe to perform skilled digging and trenching for maintenance, upkeep, and construction projects for public utilities and other infrastructure, where exacting tolerances and specification are required; and controls placement of equipment and determines optimum approach to each digging scenario in order to minimize destruction of property and avoid electric, water, sewer, and other public utility lines.
Operates a track or rubber-tired loader with large volume and weight capacities to load materials into trucks or move them over short distances; positions equipment and controls height, angle, and position of scoop for optimum delivery of payload; and controls amount and weight of materials being lifted to avoid exceeding equipment capacity. Operates and maintains diesel powered E-Z-Pack hydraulic unloading mechanisms.
Operates motor-grader, scraper, and excavator with blade attachment to set gradients for large construction and maintenance projects such as roads, landscaping, embankments, and other projects requiring exacting specifications related to slope, angle, and pitch; determines appropriate settings and adjusts blades for height, angle, and pitch to achieve desired outcome; and maneuvers equipment and operates mechanisms to skillfully set gradient, smooth surfaces, and spread materials.
Operates grappler, bulldozer, scraper, compactor, and off road trucks to move earth, gravel, sand, and other materials for large construction and maintenance projects and landfill operations; and operates mechanisms to establish rough grades or to smooth and compact surfaces in preparation for pavement, construction, or other work.
Drives large tractor-trailer rigs and low-boys to transport solid waste between transfer stations and the landfill or to move construction equipment to and from job sites; positions vehicle to allow for the most efficient and effective loading or unloading of equipment and materials; and secures all doors, gates, and fasteners to prevent spillage or loss of load.
Inspects and prepares equipment for safe and proper operation prior to beginning work for the day; performs light maintenance on equipment, which includes changing oil, refueling, and refilling lubricants; cleans vehicles, beds, and mounted equipment upon completion of assignments; and secures vehicle after use.
Transports, loads and unloads various materials and equipment used in projects.
Utilizes safety equipment and wears protective gear; monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; monitors traffic conditions surrounding trucks/equipment to identify obstructions, pedestrians, or unsafe traffic conditions; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and reports any incidents, accidents, problems, or unusual situations.

* Track or rubber tire excavator with mounted hydraulically powered grapple,
bucket, shear, processor, hydraulic hammer or other implements/attachments
to lift, shear, process, and move materials.
* Straight or articulated rubber-tired or solid-tired tractor, equipped with front-
mounted hydraulically-powered bucket, scoop or forks, to lift and transport bulk
materials to and from storage or processing areas or equipped with a heavy
rotating broom to sweep areas clear of debris.
* Powered industrial truck equipped with lifting devices such as forklift, boom,

Job Summary: Under general supervision, drives truck and operates motorized equipment with capacity of more than 3 tons and perform various other public works and construction by performing the following duties.
