Job Description Heavy Equipment OperatorGrade 13Salary: $40,872.00 ($19.65 hr) - $44,179.20 ($21.24 hr) Supervisor: Travis McLendon - Roads Superintendent PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy equipment and perform manual work functions associated with transportation of materials and construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads, bridges, and drainage systems. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Performs manual work functions associated with construction, maintenance and repair of county landfills, roads, bridges, and drainage systems (which may include constructing/repairing bridges; building/repairing roads; patching holes; rolling/packing asphalt; moving soil/earth; grading roads, shoulders, or other areas; digging holes or trenches; installing pipe; shoveling asphalt, road mix, rock, dirt, etc.; trimming and clearing shrubbery; removing trees and tree limbs; removing debris from ditches and right-of-ways; hauling materials; or loading and unloading trucks). Transports, loads, and unloads various equipment and materials used in projects. Monitors equipment gauges and other indicators for non-standard conditions; reports faulty equipment for repair; performs basic equipment repairs. Performs general maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment/machinery in good working condition (which includes inspecting equipment, checking condition of tires, checking/replacing fluid levels, greasing equipment, and washing/cleaning equipment). Cleans/maintains grounds and buildings of county facilities as needed; cleans/maintains areas around compactors and trash receptacles. Prepares and/or receives various forms, logs, reports or other documents; processes and forwards as appropriate. Communicates via telephone and/or two-way radio; provides information; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service. Responds to routine requests for information from employees, officials, the public or other individuals. ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS May supervise activities of inmates on assigned work details. May provide direction and training to other staff as assigned. Conducts various errands as assigned (e.g., pick up parts or supplies). Performs other related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Knowledge of the principles, practices, and methods of operating and servicing trucks and heavy construction equipment; knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment; knowledge of departmental functions, organization, and policies; knowledge of basic equipment and vehicle maintenance practices and procedures; and knowledge of the security procedures associated with supervising inmate work details. Skill in operating a variety of trucks and small, medium, and heavy construction equipment; skill in driving; and skill in performing basic equipment and vehicle maintenance tasks. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Completion of tenth grade level education required; one year of experience in operating heavy equipment and performing manual labor, or a related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Job Description Under general supervision of the Sanitation Supervisor, employee is responsible for the collection and transportation of solid waste collected from assigned routes within the areas of the City of Weslaco; with the use of heavy equipment such as a side/front-end and/or Rolloff Truck, in connection with the City's Trash Pick-up Program. Base Pay: $20.86 Hourly . SUMMARY: Operates large and valuable equipment. Operates various types of heavy equipment engaged in construction, repair, or maintenance of roads and beaches. Required to attend annual sea turtle monitoring certification class and comply with the beach maintenance permit. Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and other irregular hours. The employee is required to be on duty before, during, and after natural disasters and emergencies, as directed by the supervisor. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Serves as primary operator of heavy gasoline and/or diesel equipment, such as a maintainer or a gradall, engaged in beach maintenance and operations or complex construction and repair work. Operates other equipment used in beach construction, maintenance, and repair, such as front-end loaders, tractor-mowers, trucks, street sweepers, backhoes and rollers. Checks oil, water, fuel, tires, hydraulic system, etc., and makes appropriate adjustments to be sure vehicle or equipment is in proper operating condition before leaving for job site. Performs minor repairs and cleaning of equipment. Works on roadways or beaches with minor supervision, incorporating stabilization and base requirements to produce a finished product. Patches roads with asphalt and caliche. May perform manual labor on occasion, including patching roads, cutting brush and picking up brush and debris on roads. Performs such other duties as may be assigned. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Depending on assignment, may supervise and/or direct the work of a crew on an intermittent basis. Carries out responsibilities in accordance with Nueces County organization policies and applicable laws. Nature of Work: Employees in this class are responsible for performing tasks of average difficulty involving the safe operation of large trucks on public streets and highways. Employees are also required to operate diverse, moderately complex motorized construction/maintenance equipment. Under immediate supervision, employees are required to exercise some initiative and independent judgment in completing assigned tasks. Tasks at times are performed under hazardous conditions and employees are expected to be particularly alert and careful whenever operating the assigned vehicle/equipment. Employees might be required to perform manual and unskilled laboring tasks, using hand and power tools, either separate from or in conjunction with the equipment being operated. Employees might also be required to operate specialty and/or more complex construction/maintenance equipment on a relief basis or in a training capacity and may serve in a lead capacity over lower level laboring personnel. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion by observation and through results obtained. Minimum Requirements: Graduation from an accredited high school, vocational school or G.E.D; equivalency diploma. Considerable paid experience in operating heavy trucks and Public Works construction/maintenance equipment; including some medium equipment operators training (ie., bobcat, trencher, graders, backhoe and front end loaders.) Possessions of a valid Florida Class 'B' Commercial Driver's License with good driving record. TRAINEES ONLY: One (1) year full time (or equivalent) paid experience in the operation of trucks and light or heavy motorized maintenance equipment ( ie., bobcat, trencher, graders and backhoe). Must obtain a Class 'B' Commercial Driver's License within six (6) months of hire. Preferred Qualifications: Two (2) experience in operating heavy trucks and Public Works construction/maintenance equipment; including some medium equipment operators training (i.e., bobcat, trencher, graders, backhoe and front end loaders.)
