Responsibilities

COMPETENCY : Will achieve and maintain advanced level clinical skills necessary to transport critical patients.

Delivers age appropriate care to pediatric patients, (24 weeks gestation to 18 years), during the transport process.

Responsible to remain current on transport policies and procedures, department changes, education, and current research.

Meets all performance standards for care of critical neonates and pediatric patients.

Works collaboratively with transport nurse in providing patient care therapies for children being transported by the transport team with exception of the administration of IV medications. Able to calculate, and check medication administration with RN. Able to identify medication errors.

Proficient in IV starts on Peds and Infants, endotracheal Intubation, needle thoracentesis of the chest, and surfactant administration.

Assists with patient care in the NICU and PICU while functioning as a respiratory care practitioner and maintaining transport readiness.

Education:

For employees hired on/after January 16, 2011, minimum of an Associate degree in Respiratory Therapy from a program accredited by the Committee on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (COARC) or accredited by the American Medical Association's Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation (CAHEA).

Experience:

Three years of neonatal and/or pediatric intensive care clinical experience within the last five years. Experience in Neonatal and /or Pediatric transport preferred.

To provide basic and advanced respiratory care to all patient populations to include pediatric, neonate ,and adults in the form of diagnostic modalities, pulmonary disease prevention, application of invasive and noninvasive therapeutic modalities and patient assessment and facilitation of appropriate care, and specializing in critical care. Essential Functions

+ Meets patient's goals and needs and provides quality care by conducting pulmonary function tests; assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results; determining respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and by prescription.

+ Helps patient accomplish treatment plan and supports life by administering inhalants; operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators

+ Administers respiratory therapy treatments by performing bronchopulmonary drainage; assisting with breathing exercises; monitoring physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes.

+ Evaluates effects of respiratory therapy treatment plan by observing, noting, and evaluating patient's progress; recommending adjustments and modifications.

+ Assures continuation of therapeutic plan following discharge by instructing patients, families, and caregivers in home care; recommending and/or providing assistive equipment

+ Provide Respiratory support for Internal and External patient transport as needed under the direction of a physician.

Responsible and accountable for the respiratory management, treatment, control and care of patients with respiratory deficiencies.
Respiratory therapist must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients.
The individual must exhibit knowledge of the principles of growth and development from newborn to geriatric patient population.
Therapist must possess the ability to assess data reflective of patient status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify patient's requirements relative to their age-specific needs.
Therapist must be able to provide the care indicated with respect to department policy and procedures.
With consideration to age, employee utilizes the approved process to resolve biophysical, psychological educational, and environmental needs of the patient/significant other when administering care.


Required Skills

Required Experience

Competent to assess the appropriate care given to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, or geriatric patient.
Maintain Adult ACLS, BLS (AHA), NRP and Pediatric (PALS) certification required.
If ACLS and PALS card are not present at hire, the employee will obtain within six months of hire.

Two years experience preferred.
