Job Description:
Consistently performs and documents thorough patient assessments.
Establishes appropriate care plans.
Communicates with other members of the patient care team.
Correctly performs and documents routine therapeutic modalities including aerosolized medications, secretion management techniques, pulmonary volume expansion, oxygen therapy, and assists with routine care and maintenance of artificial airways.
Initiates and manages conventional and high frequency mechanical ventilators according to established protocol.

Assists in intra-hospital transport of mechanically ventilated patients.
Responsible for acute airway management in emergent situations.

Job Summary:
The Respiratory Care Practitioner I is responsible for providing respiratory care through patient assessment, planning, intervention, education, and evaluation. Performs all respiratory care procedures including but not limited to oxygen and aerosolized medication delivery, ventilator care, bronchial hygiene therapy, diagnostic services and patient and staff education. Monitors the patient's response to such therapies and makes recommendations to change or modify based on the assessment.
Essential Functions:
* May serve as a preceptor to new team members and/or students.
* Assesses patient's physical status by inspection, palpation, auscultation, percussion, patient behavior and reviewing existing data in patient's record.
* Performs treatments according to physician orders, explains therapy and therapeutic goals to patient; modifies treatment procedures based on patient response.
* Determines appropriateness of prescribed therapy and recommends methods to physician to achieve therapeutic goals including IPPB, Aerosol therapy, Postural drainage and percussion, ultrasonic nebulizer, incentive spirometry, metered dose inhalers and spacers, etc.
* Sets up and maintains different modes of oxygen therapy, to maintain adequate PaO2's with accurate inspired levels of oxygen.
* Administers intermittent positive pressure breathing (IPPB) or Aerosol Therapy by first preparing the prescribed medication ordered by the physician and adjusting the machine or device to accomplish patient's individual clinical needs; document and observe patient's vital signs, productivity of cough, relief of Dyspnea, improved breath sounds and any adverse reactions to therapy; and use judgement and technical skill to determine possible adverse reactions and suggestions for appropriateness of therapy.
* Gives postural drainage, vibration, percussion to ensure proper drainage of bronchial secretions by use of manual or mechanical percussion; check orders and X-rays for segments to be treated prior to initiating treatment; auscultation prior to and after procedure to note presence of clearance of secretions and response to therapy.
* Instructs patients and families in incentive spirometer, metered dose inhaler (MDI) administration, postural drainage and clapping, oxygen therapy, ventilator care and home aerosol therapy.
* May assist doctor with bronchoscopy and tracheostomy; assists with tracheostomy endotracheal tube changes; ensures proper humidification.
* Procurement of sputum for culture and sensitivity or airway clearance either by patient coaching, administration of mucolytics, aerosol therapy or endotracheal / nasopharyngeal suctioning.
* Evaluates normal and pathologic blood and urine laboratory value ranges.
* Performs arterial punctures and analysis; has an in-depth knowledge of analysis and arterial blood gas (ABG) interpretation. Performs arterial line procedures, takes safety precautions, sterile procedure, flushing, and ABG aspirations.
* May perform EKG's; understands electronic monitoring, lead placement, and basic arrhythmias.
* Maintains all Respiratory Therapy equipment and supplies.
* Responds to cardio-pulmonary resuscitations and actively participates as indicated by clinical circumstances.

Compensation Range

The Registered Respiratory Therapist provides respiratory pharmacologic, diagnostic, and therapeutic modalities to all age groups. The practitioner provides direct patient care and works collaboratively with other team members, the physician, and the patient/family to achieve optimal outcomes. This position acts as a liaison with other clinical departments. The individual provides clinical leadership throughout the system. The incumbent has access to confidential patient information and makes decisions independently and in collaboration with other team members, directors and physicians. The Registered Respiratory Therapist works under the indirect supervision of the Respiratory Care Supervisor.
Duties/Responsibilities
Carries out physician orders according to protocols, best practices, and respiratory care policies.
Accurate and timely completion of patient assessment involving the evaluation of cardiopulmonary function and treatment effectiveness, and patient/family education to contribute to the development and ongoing evaluation of a multidisciplinary plan of care.
Accurate and timely documentation/recording and communication of patient assessment findings, treatment effectiveness and outcomes.
Effective management and evaluation of critical/hazardous procedures in collaboration with other licensed health care professionals.
Accurately performs diagnostic procedures and cardiac monitoring with recognition of arrhythmias.
Accurately administers medications for the testing or treatment of cardiopulmonary impairment.
Assists with new employee orientation and annual competency skills evaluations.
Takes an active department leadership role in Quality Improvement Processes.
Minimum/Required Qualifications
Associate Degree with a concentration in Respiratory Therapy
Licensed by the Ohio Respiratory Care Board and Registered by the (NBRC) National Board for Respiratory Care
ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support
PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support and NRP Neonatal Resuscitation Program Completed
Electrocardiogram (ECG) interpretation program completion required.
Preferred Qualifications
American Medical Association (AMA) approved associate degree program for Respiratory Therapy.
Minimum of 2 years of experience in critical care, emergency and diagnostic respiratory care procedures.

Our Respiratory Therapists evaluate and treat patients with breathing disorders in accordance with hospital, state, professional and federal regulations and guidelines. This individual assumes primary responsibility for all respiratory care treatments while integrating company values into daily practice.
Job Duties include, but are not limited to:
Assesses patient's condition using professional judgment and in conference with patient's physician. Evaluates appropriateness of therapy specifically in the treatment patients. Performs medically prescribed respiratory care procedures in accordance with physician's orders. Requests re-order when necessary and communicates with nurse and physician about discrepancies and concerns.
Stands by and assists during special procedures and responds to critical situation.
Maintains and cleans/sterilizes equipment and work area as required. Reports all malfunctions or breakage appropriately. Performs setup, maintenance and removal of equipment from patient care areas.
Communicates appropriate information to patient and family concerning respiratory care procedures and equipment maintenance as needed.
Documents all procedures and patient education performed on all patients, and communicates to nursing, physicians, and other applicable staff. Actively participates in patient rounds and team conferences. Receives pertinent information concerning assigned patients and effectively communicates all relevant information to the oncoming shift.
May be required to work during inclement weather and other staffing emergencies.
Requirements for consideration:
Current state licensure as a Respiratory Therapist required.
Minimum of one year experience as a Respiratory Care Ptractioner is required. Experience in an acute care setting is preferred
Current CPR Certification is required.
