POSITION DUTIES Maintain a safe environment and keep students under direct supervision at all times; Communicates with students to discuss their problems and offer them guidance, and serves as a mentor and role model for their assimilation into the deaf culture; Monitors students and assists them in complying with daily and weekly schedules of completing homework, sleeping, eating, and performing personal hygiene; Observes and interacts with students to prevent conflicts and minimize disturbances; Under the direction of the supervisor, devises and dispenses rewards and punishments within specified guidelines to ensure students comply with Maryland School for the Deaf rules and policies; Documents and reports student problems to the RCYCP Supervisor; May supplement classroom instruction by tutoring students in academic subjects; Maintain strict confidentiality of students and school personnel information; Performs other related duties. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Must be either 21 years old with graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate. OR At least 18 years old with possession of an Associate of Arts degree or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university. Experience: One year of experience providing guidance to deaf and hard of hearing youth and assisting them with everyday life skills in a student life setting. Note: Candidates may substitute additional education from an accredited college or university at the rate of sixty credit hours for the required experience. DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of the physical, emotional and social aspects of deafness; Skill in American Sign Language sufficient to permit fluent and accurate communication with students and parents; Skill in written English sufficient to permit fluent and accurate communication with students and parents who are not proficient in American Sign Language; Ability to learn emergency medical procedures; Ability to maintain a dormitory environment conducive to positive student development; Ability to work harmoniously with students and with other employees. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS 1. Employees in this classification will be required to obtain and maintain RCYCP certification. 2. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland. 3. Employees in this classification will be trained in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first-aid training leading to certification. These certifications must be kept current as a requirement of residential childcare licensure by the Maryland Department of Human Services. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS 1. Consistently and accurately document in the patient medical records patient assessment with clinical parameters such as, breath sounds, tracheostomy tube data, sputum production, ventilator settings based on physician orders, weaning and tolerance, in compliance with department daily documentation records. Provide the in-coming shift with room-to-room walking detailed, verbal report on the patient condition, any change in orders and tolerance to care provided. Consistently and accurately provide information regarding Spo2, Fio2, SVT, RR, sputum production, breath sounds, mode of therapy, medication administration and tolerance, among others. For patients on ventilatory support, latest ventilator settings, tolerance to weaning and Fio2 titration. Perform diagnostic procedures in accordance with physician orders such as, sputum collection and arterial blood gases following B.R.C. safety standards and department policy and procedure. Perform physician rounds when they are in the facility and update orders accordingly in the respiratory care daily assignment record. Always maintain equipment and supply room clean and organized. When bulk supplies are in the equipment and supply room, remove supplies from packaging and properly place them on the shelves for easy access. No beverages and/or food consumption is allowed in the equipment and supply room. When patients are transferred or discharged from the unit, immediately remove all equipment from the patient room and proceed to clean, disinfect and placed in the appropriate clean area for easy access. When patients are transferred or discharged from the unit or you are changing supplies according to the department change-out policy and procedure, discard all soiled disposable supplies in a RED biohazard bag. Only soiled, disposable supplies are to be disposed of in the red biohazard bags. Biohazard bags are ONLY to be disposed of in the dirty soiled utility room. All other trash is to be placed in a clear, bag-lined trash receptacle. At all times, follow universal precautions according to CDC guidelines and the facility infection control policy and procedures to comply with regulatory and safety standards for the protection of self and other employees and patients. Physical and Sensory Requirements: Moderate physical activity: Requires handling of average-weight objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds. Standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.
