Job Summary
Staff Respiratory Therapist, 36hr Day shift
Respiratory therapists treat, evaluate, monitor, and manage patients with breathing disorders or cardiovascular problems.
Care provided by respiratory therapists may include administration of oxygen, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, chest physical therapy, management of mechanical ventilators, administering drugs to the lungs, monitoring cardiopulmonary systems, and measuring lung function.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Determines respiratory treatment goals in consultation with physicians, nurses, and by prescription
2. Delivers and assesses responses to ordered therapy to be sure it is restoring the patient's pulmonary function.
3. Administers prescribed doses of aerosol drugs
4. Utilizes various types of oxygen and other therapeutic gas equipment such as masks, BIPAP/CPAP, ventilators per hospital policy
5. Administers Respiratory Therapy by performing various techniques of bronchopulmonary drainage, such as percussion/vibration, Acapella, incentive spirometry
6. Monitors physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes
7. Educate patients and family members on a variety of topics such as correct MDI or aerosol use, smoking cessation, and other respiratory equipment
8. Assists in educating students
9. Ability to perform arterial blood gas puncture
10. Respond to Code Blue, stat calls, and be a member of RRT (Rapid Response Team)
11. Assist with endotracheal intubation
12. Extubate patients per order
13. Maintain the integrity of the patient-ventilator system by proper airway management, measure ventilator volumes and pressures, and obtain ventilator mechanics (RSBI, Raw, spontaneous RR and minute volume, NIF)
14. Be an active critical care team member in meeting patients' goals by attending rounds, giving pertinent patient information, and offering suggestions.
15. Be a team player both on the floor and in the ICU to meet the best patient goals and needs
16. Assist and direct treatments given by CRTs and those with limited licenses.
17. Assist with the orientation of new employees
18. Monitors, records, and communicates patient condition and general treatment acceptance.

Current Massachusetts Board of Respiratory Care license

Current BLS certification

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Respiratory therapists are on their feet walking and working the majority of the time. They push ventilators which are on wheels to different locations. They perform chest physical therapy on patients and assist during CPR, sometimes performing cardiac compressions. Therapists typically work three 12-hour shifts and take turns covering weekends and holidays.

Job Summary
GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Provides professional Respiratory Care including initiation and maintenance of mechanical ventilation, assist with insertion, stabilization and maintenance of artificial airways, and administration of Respiratory Care modalities. Uses professional judgment regarding appropriateness of therapy and modifies treatment and/or notifies physicians with recommendations for change. Administers appropriate tests and procedures as ordered to evaluate appropriateness of therapy including pulse oximetry, pulmonary mechanics, pulmonary function testing, airway clearance techniques, and alveolar gas measurements.
2. Responds to respiratory emergencies (including cardiopulmonary resuscitations), establishes and maintains patient airway. Transports and maintains mechanically ventilated patients.
3. Assesses patient condition based on medical history, patient observation and examination, physician's diagnosis, laboratory findings, specific respiratory tests and procedures. Uses professional judgment to work collaboratively with the care team.
4. Assists and instructs respiratory technicians and students in performance of respiratory care procedures.
5. Makes regular rounds and administers respiratory care modalities to assigned patients. Observes and evaluates patients' conditions, progress, and responses to treatment. Collaboratively contributes to care plan accordingly.
6. Completes necessary documentation of all pertinent observations related to patient care, treatment administered, patient's response to treatment, and reports to Respiratory Care Clinical Supervisor and physicians.
7. Participates in education of students, physicians, and staff. Clinically supervises respiratory therapy students in patient areas. Explains and demonstrates respiratory techniques to other members of the care team.

8. Inspects, tests, cleans, and maintains respiratory therapy equipment as per department policy.
9. Demonstrates and instructs respiratory care procedures to new staff, other healthcare personnel, patients, and patient's families.
10. Provides clinical and general guidance to new, agency, per-diem, and student therapy personnel.
11. Provides direct supervision for respiratory therapy students.
12. Sets up and operates devices such as basic oxygen therapy, mechanical ventilators, CPAP/Bi-level support, NIPPV, high flow oxygen therapy in accordance with department policy and procedures.
13. Maintains all necessary patient and department records on the electronic medical record and medical administration record. Follows hospital policy/procedure regarding patient medication administration.
14. Participates in departmental quality assurance programs.
15. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of current techniques, developments, and issues in respiratory care through attendance at educational meetings, lectures, and conferences.
16. Provides verbal reports including diagnosis, significant past medical history, reason(s) for admission, treatment goals and plans, patient's response to treatment, and suggestions to optimize patient's treatment plan.
17. Sets up and operates devices such as a body plethysmograph in accordance with department policy and procedures.

The Massachusetts General Hospital Respiratory Care Department is a world-renowned leader within the field of respiratory care. The respiratory therapists function as clinical consultants and are primarily focused on providing extensive respiratory care practices throughout the institution. They provide all aspects of mechanical ventilation including NPPV and HFOV, as well as the monitoring and managing of patients with various artificial airways. Clinical assignments include adult, pediatric and neonatal ICU's, the Acute Respiratory Care Ventilator Unit, the Emergency/Trauma Room and general care areas.
The MGH respiratory therapists administer nitric oxide, Heliox, aerosolized antibiotics, assist with bronchoscopies, and percutaneous tracheostomy insertions and are members of the Rapid Response, Code and Trauma Teams. The neonatal/pediatric respiratory therapists administer surfactant, respond to high-risk deliveries and perform endotracheal intubations. The ECMO respiratory therapists initiate, manage and wean both adult and neonatal/pediatric ECMO cases. Our staff members are actively involved in clinical research projects.
Comprehensive 12-week new employee orientation with preceptors, classes & equipment labs. The department offers ongoing in-service education programs with advanced training in pediatric and neonatal critical care, as well as Extra-Corporeal Life Support (ECMO).
Qualified candidates must be graduates of an Co ARC approved respiratory care program with a minimum of an Associate's degree - Bachelor's Degree is preferred. They must have a valid MA respiratory care license in good standing. Candidates must be registered respiratory therapists (RRT) through the NBRC. New graduates will have 6-months from hire date to become registered. All candidates must be certified in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS).

Job Purpose
This position is responsible for delivering, setting up, and maintaining specialized respiratory and other equipment when necessary.
Duties and Responsibilities
Provide telehealth instruction to patients and/or caregivers on the proper use of certain equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Provide onsite instruction to patients and/or caregivers as needed on the proper use of certain equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Provide virtual follow-ups for patients and/or caregivers on the proper use of certain equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Perform on site follow-ups on patients when appropriate.
Prepare and maintain a record for each patient containing all pertinent information, care plans, physician prescriptions and follow-up documentation.
Consult with referring physician when appropriate regarding patient treatment, medical condition, and Plan of Care.
Participate in ongoing education and training sessions regarding respiratory patient care.
Interview and examine patients with breathing or cardiopulmonary disorders as indicated by their individual care plan.
Monitor physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs as indicated.
Provide education to patients with oxygen, CPAP, BIPAP, and other respiratory equipment for complex respiratory diagnoses (excluding ventilators)

Suction
Perform testing and preventive maintenance on respiratory equipment in patients' residence.
Instruct patients, caregivers, physicians, and physicians' staff on the proper use of respiratory equipment and necessary cleaning requirements.
Serve as liaison between patient and other members of the health care team when required.
Consult with physicians to develop patient treatment plans.
Deliver/pick up equipment and/or supplies to patients' homes as necessary.
Contact physician and/or necessary health care team member regarding orders, complications and recommendations. Evaluate respiratory equipment for home use.
Participate in mandatory in-services and other trainings as scheduled.
Keep all financial and patient information confidential, in accordance with company mandate and HIPAA security standards.
Complete patient files and paperwork as per current policies.
Regular rotation for on-call services with expectation of answering any on-call within 15 minutes or less and responding physically to emergencies within the assigned service area as quickly as possible.
Basic Qualifications
21 years of age or older
Must be eligible to work in the United States and not require work authorization from us now or in the future
Valid US driver's license with no more than 2 moving violations or at fault accidents within the last 3 years
Graduate of a Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC)-accredited respiratory therapy degree program with associate degree (AS, AAS) or a bachelor's degree (BS) and appropriate licensure.
Must be currently licensed and in good standing with the Licensure Board of Registration of the state of practice
Must possess RRT, RCP, CRTT credentials
Valid state (s) Respiratory Care license

- Provides a variety of Respiratory Care Services to Dana Farber Cancer Institute main campus (Boston) and Chestnut Hill campus
- Applies scientific principles for the identification, prevention, and remediation of pulmonary and cardiopulmonary dysfunction
