Job Description
Working under general supervision with approved protocols or under the order of a licensed independent provider (LIP), the Respiratory Care Practitioner II (Registered) executes assignments demonstrating a clinical competence in Respiratory Care in the selection of accurate technical factors on an individual patient basis necessary to evaluate and provide age appropriate treatment across all patient types in all locations to include cardiopulmonary dysfunction secondary to developmental defects, the aging process, physical injury or disease requiring the administration of inhaled medications, utilization of specialized ventilation equipment and performing a variety of respiratory care techniques. Adheres to all department and facility policies and procedures.
Manages an assigned case load and responds to emergent patient needs. Functions as part of a larger team to support all patients under the department's care.

Performs a variety of respiratory care treatments to specific patient populations, i.e., adult, pediatric, or neonatal. Verifies all interventions are supported by protocol or LIP order. Observes and monitors physical signs and symptoms, general behavior, general physical response to respiratory care procedures. Collaborates with LIP during patient rounds the therapeutic treatment plans to determine whether initiation, modification, or discontinuation of the treatment regimen is warranted. Adheres to Joint Commission, State, Federal, organizational and departmental regulatory compliance standards.
Administers therapeutic and diagnostic gases (exclusive of anesthetic agents), aerosolized medication treatments and chest physiotherapy. Administers invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation and adjusts ventilation equipment to optimize patient support. Ensures correct ventilator alarms and settings. Collaborates with the healthcare team when adjusting ventilation parameters and settings, as necessary in accordance with patient's response. Evaluates the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions by reviewing chest x-rays, utilizing noninvasive monitor values and laboratory results. Monitors patient appearance and vital signs and consults with the LIP or a senior practitioner as necessary

Consistently and accurately document in the patient medical records patient assessment with clinical parameters such as, breath sounds, tracheostomy tube data, sputum production, ventilator settings based on physician orders, weaning and tolerance, in compliance with department daily documentation records.
Provide the in-coming shift with room-to-room walking detailed, verbal report on the patient condition, any change in orders and tolerance to care provided. Consistently and accurately provide information regarding Spo2, Fio2, SVT, RR, sputum production, breath sounds, mode of therapy, medication administration and tolerance, among others. For patients on ventilatory support, latest ventilator settings, tolerance to weaning and Fio2 titration.
Perform diagnostic procedures in accordance with physician orders such as, sputum collection and arterial blood gases following B.R.C. safety standards and department policy and procedure.
Perform physician rounds when they are in the facility and update orders accordingly in the respiratory care daily assignment record.
Always maintain equipment and supply room clean and organized. When bulk supplies are in the equipment and supply room, remove supplies from packaging and properly place them on the shelves for easy access. No beverages and/or food consumption is allowed in the equipment and supply room.
When patients are transferred or discharged from the unit, immediately remove all equipment from the patient room and proceed to clean, disinfect and placed in the appropriate clean area for easy access. When patients are transferred or discharged from the unit or you are changing supplies according to the department change-out policy and procedure, discard all soiled disposable supplies in a RED biohazard bag. Only soiled, disposable supplies are to be disposed of in the red biohazard bags. Biohazard bags are ONLY to be disposed of in the dirty soiled utility room. All other trash is to be placed in a clear, bag-lined trash receptacle.
At all times, follow universal precautions according to CDC guidelines and the facility infection control policy and procedures to comply with regulatory and safety standards for the protection of self and other employees and patients.

Position Summary:Under general direction of the department manager, according to departmental and hospital standards, the Respiratory Care Practitioner, referred to as RCP-II, is responsible for administering all levels of Respiratory Care to treat patients with cardiopulmonary dysfunction and/or disabilities.
RCP-II will function to the level that is usual and customary for Acute Care, ER, and Critical Care (either PICU or NICU) competency and orientation.
The RCP-II will maintain all skills and knowledge sufficient to provide safe, effective, and appropriate care to all ages of patients including neonates, infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, and adults.
Qualifications Minimum EducationAssociate's Degree Completion of a minimum two years of college training in an AMA approved Respiratory Care Program.

Administers all general Respiratory Therapy procedures, including humidity and aerosol therapy, lung inflation maneuvers, pulmonary secretion clearance, CP AP, BIP AP, and High-Flow Therapy.
Must demonstrate intermediate mechanical ventilator management skills including use of Nitric Oxide, Heliox, and set-up and management of HFOV.
Performs CPR as indicated.
Performs invasive and noninvasive monitoring and diagnostic procedures ascribed to specific care areas.
Works independently within the ER, Acute Care, and PICU and/or NICU; a minimum of 10 shifts a year in each area.
Must display sustained proficiency in these care areas as exhibited through department rotation schedule.
Adheres to policies and procedures established by Respiratory Care Services and Children's National Health System.
Ability to organize, establish priorities, and to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Must be able to perform under stressful situations using good clinical judgment.
Must demonstrate compassion and patient centered orientation when dealing with patients, families, and co-workers.
Must have ability to perform mathematical calculations.
Must maintain clinical skills and required continuing education credits for department and licensure including: BLS, P ALS, FIT Testing, annual skills review, in-services, etc.
Must have physical ability to perform all treatment modalities.
Must have physical ability to move and lift up to 50lbs; frequently endure long periods of standing and walking.
Must have basic computer skills.
Credentials and proficiency will be assessed during annual review to maintain status at the RCP-II Level.

Who Should Apply:

Salary Range: Minimum 28.29 per hour - Maximum 49.79 per hour. Compensation will be commensurate with equity and experience for roles of similar scope and responsibility.

Verifies all interventions are supported by protocol or LIP order. Observes and monitors physical signs and symptoms, general behavior, general physical response to respiratory care procedures. Collaborates with LIP during patient rounds the therapeutic treatment plans to determine whether initiation, modification, or discontinuation of the treatment regimen is warranted. Adheres to Joint Commission, State, Federal, organizational and departmental regulatory compliance standards.
Administers therapeutic and diagnostic gases (exclusive of anesthetic agents), aerosolized medication treatments and chest physiotherapy. Administers invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation and adjusts ventilation equipment to optimize patient support. Ensures correct ventilator alarms and settings. Collaborates with the healthcare team when adjusting ventilation parameters and settings, as necessary in accordance with patient's response. Evaluates the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions by reviewing chest x-rays, utilizing noninvasive monitor values and laboratory results. Monitors patient appearance and vital signs and consults with the LIP or a senior practitioner as necessary
Documents accurate patient care activity in various electronic health records systems
Contributes to departmental and organizational performance improvement initiatives and efforts to improve workflows, patient experience and quality. Participates in student and employee training and education activities.

Job Responsibilities:
