This position will support the US Department of Veterans Affairs Critical Staffing Program. The person in this position will represent International SOS Government Medical Services, Inc. and provide services outlined below:
International SOS Government Medical Services, Inc. is looking for an individual who is an experienced Respiratory Therapist to treat, evaluate, and care for patients with breathing and cardiopulmonary disorders, implementing therapeutic techniques and manage respiratory equipment. They pray critical role in improving patients' respiratory health and quality of life through both acute and chronic care interventions.
Key Responsibilities:
Performs testing that measures sleep cycles and stages of sleep, monitors, and records the following elements: sleep patterns and stages, blood oxygen levels, body position, brain waves (EEG), breathing rate, electrical activity of muscles, eye movements, leg movements, heart rate.
Collaborate with specialists in Pulmonary, Emergency Room (ER), and Intensive Care Units (ICU) in various aspects of clinical care of patients.
Initiate and manage life support for people in ICUs and emergency departments.
Stabilize and monitor high risk patients being moved from hospital to hospital by ambulance.
Administer inhaled drugs and medical gases such as mucolytics, bronchodilators, oxygen, and nitric oxide.
Shall be competent in the following tasks:
Therapeutic and diagnostic procedures with the use of medical gases and administration devices including oxygen and nitric oxide.
All forms of humidification use with the appropriate devices, including aerosols and high flow systems.
Administration of inhaled medications, with use of appropriate devices, to the cardiopulmonary system.
Assist with intubation.
Use of all ventilators in VAGLAHS and all modes of mechanical ventilation.
Chest Physiotherapy (CPT), both manual and with the Vest System, and postural drainage.

The use of “split-night” diagnostic/therapeutics studies as described: perform polysomnogram during the first part of the night and then CPAP titration study during the 2nd half of the night if initial part of the study is consistent with obstructive sleep apnea.
Perform full night polysomnogram.
Sleep staging, defined as continuous recording of at least one (1) channel of Electroencephalogram (EEG), two (2) channels of Electrooculography (EOG) and one (1) channel of Electromyography (EMG) recording, following the rules of staging systematized by A. Rechstcahffen and A. Kales.
Continuous recording of four (4) or more additional parameters of sleep, including at least airflow, oximetry, Electrocardiogram (EKG), and EMG.
Continuous attendance as a technologist, working under the direction of the Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and Chief of Respiratory Therapy, who reports to Chief of Pulmonary and Critical Care.
Maintain a technical log, manually and electronically of patient information including nocturnal patient activity, position and events.
Perform electronic and manual scoring.
Follow written policies, procedures and guidelines defining the response to findings disclosed during testing requiring medical evaluation and treatment, including the use of oxygen, and “spilt night” protocols.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements/Certifications:
Must possess a certification as a Registered Respiratory Therapist from the National Board of Respiratory Care.

Drew University of Medicine and Sciences (CDU), DHS hospitals are training sites for physicians completing their Graduate Medical Education in nearly every medical specialty and subspecialty. In addition, to its direct clinical services, DHS also runs the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Agency and the County's 911 emergency response system, as well as Housing for Health and the Office of Diversion and Re-entry, each with a critical role in connecting vulnerable populations, including those released from correctional and institutional settings, to supportive housing.

DEFINITION:
Provides basic respiratory care, including continuous ventilation, to patients with respiratory disorders or deficiencies.
* Assesses patients' overall cardiopulmonary status by inspection, palpitation, percussion, auscultation, and patient interview; documents patients' vital signs.
* Performs the basic range of ventilatory care services as prescribed by a physician including selecting, setting up, and operating a variety of devices such as medication delivery units, humidifiers, and positive-pressure breathing machines.
* Performs arterial punctures and may perform intubations and other procedures as ordered by a physician and designated according to the facility's policies and procedures.
* Administers chest physiotherapy to patients using postural drainage and/or chest wall percussion and vibration techniques by hand or by mechanical devices.
* Performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation in life threatening situations, which includes establishment of an airway by inserting an endotracheal tube, performance of chest compressions, and the application of ventilatory support.
* Monitors patients undergoing respiratory care, reporting changes in condition such as significant variations in heart beat or breathing to medical or nursing personnel, making recommendations when a change in care is indicated, and recording relevant information in the patient's chart, including effectiveness of procedures, techniques, and equipment.
* Interprets results of blood gas analyses and notifies physician when blood gas deficiencies indicate a need for a change in treatment.
* Instructs patients in various breathing techniques.
* Provides complete unit-based shift reports to staff at shift change.
* Performs equipment troubleshooting.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
OPTION I - An Associate's degree* in respiratory therapy from an accredited college.

OPTION II - A certificate* of completion of an approved two-year training program in respiratory therapy.
-OR-
OPTION III - One year of experience in the service of the County of Los Angeles as a Respiratory Care Practitioner I.
Physical Class III - Moderate: Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighting over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.
LICENSE:
A current* California State Respiratory Care Practitioner's License or an interim permit issued by the Respiratory Care Board of California.
A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
Desirable Qualifications
* Current certificateof completion in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association.
* Current certificateof completion in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) issued by the American Heart Association.
* Current certificateof completion in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) issued by the American Heart Association.

EXAMINATION CONTENT
This examination will consist of an evaluation of education, experience and desirable qualifications based on application weighted 100%.
Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be placed on the eligible register.
