Scope of Work
Applies scientific knowledge / therapy to practical clinical problems of respiratory care. As a team member in delivery of respiratory services, and under medical direction, performs a wide range of procedures related to the care of patients with general and specialized respiratory-related needs of various age groups.
Performs evaluation to determine respiratory care needs, and makes appropriate recommendations and changes in accordance with policy and protocol guidelines. Assesses effectiveness of treatment and accurately documents according to department and legal/regulatory standards. Performs point of care testing as required.
Performs advanced evaluation, management and therapeutic procedures (interventions) for patients requiring respiratory assistance. Assesses effectiveness of intervention and accurately documents according to department and legal/regulatory standards.
Completes and documents required education and competencies within designated timeframe. Maintains competency in areas of accountability.
Accurate and timely completion of all necessary documentation and billing.
Facilitates a smooth transition for the patient to appropriate referral services / the next point of service / home and provides education to patients and families as it relates to respiratory issues.
Instructs and trains other respiratory care staff, nursing and other medical personnel and students regarding patient needs and respiratory care services.

Summary
Respiratory Therapists at Mary Free Bed are key members of the multi-disciplinary team that collaborates together to provide patient-centered care. Respiratory therapist coordinate, direct, delegate, and provide care to multiple patients. Using a patient and family-centered care approach, each Respiratory Therapist develops relationships with patients, families, and colleagues that enhance the quality of care provided. Respiratory Therapy is performed with compassion and courtesy, and each Respiratory Therapist is responsible to follow departmental policies and service standards. Patient and family education is a primary focus and is a critical aspect of the interdisciplinary team's efforts to assist patients to gain independence, apply adaptation strategies, and return to home.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Provide patient care, treatment, and services within the scope of their license, certification or registration and as required by Federal and State laws and regulations.
The Respiratory Therapist is responsible for all respiratory care provided to patients at Mary Free Bed. Through careful assessment of each patient, interdisciplinary collaboration, and critical thinking, each Respiratory Therapist develops and/or follows a patient-centered plan of care that aligns with the priorities and plans developed by the attending physician and other disciplines.
Scope of services will include reviewing medical history and evaluation of patient for: Bronchodilator Care, Ventilator Care, Pulmonary Hygiene Therapy, Airway Management and Care (Tracheostomy changes , Sleep Disorder Screening), Bipap/Cpap therapy, Appropriate Oxygen and Aerosol Therapy
Discharge Education and assistance in discharge coordination for patients
Diagnostic Procedures/Testing: EKG's, Blood Gas, TCOM monitoring and downloads, Overnight pulse ox study and download, Oxygen Desaturation Study to determine home oxygen needs· Each Respiratory Therapist will participate in performance improvement through identification of ways to improve care, reporting unexpected events or medical errors, and reporting “near misses”. As requested, the Respiratory Therapist will participate in data collection and documentation audits to assist with quality improvement measures.
Each Respiratory Therapist is responsible to promote safety for all patients served by following all applicable department policies and procedures. Respiratory Therapist will understand and contribute to the initiatives that are in place to improve the safety of the patients served. Additionally, a culture of patient safety is very important at MFB and this requires all employees to be able to identify and report unexpected events and near misses without the fear of reprisal or retaliation. Retaliation or intimidation towards another employee for reporting unexpected events or near misses will not be tolerated. Finally, when threats to patient safety are identified, or opportunities for improvement are noted, these will be communicated with the Leadership Team.
Each Respiratory Therapist must deal discreetly and sensitively with confidential information, and as needed, will perform customer service recovery with patients and family members.
Interdisciplinary team integration and collaboration across disciplines to provide patient-centered care is a priority at Mary Free Bed. Maintaining effective working relationships with admitting and consulting physicians at Mary Free Bed is an important responsibility of each Respiratory Therapist. In addition, each Respiratory Therapist is responsible to develop and maintain professional working relationships with colleagues from other disciplines that are involved in the care of each patient and family.
Each Respiratory Therapist employed at Mary Free Bed is responsible to perform within the policies, procedures, and standards of care set by the organization. This often requires demonstration of competency to meet regulatory and accreditation requirements and in alignment with recognized standards of care and best practice benchmarks. Each Respiratory Therapist is responsible to demonstrate competency in those areas required by the department, within the defined time frame.

Responsible to follow all policies and procedures related to employee safety. Respiratory Therapist will assist with employee selection and orientation process for new team members. As a preceptor, each Respiratory Therapist will collaborate with the Leadership Team to provide a comprehensive orientation for the new team member.
Each Respiratory Therapist will follow departmental policies and procedures related to payroll practices, patient chargeable items and other opportunities to provide high-value nursing care at a reasonable price to our customers. As opportunities for cost savings and efficiency are identified, these will be shared with the appropriate member of the Leadership Team. Will obtain skill set needed to participate in the growth of strategic programs within MFB.

Essential Job Qualifications
Registered Respiratory Therapist in the state of Michigan. Newly graduated respiratory therapist have 90 days to successfully complete registry exam.
Associates degree is required.
Current ACLS and PALS certification. May obtain within nine months of assuming the position.
Previous experience as a Respiratory Therapist, is preferred but not required.
Strong critical thinking, decision-making, delegation, and leadership skills are required to work.
Time management and organizational skills are very important, as well as effective written and verbal communication skills.
Must be able to work effectively under time requirements and deadlines, problem-solve when facing unexpected issues, handle interruptions, and prioritize effectively.

Under general supervision from the Respiratory manager and/or Director, and in accordance with the policies and guidelines established within the organization. Routinely functions in patient care areas of the hospital. The respiratory therapist follows the provider prescription and/or established policies and procedures, initiates and administers respiratory care to patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy (AS), Bachelor's degree preferred.
Current Respiratory Therapist license in the State of Michigan license is required.

Position Summary:
Under general supervision from the Respiratory manager and/or Director, and in accordance with the policies and guidelines established within the organization. Routinely functions in patient care areas of the hospital. The respiratory therapist follows the provider prescription and/or established policies and procedures, initiates and administers respiratory care to patients with cardiopulmonary abnormalities and deficiencies. Serves as a resource of knowledge to providers, nurses and other hospital team members regarding advanced respiratory diagnosis and rehabilitation.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Associate's degree in Respiratory Therapy (AS), Bachelor's degree preferred.
Current Respiratory Therapist license in the State of Michigan license is required.
For anyone hired after 2004, Registered Respiratory Therapist credentials (RRT) is required within 1 year of hire.
Must attend courses through AHA: BLS, ACLS, PALS and AAP-NRP to become certified per site requirements. All sites require BLS certification within 3 months of hire. ACLS, PALS and NRP (site specific certifications are required within 1 year of date of hire

Work which produces levels of mental/visual fatigue which are typical of jobs that perform a wide variety of duties with frequent and significant uncontrollable deadlines. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Responsible for working in a safe and protective manner at all times keeping in mind that safety and environmental hazards are the responsibility of all employees for themselves, other staff members and patients.
Provides patient's respiratory therapy and communicates findings to appropriate personnel. Evaluates objective and subjective information in a logical and thorough manner. Discusses conclusions with providers and nurses to resolve patient problems promptly.
Routinely evaluates blood gases (both invasive and non-invasive) in a logical and thorough manner. Discusses conclusions and suggests therapy changes based on ABG results.
Communicates ventilator recommendations to providers and nursing based on patient evaluation and blood gases.
Checks that provider orders are complete and administers therapy accordingly.
Performs all respiratory therapies (age-specific) in accordance with provider orders, protocols, or guidelines.

* Routinely maintains artificial airways (endotracheal tube and tracheostomy tubes) in accordance with department policy (i.e. suctioning and securing endotracheal tubes).
* Maintains stability of artificial airways. Assure tube security and repositions endotracheal tubes according to policy.
* Is able to appropriately utilize infant and pediatric resuscitation equipment in emergency situations, including PEEP adaptions and pop-off valves.
Provides assistance with patient and family education along with other members of the healthcare team.
Performs basic pulmonary function testing, EKG's, arterial blood gases, pulse oximetry, end tidal CO2 monitoring and transcutaneous oximetry in accordance with outlined departmental policies and procedures.
Assists with bedside bronchoscopies, intubations, and extubations in accordance with outlined departmental policies and procedures,
Performs naso-tracheal, endo-tracheal, tracheal suction and sample collections in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
Must be able to assist with patient transport via walking, wheelchair, gurney, or crib for safe delivery of continuum of care. May be responsible for assisting with ambulance transports within one facility to another.

Qualifications:
* Current licensure as a Respiratory Therapist in the State of Michigan (or eligibility)
* CRT or RRT certification required (RRT within a year of hire)
* Prior clinical experience preferred, but new grads are encouraged to apply

Licensure / Certification / Registration:
* Advanced Life Support obtained within 3 Months (90 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
* BLS Provider obtained within 1 Month (30 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
* Certification specializing in Neonatal Resuscitation credentialed from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) obtained within 12 Months (1 year) of hire date or job transfer date required.
* Pediatric Advanced Life Support obtained within 9 Months (270 days) of hire date or job transfer date required. American Heart Association or American Red Cross accepted.
* Respiratory Therapist credentialed from the Michigan Board of Respiratory Care obtained prior to hire date or job transfer date required.
* Respiratory Therapist specializing in Registered credentialed from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) obtained within 12 Months (1 year) of hire date or job transfer date required.
Education:
* High School diploma equivalency with 2 years of cumulative experience OR Associate's degree/Technical degree OR 4 years of applicable cumulative job specific experience required.
