Job Summar
This Respiratory Therapist performs as a clinically competent practitioner and provides respiratory care to patients with minimal guidance. They perform the therapy, management, rehabilitation, diagnostic evaluation and care of patients with deficiencies and abnormalities which affect the cardiopulmonary system and associated aspects of other system functions.
Responsibilities include administering oxygen and other medical gases, utilizing aerosolized medications, positive pressure breathing devices, ventilators, resuscitation devices, etc. Performs pulmonary diagnostic procedures and assessments. Demonstrates an understanding of the principles of growth and development to assess each patient's individual age specific needs and to provide individualized age specific treatments and care.
The RRT demonstrates efficiency across clinical/critical care settings to provide quality service to patient care units through communication, cooperation and collaboration with our heath care team.
Participates in additional training and/or certification courses to develop expertise and skills to become certified to work in specialized clinical areas.
Qualifications
Associates Degree required, Bachelor's Degree preferred from an AMA approved Respiratory program.
Ability to function as a self-directed team member.
Valid State of Connecticut Respiratory Care Practitioner license
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) granted by The National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) prior to Orientation

JOB SUMMARY
The RCP shall be responsible for the assessment, planning and administration of all respiratory care offered by the Respiratory Care Department. They shall provide these services to all ages (to include neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric) in accordance with the Policy and Procedures. They shall function clinically with a considerable amount of independent judgment regarding the delivery of quality patient care, reassessment of patient care needs, education of patient and family, as established by department policy and procedures and with medical guidance.

Graduate of an Advanced Level Respiratory Therapist Educational Program or two (2) year Respiratory college.
Experience preferred - accepting wewly graduated with no previous experience but with 1,000 clinical hours in a hospital setting.
RRT registered by N.B.R.C.
Current CT state licensure as Respiratory Care Practitioner
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification
ACLS, within 6 months of hire
Current PALS or STABLE Certification and NRP certification preferred

POSITION SUMMARY:
Performs safe respiratory therapy modalities as ordered by physician, developing a plan of care based on assessment data and standards of care, identifying needs for alternative action in the plan of treatment and involves the multi-disciplinary team in revisions to plan of care. Sets up, maintains and monitors mechanical ventilation according to policy and procedure. Administers medications demonstrating thorough knowledge of policy and procedure. Assembles, selects, operates, and cleans respiratory equipment for proper and appropriate function. This includes but is not limited to mechanical ventilators, BIPAP/CPAP and High Flow systems, oxygen delivery devices and oxygen analyzers, manual resuscitators, and suctioning equipment. Performs tracheal, endotracheal, and nasopharyngeal suctioning including the instillation of pharmacologic agents according to policy and procedure. Draws blood gases and runs samples through the iStat point of care device to process results, all following policy and procedure. Interprets arterial blood gas and oximetry results and reports critical values to the ordering provider. Differentiates between patient and equipment problems and intervenes appropriately. Documents and communicates all patient therapies including concerns during shift.

1. Demonstrates proper setup, operation, and monitoring of equipment used for delivery of therapeutic gases (Heliox, bubble CPAP, High-Flow O2, nebulized and humidified O2) as evidenced by competencies and/or direct observation.
1. Performs aerosol therapy (small volume nebulizers, large volume nebulizers, Vix1 nebs, ISO nebs) in accordance with departmental policy and procedure as evidenced by competencies and/or direct observation.
1. Delivers medications safely in accordance with 2-identifier policy and procedure as evidenced by competencies and/or direct observation. Responds to adverse effects of medications by proper notification to physician and utilizing the Catalyst reporting system.
1. Performs Chest Physio Therapy in accordance with departmental policy and procedure as evidenced by competencies and/or direct observation.
1. Performs proper technique in suctioning (open and closed systems) in age specific populations in accordance with department policy and procedure as evidenced by competencies and/or direct observation.
1. Provide NICU support for setup, maintenance, and breakdown of respiratory equipment, including, but not limited to, bubble CPAP, High-Flow systems, and mechanical ventilators.
1. Shows proper skill level setting up cart including labeling of medications/solutions when appropriate and performing “Time Out” during outpatient and in-patient bronchoscopy procedures as evidenced by competencies and/or direct observation.
1. Demonstrates knowledge of operation and set up of bronchoscopy and monitoring equipment. Provide physician support during bronchoscopy such as, instilling solutions, taking biopsy samples, utilizing brushings per department protocols, handling, labeling, and ordering of samples in EMR from physician order, transport of specimens to lab for processing, and billing/documentation of procedure.
1. Demonstrates safe and proper collection, transport and analysis of arterial blood gases as evidenced by successful completion of competencies, including age specific requirements for sampling and testing, and/or direct observation.
1. Understands the theory and operation of the point of care blood gas analyzer as evidenced by the ability to assess the accuracy/precision of the instrument utilizing daily maintenance record. Routine trouble shooting and monthly QC.
Qualifications
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:
· Graduate of an approved Respiratory Care program. Must provide a copy of diploma or transcript upon hire.
· The candidate must hold the credential of Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) from the National Board of Respiratory Care and a current license from the State of Connecticut to practice as a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
· A candidate with a CRT credential must obtain the RRT credential from the NBRC within 12 months of employment.
· The candidate will hold a current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification and maintain certification as required by the organization.
· Current Neonatal Resuscitation Program Provider (NRP) or Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Advance Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable but not required.
· Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) certification is desirable but not required.
EXPERIENCE:
· A minimum of one (1) year of skilled respiratory experience within the last two years.
· Must be able to work well and efficiently independently and with others in a fast paced acute patient care environment.

2.1 Records all care provided via electronic medical record accurately. Identifies patient on written documents by using MRN and patient labels as required by department and hospital policy. Notes consistently include ABGs, patient assessment, weaning assessment, and parameters. Maintains patient confidentiality with documentation practices.
3. Consultation and Collaboration and Oral Communication: Communicates clearly and appropriately with co-workers. Demonstrates a cooperative team spirit, effectively contributing to excellence of patient care.
3.1 Patient report information is appropriate and conveys current patient status. Gives report using SBAR format and attentively, courteously accepts report in order to facilitate transition from one shift to the next. Accurately, completely, and concisely gives a safe hand off for all relevant clinical information on patient's clinical course and status.
4. Self-Development, Professionalism and Leadership - Assumes responsibility for maintaining clinical competency through continuing education, professional growth, and development.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Set up, apply, and administer therapy as directed, using complete range of respiratory equipment. Control such factors as respiratory ratio, pressure, volume, percentage of oxygen and other gases, administer aerosol medications, continuously monitor patient's condition.
Perform pulmonary consultations and make recommendations for modes of therapy, frequency, medication, and duration as requested. Evaluate effectiveness of therapy by auscultation, laboratory tests, clinical observation, reporting significant changes to attending physicians and supervisors.
Perform basic bedside pulmonary testing. Perform advanced pulmonary function testing in the pulmonary function laboratory using highly technical and complex equipment to measure volumes, flows, diffusion rates, and metabolic oxygen requirements.
Perform techniques used in blood gas analysis. Oversee the training of all new personnel rotating through the Blood Gas Laboratory. Perform basic sleep studies.
Maintain required records, charts, etc. Record treatments given and as needed, prepare charges for submission to accounting. Assist in setting up and maintaining quality control standards and programs within the department.
Provide direction, assistance, and guidance to assigned personnel. Participate as an instructor in teaching basic respiratory therapy procedures and routines to other hospital staff who have occasion to handle respiratory equipment. Assist supervisory personnel in orientation and further training of new personnel.
Provide education to patients on disease processes, breathing, medications, and use of home respiratory therapy equipment when requested by physician or nursing.
Provide emergency assistance such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Assist in reconditioning and maintenance of routine therapy equipment. Maintain, calibrate, and repair highly specialized diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, such as blood gas analyzers, computerized pulmonary function and gas analyzers.
Follow all organizational and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, confidentiality, quality improvement program, compliance, safety, infection control, environmental standards, and information management systems standards of use.

Provides ventilator care, secretion mobilization treatments, and other treatments as ordered by physician.
Provides all aspects of airway care, maintenance and education.
Performs breathing assessments and mechanics as needed for all purposes as ordered by physician.
Interprets Orders - Draws and analyze arterial blood gases, and reviews patient information to assess patient condition and determine requirements for treatment such as type and duration of therapy, and medication and dosage.
Participates in ambulation and mobility.
Charts all pertinent information on patient's chart.
Assists in bedside Bronchoscopy.
Sets up and operates devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems and aerosol generators.
May act in the role of Charge Therapist and carry out shift responsibilities as assigned.
Assists in the orientation and training of students, new staff members, patients, families and care.
Active member of code team - responds to emergencies and provides care, CPR, airway maintenance including intubation.
Represents Respiratory Care as a member of the multidisciplinary patient care team.
Evaluates patients upon admission & discharge.
Requirements:
Associate's of Science degree required
Bachelor's degree in a health related field preferred
Current RRT Certificate required
Current CT RCP license required
Current American Heart Association BLS and ACLS Certifications required
WORK SCHEDULE: 32 hours, days, / 7:00p-3:30 a.m. including every other weekend and holiday
