Overview
Purpose Statement/Position Summary: The Respiratory Care Practitioner, under direct supervision, conducts patient assessments, assists with the development of the plan of care, provides and evaluates general, basic patient care with assistance to an assigned group of patients according to patient specific age and/or developmental needs. Collaborates with other health care team members in the delivery of care. Will follow applicable policies and procedures in handling supplies, pharmaceuticals, and equipment.
The Respiratory Care Team is accountable for delivering high-quality, evidence-based respiratory therapy to pediatric patients across inpatient and outpatient settings, including critical care, pulmonary diagnostics, and sleep lab services. We support CHLA's mission to create hope and build healthier futures by ensuring safe, compassionate, and innovative care.
Minimum Qualifications/Work Experience: 1+ year experience as a CHLA RCP I, or 2+ years critical care experience as an RCP. Experience with pediatric patients. Broad knowledge of respiratory care principles and equipment; CHLA patient care policies and procedures. Ability to assess effectiveness of patient care; maintain a calm demeanor and assist in crises and emergencies; prioritize tasks for complex patient care; communicate tactfully, professionally and effectively, verbally and in writing.
Preferred experience: Bilingual skills (Spanish preferred), prior experience in a children's hospital setting, interest in professional development and quality improvement initiatives.
Education/Licensure/Certifications: Graduate of an A.M.A, and CoARC accredited School of Respiratory Care. RCP license from the state of California. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) from the NBRC. Current American Heart Association BLS, PALS, ACLS required. Additional competencies may be required by the work location.
Schedule: Nights 7pm-7am

$79,934.00-$131,321.00

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
Two (2) years' experience performing at the level of Senior Respiratory Care Practitioner* or above. A Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in respiratory therapy or administration will be accepted for one (1) year of the required experience.
PHYSICAL CLASS: 3- Moderate:Includes standing or walking most of the time, with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching; includes working on irregular surfaces, occasionally lifting objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

Essential Duties
Include but are not limited to:
Set up and operate devices such as mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators, following specified parameters of treatment.
Provide emergency care, including artificial respiration, external cardiac massage and assistance with cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Determine requirements for treatment, such as type, method and duration of therapy, precautions to be taken, and medication and dosages, compatible with physicians' orders.
Monitor patient's physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes, and consult with physician if adverse reactions occur.
Read prescription, measure arterial blood gases, and review patient information to assess patient condition.
Work as part of a team of physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals to manage patient care.
Enforce safety rules and ensure careful adherence to physicians' orders.
Maintain charts that contain patients' pertinent identification and therapy information.
Inspect, clean, test and maintain respiratory therapy equipment to ensure equipment is functioning safely and efficiently, ordering repairs when necessary.
Educate residents and their families about their conditions and teach appropriate disease management techniques, such as breathing exercises and the use of medications and respiratory equipment.
Explain treatment procedures to patients to gain cooperation and allay fears.
Perform bronchopulmonary drainage and assist or instruct patients in performance of breathing exercises.
Demonstrate respiratory care procedures to trainees and other health care personnel.
Make emergency visits to resolve equipment problems.
Provide supervision and guidance for residents during skills building activities.
Develop and implement individual treatment plans for residents.
Assist with daily living activities, including preparing meals and assisting with personal hygiene.
Develop a rapport with residents and cultivate a safe and supportive relationship.
Update resident case notes on a daily basis.
Ensure an appropriate staff-to-client ratio at all times.

Requirements
High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.
Possess (and maintain) a current Respiratory License/Credentials from an accredited body. Preferred types include Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT); Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT); CA Respiratory Care Practitioner License (RCP)
1+ years of experience as a Respiratory Therapist or similar role is desired, but not required.
Possess a current driver license with a clean driving record and the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely.
Possess a service-oriented mindset with genuine passion to provide care for others.
Possess knowledge of the field and best practices. This includes, but is not limited to, concepts such as: Methods of oxygen delivery and possible side effects; Laws regulating the field/patient populations and regulatory entities; Proper sanitation and other care procedures, etc.

Possess clear and effective communication skills, both written and verbal.

Schedule Availability: Shift length can vary but are generally 12 hours (day and night shifts). Availability on weekends and holidays is required. Overtime opportunities may be available.
