Can set up, initiate and maintain ventilators and CPAP devices.Is familiar with the principles of airway maintenance, endotracheal and tracheostomy care. Follows the procedures and observations for care during and after extubation.Initiates and maintains cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other related life support procedures.Confers with physicians regarding all aspects of Respiratory Therapy concerning patient care.Administers specific dosages of all Respiratory Therapy related medications as specified by a physician. Recognizes, interprets, and records signs and symptoms of medication side effects particularly those that require notification of a physician.Effectively and safely uses equipment for delivering positive pressure, humidification, nebulization, and medications to patients.Effectively utilizes methods that assist in the removal of secretions from the bronchial tree such as, hydration, breathing and coughing exercise, postural drainage, chest percussion and airway suctioning.Performs all aspects of pulmonary function testing, if trained. Effectively uses all department pulmonary function equipment.Performs 12 lead EKG's and prepares them for physician interpretation.When needed is capable of overseeing the work of the certified and non-certified technicians who are performing those procedures requiring a high level of expertise.Is able to dismantle and reassemble most of the Respiratory Therapy equipment. Is able to take all necessary precautions to insure the safe handling of all respiratory equipment.Works well with each age level of patient. POSITION SUMMARY: The Respiratory Therapist works in accordance with evidenced based policies and procedures of the Medical Center with all patient populations. Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide respiratory therapy to patients as ordered by the prescribing physician that is appropriate to all the ages of the patients served. In accordance with established policies and procedures, administers medical gases, medications, airway clearance, mechanical ventilation, other respiratory modalities, monitor levels of supplies and equipment for department and patient care areas. Applies theoretical knowledge to care of neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients with other members of the healthcare team by demonstrating competence in respiratory skills, problem solving, and critical thinking that is appropriate to the ages of the patients served. Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS Education: * Associate's degree, Successful completion of respiratory therapy program from an accredited school. Experience: * Must have basic electronic medical record documentation skills. Licensure/ Certification: * BLS required, NRP after 6 months of hire. Must be a credentialed Registered Respiratory Therapist by the National Board of Respiratory Care. * Must have a current Respiratory Care Practitioner license and current National Board of Respiratory Care (NBRC) credentials if credentialed after July 1, 2002 or a new graduate therapist must successfully pass both the NBRC TMC (The Multiple Choice) and CSE (Clinical Simulation Exam) exams. Proof of Application must be made for appropriate state licensure before orientation to the department can begin. Licensure must be obtained within six months of hire for new graduates per the Licensure Practice Act. Other Skills/ Knowledge: * At SFMC Peoria; NICU therapists must have current NRP (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) card. * At SFMC Peoria; transport therapist must complete agility, hearing and helicopter safety training. * At SFMC Peoria; Airway Managers must complete intubation orientation and maintain a current ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) card.
