Summary:
A Certified Respiratory Therapist delivers respiratory interventions and support for patients with acute respiratory problems, as well as routine care for chronic respiratory disorders. They assist in the treatment and management of patients with common pulmonary conditions, such as asthma, COPD, and pneumonia. CRTs administer respiratory treatments, monitor equipment, and educate patients and families on the proper usage of respiratory therapies and devices.
Essential Work Functions:
Assist in implementing and adjusting patient treatment plans under the guidance of physicians or RRTs
Examine and interview patients with breathing and/or cardiopulmonary disorders
Perform diagnostics tests, such as measuring lung capacity or collecting blood/sputum samples
Administer respiratory treatments, including aerosol medications and oxygen therapy
Set up and monitor equipment to ensure the patient is receiving the correct amount of oxygen at the correct rate
Observe and record patient status and progress
Educate patients and/or family members on how to properly take medication and use equipment
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of CRT practice
Required Essential Skills:

The ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language
Ability to read/comprehend written instructions, follow verbal instructions, and proficiency in PC skills

Overview

Position Summary
Restores patients' pulmonary function through pulmonary function testing, education, inhaler techniques; alleviates pain; supports life by planning and administering medically prescribed respiratory therapy.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Meets patient's goals and needs and provides quality care by conducting pulmonary function tests; assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results; determining respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and by prescription.
Helps patient accomplish treatment plan and supports life by administering inhalants; operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators.
Administers respiratory therapy treatments by assisting with breathing exercises; monitoring physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes; directing treatments given by aides, technicians and assistants.
Evaluates effects of respiratory therapy treatment plan by observing, noting, and evaluating patient's progress; recommending adjustments and modifications.
Documents patient care services by charting in patient records via EHR.
Maintains patient confidence and protects hospital operations by keeping information confidential.
Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.

Position Description
The Sleep Study Technician will work under the direct supervision of the Pulmonary Provider. The Sleep Study Technician in this position shall perform services in accordance with the professional standards of McDonald Army Health Center. The employee shall have the following knowledge and abilities, but may not necessarily be limited to:
Must be able to recognize abnormally functioning equipment and render initial repairs
Must take steps to discontinue study when repairs cannot be made
Must have practical knowledge of a wide range of technical methods, principles, and practices applicable to sleep study
Technician must have the skill to independently plan difficult assignments
Technician must have an advanced understanding of sleep disorders and the skill to independently perform procedures involving very fine distinctions and fine-tune complex computerized precision instruments
Must have an advanced understanding of physiology, especially in relation to cardiopulmonary function
Must have an advanced understanding of electromyography (EMG) and its application to sleep study
Must be able to provide a variety of detailed diagnostic tests and monitoring of patients

Orders to include: diagnosis, ICD -10 code, type and duration of therapy, type and dosage of medication, FI02 and frequency.
Check resident's chart for history, physical and for pertinent information to determine precautions to be observed at bedside.
Observe and chart: pulse, respiration, breath sounds (number and quality), and resident's general appearance, including breathing exercises and teaching and training to residents.

ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Respiratory Therapist with Apria Healthcare, you'll provide in-home, onsite, and Telehealth respiratory care for patients using invasive and non-invasive ventilation, sleep therapy, and oxygen. This role blends clinical care, patient education, and technology.
This position is based out of the Chesapeake, VA branch with approximately 50% onsite work and 50% field-based patient visits.

• 8:30-5:00.
On Call:
• 1 week per month.
Travel:
• Mileage reimbursed at $0.70 per mile

PAY & BENEFITS
Hourly range: $38.50/hr.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Provides instruction to patients and/or caregivers on the proper use of equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.
Ensures patients and/or caregivers can effectively operate and maintain equipment. Performs clinical assessments and tests such as pulse oximetry, ETCO2, spirometry, and vital signs.
Responsible for routine patient follow-up contacts based on individual needs.
May need to perform on-call duties as needed.
Provides and operates various types of respiratory care equipment including but not limited to oxygen therapy, nebulization therapy, apnea monitoring, suctioning, PAP, invasive and non-invasive ventilation.
Inspects and tests equipment to ensure proper operating condition.
Prepares and maintains a record for each patient containing all pertinent information, care plans, physician prescriptions and follow-up documentation.
Responsible for accurate data entry on monitoring websites for certain respiratory equipment
Consults with referring physician regarding patient treatment, medical condition, home environment, and Plan of Care.
Participates in ongoing education and training sessions regarding respiratory patient care.
Assist with patient scheduling as needed.
Performs other duties as required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations or Professional Designations
Must possess a valid and current driver's license and auto insurance per Apria policy. Will be required to drive personal vehicle for patient home visits.
Registration or certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC).
Hold a current RCP license in the state of practice (or states that the location covers) if that state requires an RCP license to allow the practice of respiratory therapy.
Hold a current CPR Certification.
Hold all applicable licensure in good standing for all states of practice.
