Job summary: Under the supervision of the Critical Care Director, Medical Director and Respiratory Department Manager, the respiratory therapist is responsible for providing Respiratory Care services in accordance with specific physician's orders, department policies and procedures.
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
* Maintains knowledge of the various methods of oxygen delivery, including the necessary equipment. Remains alert, assesses possible side effects to oxygen delivery
* Administers respiratory therapy treatments, understands the purpose of each and the possible side effects associated with each.
* Sets-up and monitors mechanical ventilators and the associated critical care duties required for such treatment, such as airway management and tracheal suctioning
* Performs arterial punctures to obtain arterial blood samples for blood gas analysis, and understands the possible complications and contraindications associated with the procedure

Set-up and Delivery:

Perform respiratory CPAP and BIPAP patient set-ups, patient assessments and follow-ups according to defined schedule
Document all patient visit/phone call outcomes on a daily delivery log and patient notes from clinical chart. All paperwork should be turned in by the end of the day
Deliver and set-up Resp./Sleep Therapy equipment, dispensing new patient packet where required. Answer any questions patient may have or relay questions to the appropriate personnel
Explain patient rights, checklist, P&Ps to the patient
Verify actual merchandise
Communicate any patient/customer concerns to your supervisor immediately (and document chart)
Customer Service:
Handle telephone calls in an informed and professional manner.
Answer incoming telephone calls in a timely and professional manner
Route telephone calls to the appropriate person
Answer telephone calls questions asked by patient/customer to the best of your ability or transfer to the appropriate person for an answer. Consider taking patient information and calling back with an answer
Vehicle Management:
Maintain clean, stocked, tuned and orderly company vehicle.
Check vehicle daily for any defect or damage externally as well as internally
Keep vehicles clean and orderly at all times. Maintain equipment per vehicle inventory list.
Maintain stock of personal protective gear (i.e. gloves, hand sanitizer, mask, etc.)
Follow vehicle maintenance schedule and obtain service when needed at designated sites.
Report any mechanical problems to supervisor and obtain necessary service in a timely manner.

Responsibilities
Under the direction and authorization of the medical director and cardiopulmonary director, the RRT is responsible for performing respiratory therapeutic and pulmonary diagnostic procedures as ordered by the physician. 4. Adult Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) from the AHA or ARC certification upon hire and maintain current.
5. Blood Gas Technologist Licensed by the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services within 90 days of hire.

A Respiratory Therapist Apprentice is a student currently enrolled in a Respiratory Care program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC). Nature and Scope
The incumbent is in frequent contact with Respiratory Care staff, patients, and nursing personnel. The incumbent must be knowledgeable of the uses of respiratory equipment specific to the area of specialty. This position is responsible for demonstrating proficiency in body mechanics, fire safety, infection control, patient safety, CPR, and safe handling of hazardous materials.
This position is responsible for the maintenance of unit supplies and interdepartmental communication. The incumbent is responsible for making decisions regarding the levels of stock (disposable or non-disposable) to be maintained. The major challenges to this position are to meet the demands of several areas at once (i.e., process bronchoscopy cart, oxygen delivery, transporting of respiratory equipment, and assisting Therapists) while maintaining normal business operations.
Under the supervision of a licensed Respiratory Therapist the incumbent performs non-emergent and non-critical care respiratory therapy procedures. Respiratory Therapist Apprentices primarily collaborates with patients in adult general care, pediatric general care, and may provide respiratory care at secondary care sites.
The scope of practice for a Respiratory Therapist Apprentices includes non-emergent and non-critical care respiratory therapy procedures that have documented / verified skills by the Respiratory Care Educator.
Evidence based respiratory practice, along with beginning critical thinking skills, are required to provide optimally safe patient care when interacting with internal and external contacts and exercising judgment and making decisions.
This position is challenged to integrate the respiratory care of the patient with other care providers to achieve desired results and optimal outcomes.
The incumbent has the authority to initiate BLS, to contact other Respiratory Therapists in relation to care ordered, and perform all activities as assigned under the supervision of his or her authorized respiratory instructor.
The incumbent is responsible for the proper documentation of all patient records (all documentation must be cosigned by a licensed Respiratory Therapist) and department logs, keeping abreast of changes in the Respiratory and health care field, and is accountable for the completion of care tasks assigned and ordered for Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric patients. They must demonstrate the ability to collaborate with patient's physical, motor / sensory adaptation, cognitive and psychosocial needs specific to the population being served and meet standards of quality as measured by the Unit/Department age specific competency standards.
The Respiratory Therapy Apprentice is responsible for ensuring a positive patient experience is achieved. This is accomplished through initially making a connection, introducing yourself, explaining the duration of the work being performed, explaining the procedure / task, and thanking the patient when complete (CIDET).
Additionally, the Respiratory Therapy Apprentice is responsible for service recovery when the patient experience does not go well. This is accomplished by listening with empathy to the concern, apologizing for the experience, solving the problem if able and escalating to leadership if not able, and thanking the patient for providing us with an opportunity to improve their experience (LAST).
Intense continuous mental effort is required to provide optimal safe patient care, and the same mental effort is required when interacting with internal and external contacts, exercising judgments, and making decisions.
Sixty (60) days prior to completion of the Respiratory Care Program, the Respiratory Therapy Apprentice must begin the Nevada Respiratory Intern licensing process and apply for a Respiratory Therapy Intern position. Upon completion of the Respiratory Care program, Respiratory Therapy Apprentice will no longer be able to practice Respiratory Care on patients.
This position does provide direct patient care under supervision.

Responsibilities
Under the direction and authorization of the medical director and cardiopulmonary director, the RRT is responsible for performing respiratory therapeutic and pulmonary diagnostic procedures as ordered by the physician. Assists in the treatment and management of patients with clinical needs.

Provides instruction to patients and/or caregivers on the proper use of equipment and/or respiratory care procedures.

Prepares and maintains a record for each patient containing all pertinent information, care plans, physician prescriptions and follow-up documentation.
Responsible for accurate data entry on monitoring websites for certain respiratory equipment
Consults with referring physician regarding patient treatment, medical condition, home environment, and Plan of Care.
Participates in ongoing education and training sessions regarding respiratory patient care.
Assist with patient scheduling as needed.
Performs other duties as required.

10. Interprets diagnostic and monitoring data with a high degree of competence; ie: arterial blood gas sampling.
11. Applies new techniques and procedures with high proficiency within days of training/orientation on new procedures, processes, and equipment.

13. Required to remain proficient in neonatal intubations.

Respiratory Therapist (Nights)- Full Time

This position performs respiratory therapy procedures per protocol and those ordered by physicians to improve the cardiopulmonary conditions of patients from newborn to geriatric ages. Respiratory therapists work with patients in the intensive care unit, emergency room, and medical/surgical unit, and may provide respiratory care at secondary care sites with the mission and obligations of Carson Valley Health. This position also performs 12 lead EKGs and outpatient respiratory procedures that include pulmonary function testing and overnight oximetry testing.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Education Required:
Must be a graduate of an approved school of respiratory care.
Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English.
Computer literacy.
Licensure Required:
State of Nevada Board of Medical Examiners Respiratory Care Practitioner License.
Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) (NBRC - National Board for Respiratory Care).
Certifications Required:
AHA approved ACLS, PALS and BLS certification.
Other Work Requirements:
Must provide on-call availability for a minimum of 7 work shifts every 6 months.
Minimum Work Experience:
Two years of past work experience as a RRT in an acute care setting.
POSITION ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Policy/Procedures
Demonstrates the ability to evaluate and assess each patient's pulmonary status by reviewing the medical record for history and physical, consultations, surgery reports, radiology and laboratory values, and any other pertinent documentation. Assesses patient's condition through interviews and direct observation, including but not limited to vital signs, patient color, skin turgor, chest inspection, auscultation, sputum production, etc. with each patient interaction as indicated, including before and after therapeutic interventions.
Uses data, facts, literature and consultation with the patient/family to make decisions that optimize patient outcomes.
Provides physiological and psychological care in accordance with evidence based practice, Carson Valley Medical Center policies, and Nevada Revised Statues.
Initiates and documents assessment in the patient's medical record and department records consistent with department policies and practices.
Remains current on all competencies, certifications, and training.
Demonstrates the ability to provide a thorough concise report at change of shift or upon transfer of patient to another clinical area. Inclusive of: diagnosis, ventilator parameters, care plan, physician comments, diagnostic and lab reports, treatment schedule and impending activities (CT scan, Surgery, MRI, transport, etc.).
This position is expected to integrate the respiratory care of the patient with other care providers to achieve desired results. They are responsible for the proper documentation of all patient records and department logs. In addition, they are responsible for keeping abreast of technological advances in applicable areas and are well versed in appropriate clinical applications.
The Respiratory Therapist is accountable for the assessment, planning, implementation of care, and evaluation of Neonatal, Pediatric, Adult and Geriatric patients and families. They must demonstrate the ability to work with patient's physical, motor/sensory adaptation, cognitive and psychosocial needs specific to the population being served.
“Respiratory Care” means the treatment, management, diagnostic testing, control and care of persons with deficiencies and abnormalities with the cardiopulmonary system. The Respiratory Therapist has the authority to perform and evaluate respiratory care, initiate CPR, manage artificial airways, contact physicians, and perform all activities as assigned.
This position does provide direct patient care.
Code Team, Rapid Response Team, Trauma Team
As member of the Code Team, Rapid Response team, and Trauma activation the Respiratory Therapist will responds to all overhead and phone pages. The Respiratory Therapist will remain in the room until cleared by the physician.
Attends mock codes.
Equipment
Responsible for the setup, safety checks, monitoring, and troubleshooting of all equipment of the respiratory department.
Responsible for maintaining the intubation trays in all crash carts throughout the hospital including the pediatric intubation boxes in the ER and the OR.
EKG
Performs 12 lead EKGs as ordered by the physician.
Ensures that all EKG's done in the facility are charged and scanned into the patients EMR.
Pulmonary Function Testing (PFT) and Overnight Pulse Oximetry Testing (OPO) (Dayshift FT Staff)
Maintains yearly competency on the MGC Diagnostics Program and OPO device.
Schedules outpatient PFTs/OPOs in a timely manner.
Performs PFTs as ordered by the physician.
Accurately and appropriately documents PFT/OPO results in the patients EMR.
Knowledge/Certifications/Licensure
Attends 75% of staff meetings during the year.
Attends annual competency days as observed by the manager to keep current with new developments and acquire the needed knowledge for the position in order to keep skills up to date.
Maintains required license and certifications for position.
Attends hospital sponsored training programs as required by department.
Completes continuing education programs in order to maintain state and NBRC licensure.
Provides in-service education of clinical staff as assigned by the manager.
Safety/Training Programs
Attends all required safety training programs and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety, department/service safety, and specific job-related hazards.
All required safety education programs will be attended and kept in the employee file.
Provides complete and accurate responses to safety questions.
Operates assigned equipment and performs all procedures in a safe manner as instructed.
Maintains work area and equipment in condition required by department standards.
Demonstrates proper body mechanics in all functions.

Responsibilities
Under the direction and authorization of the medical director and cardiopulmonary director, the RRT is responsible for performing respiratory therapeutic and pulmonary diagnostic procedures as ordered by the physician.
