Responsibilities
Minimum cleaning and maintenance of R.T. equipment.
Prepares and tests R.T. equipment for proper and safe operation and periodically checks R.T. equipment in use and on units for proper operation and routine service. Reports malfunctioning equipment to manager.
Follows and enforces safety rules of the R.T. Department and hospital following special instructions, such as isolation precautions to prevent the spread of infection.
Receives, verifies, and processes all necessary documentation for correct order.
Documents patient oxygen use for charging purposes by visual inspection of every patient care unit bed.
Changes humidifiers and aerosol generators according to department policy.
Performs emergency rounds according to department policy.
Distributes E-cylinders of oxygen to the designated gas stations within MMC.
Receives and documents orders from physicians relating to Respiratory Care Order Set. Also reads and evaluates physician orders and charts that pertain to respiratory care and is aware of contraindication to medications, treatments, and related hazards with their use.
Measures and administers prescribed medications to patients (oxygen & aerosolized medications, etc.). Also administers the following therapy: EZPAP, humidity and aerosols, chest physical therapy, incentive spirometry, pulse oximetry, BiPAP and CPAP administration and bedside pulmonary function/mechanics.
Assesses patients' conditions and response to respiratory therapy by checking patients pulse, blood pressure, respiratory frequency, tidal volume, inspiratory pressure, cough, sputum, breath sounds, and other pertinent data that relates to the patient. Must also be alert to adverse reactions of patient during treatment, plus be aware of proper response to emergencies.
Recognizes signs of cardiopulmonary arrest and/or failure and assists in performing CPR procedures. Also must be able to recognize life-threatening arrhythmias or EKG strips.
Modifies therapy to deal with adverse or ineffective patient response and reports changes to shift supervisor.
Records procedures and patient response in appropriate electronic documentation, departmental paperwork, medication administration records, interdisciplinary plan of care and education record and requisitions. Completes both written and oral reports on patients and relays information to oncoming therapists.
Participates in in-services, continuing education, and other staff development activities.
Performs CPR procedures as part of the Stat Code Team.
Keeps confidential all patient information received and follows MMC Guest Relations guidelines.
Follows MMC and Pulmonary Medicine infection control policies
Performs all duties under supervision of Certified Respiratory Therapist, Registered Respiratory Therapist, or shift supervisor.
Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

Respiratory Care Practitioners:
Perform respiratory care according to policies, procedures, and protocols of Lurie Children's.
Perform patient assessment and analyze laboratory and diagnostic data to assist in patient plan of care.

Initiate, monitor, and maintain therapeutic gases including heliox, nitric oxide, oxygen and nitrogen.
Evaluate the patient's progress through continuous observation and assessment of responses to interventions, treatments, and therapies and recommends revision in the care plan according to changes in patient needs.
Demonstrate knowledge of pertinent aspects and competency with protocols related to the use of chemical disinfection, high level disinfection, and sterilization as required.
Informed and up to date in respiratory care by utilizing current respiratory and healthcare literature for information and problem solving.
Communicate with the family and members of the multidisciplinary team to identify health care needs.
Anticipate impending emergent situations and intervenes effectively.

Specializes in Neurocritical care for infants with neurological problems, severe respiratory issues, lung disease, birth defects and other genetic disorders, and surgical intervention for complex surgical problems.
Cardiac Care Unit (CCU)-
High Tech, state-of-the-art, 48-bed unit, devoted to the care of young patients with cardiac disease.
Positions we are hiring for:
FT 36 hour: Night shift, 7p-7a,12-hour shifts
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate of a Center on Accreditation for Respiratory Care (CoARC) accredited program in respiratory care. Minimal requirement: Associate Degree.
Licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the state of Illinois, active and in good standing.
Active CRT (certified respiratory therapist) Credential from the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC.)
Basic Life Support Certification from American Heart Association.

Reporting to the Manager, Respiratory Care - Chicago or Director of Respiratory Care Services, and according to established policies, procedures, respiratory standards of care and practice and the direction of the medical staff, the Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) renders competent, humane, individualized care to every patient and the family. The RCP assesses, plans, implements and evaluates the delivery of respiratory care services to facilitate continuity of care through the continuum of services offered at RML. Provides age and developmentally appropriate care to adult and geriatric patients.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
Exemplifies the RML REACH (Service Excellence) culture by demonstrating respect, excellence, appreciation, concern, and honor in all interactions with patients, families, and co-workers, as identified in departmental and hospital-wide behavioral expectations.
Maintains accountability for the management of all respiratory care services required by assigned patients. Accepts and responds to written and verbal physician orders, participates in emergency and “code” situations, performs cardiopulmonary resuscitation, performs pulmonary assessments, administers and monitors patients' response to bronchodilators, performs blood gas analyses, performs stat electrolytic analyses, performs complex respiratory treatments, and manages patients on mechanical ventilation per physician order and approved RML ventilator weaning protocol.
Demonstrates clinical competence by consistently applying respiratory knowledge and performing within the scope of practice of a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the state of Illinois. Responsible for maintaining knowledge and skills appropriate to the respiratory needs of patients at RML (equipment, procedures, respiratory medications, etc.). Obtains necessary information and demonstrates competence prior to implementing new or unfamiliar care practices, or responsibly declines to provide assigned care and notifies supervisor until able to obtain the appropriate skill.
Executes the medical treatment plan by implementing MD orders for respiratory care. Seeks clarification on any unclear or questionable order by consulting with the ordering physician (or on-call physician after hours), prior to implementation. If the question is not resolved, the RCP refers the question to the Lead RCP for assistance, to the Clinical Supervisor, the Manager, of Respiratory Care Services, the Director of Respiratory Care Services, or to the V.P. Patient Care Services/ CNO as necessary for resolution.
Performs blood gas and electrolyte analysis as ordered by the physician, and is consistent with hospital policies. Reports problems in specimen management or equipment operation to the lead RCP or department director.
Assists in the assembly, disassembly, cleaning, and processing of respiratory therapy equipment according to department policies.
Works in a team environment with all other members of the healthcare team to provide patient-centered care. Works closely with other disciplines to define an individualized problem list and interventions. Correlates individualized patient care goals into an interdisciplinary patient care plan. Participates as requested in organized “staffing” meetings to discuss patient progress and revise goals.
Assesses patients' progress in accordance with established goals and initiates appropriate actions. Documents thoroughly in Meditech regarding patient's condition and interventions performed (e.g., medications given, treatments performed, etc.) Reports significant information to all appropriate individuals (change of shift report, change in condition to RN and/or MD, etc.). Ensures patient acuity is accurate for the assigned shifts in OptiLink.
Works closely with other disciplines and the care coordinator to ensure that interventions and patient care are timely and progress effectively in order to ensure patient and family readiness for discharge.
Maintains the basic human rights and confidentiality of each patient, family, and significant others in providing information and in delivering patient care. Is aware of and complies with applicable standards, regulations and laws related to healthcare workers and the care of hospitalized patients, including but not limited to pain management, confidentiality, abuse reporting, etc.
Observes and reports the emotional and spiritual needs of patients and assist in providing supportive care to them and their families.
Based upon the patient's age, developmental status, and level of function:
provides individualized clinical care
facilitates patient and family participation in care
demonstrates appropriate psychosocial interventions
evaluates environment safety and provides a safe clinical environment
Responsible for supporting a safe work environment for self and others, by reporting unsafe conditions, and by using appropriate safe work practices such as proper body mechanics and applicable safety devices (patient lift and transfer equipment, face and eye protection, sharps disposal, PPE, etc.)
Demonstrates knowledge of and consistently adheres to established precautions for infection control. Ensures that other healthcare workers and visitors are aware of and have the personal protective equipment available to appropriately interact with the patients under the RCP's care.
Participates in department performance improvement activities. Notes opportunities to improve patient safety, department operations, or respiratory care practices, and brings to the attention of the Lead RCP or department manager or director. Participates in department and facility committees and performance improvement teams. Implements all applicable components of patient safety goals.
Maintains effective colleague relationships with other members of the health care team through consistently professional and respectful communications. Actively participates in the educational development of healthcare students and participates in the formal and informal education of other team members. Participates in orienting and precepting new RCPs. Acts as preceptor for agency therapists, as assigned.
Actively participates in staff meetings and continuing education activities. Provides information and feedback to other staff members on related clinical and professional topics. Meets all employee requirements (PPD, CPR, annual review, performance evaluation, etc.) by demonstrating completion or participating in the required activity prior to expiration or due date.

1. Thorough knowledge of respiratory care procedures, equipment, and respiratory pharmacological agents to recommend and perform therapy.2. The physical ability for almost constant standing, walking, lifting, and moving patients and patient care equipment.5. Knowledge & Experience
1. Recent acute patient care experience, including adult patients requiring mechanical ventilation.2. Clinical competence documented by references based on respiratory care experience and education.
License/Certification
1. Completion of an AMA-approved respiratory therapy program.
2. Certification (CRT) or registration (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care, or eligible to take CRT exam within 6 months of hire. Must pass the exam to retain employment as RCP.
3. Current CPR.
1. Illinois state licensure is required.
2. ACLS preferred.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a patient care environment. May be exposed to hazardous materials, including but not limited to bloodborne pathogens and medical gases under pressure.
This role is eligible for a $7,500 sign-on bonus and is subject to the terms and conditions of the offer. Bonuses will be pro-rated for positions less than full-time (0.9 FTE). Registry positions are not bonus eligible. Rehires and current employees are not eligible.

Job Description
The Respiratory Care Practitioner Will:
Conducts patient assessments and interprets clinical data necessary for the delivery of quality patient care.
Implements and evaluates the plan of care related to respiratory procedures including but not limited to aerosol, secretion mobilization, and hyperinflation therapies.
Provides care for patients requiring ventilator assistance, complex respiratory devices and procedures.
Performs comprehensive ventilator management and monitors the cardiopulmonary status of patients receiving intensive respiratory care.
Maintains emergency airway equipment for patients with artificial airways. Performs diagnostic studies on patients as designated by department policy and/or by physician order.
Consults with physicians, nurses and other health care professionals and participates in daily patient rounds for assigned area to promote consistent quality and delivery of patient care.
Completes all documentation for patient charting in compliance with standards for accuracy and content as established by the department and SRAlab. Monitors and documents patient responses to therapeutic interventions and progress toward outcomes.
Assists with the development of clinical research protocols and participates in their implementation.
Performs other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of the SRAlab including meeting pre-specified work commitment for float pool employees as specified by the RCP team leader.

Reports directly to the Manager, Respiratory Care.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Required:
National Board of Respiratory Care RRT credential or CRT credential with a minimum of 5 years' experience in an acute inpatient setting and completion of RRT within 1 year of being hired.
In lieu of RRT credential will accept CRT credential with a minimum of 8 years' experience as a substitute.
Minimum 2 years of post-school experience as a RCP, one year should reflect experience in critical care.
Current Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) - Illinois Department of Professional Regulation License.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS) - American Heart Association. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - American Heart Association. Pediatric Advanced Cardiac Life Support (PALS)- American Heart Association.
Completion of a nationally accredited degree program in Respiratory Therapy.
Preferred:
Neonatal/ Pediatric Specialist (NPS)- National Board of Respiratory Care. Bachelor's Degree (BA/BS) or higher
Working Conditions
Normal office environment with little or no exposure to dust or extreme temperature. Exposure to moderately adverse working conditions in performing certain patient care activities. Occasional exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.

The Respiratory Care Practitioner/Sleep Technician performs all duties of Sleep Technologist I and II. This position performs comprehensive sleep testing analysis and comprehensive evaluation and treatment of respiratory related sleep disorders under the general supervision of the clinical director (M.D., D.O., and/or PH.D) or designee. This may involve polysomnography with ventilator and positive airway pressure titrations. Has the ability to complete administrative tasks as well as technical duties. This is a technical position with no supervisory responsibilities but can provide respiratory care guidance to all Polysomnographic Technologist.
Essential Job Functions:
Monitors and maintains mechanical ventilator, continuous positive pressure devices, oxygen and humidity devices.
Assesses patients and diagnostic data in order to adjust ventilator and positive airway pressure settings per protocol.
Assesses and evaluates the patient's respiratory care in consultation with physicians, nurses and other health care personnel.
Possesses adept clinical skill in manipulating ventilators and positive airway pressure equipment.
Troubleshoots basic ventilator and positive airway pressure equipment.
Scores sleep/wake stages and scoring clinical events (such as respiratory events cardiac events, limb movements, arousals, etc.) utilizing AASM (American Academy of Sleep Medicine) standards.
Generates accurate reports by tabulating sleep/wake and clinical event data
Demonstrate critical thinking and ability to work with minimal supervision to analyze complex situations and applies policy.
Evaluates the patient's progress through continuous observation and assessment of responses to interventions.
Maintain continuing education requirements for credential by reviewing literature and attending continuing education meeting and seminars.
Respond to sleep patients' procedural-related inquires by providing appropriate education utilizing sleep center protocols.
Calibrates, maintains, and troubleshoots equipment. Selects amplifier settings, obtains quality data, and analyzes data during recordings.
Perform data acquisition while monitoring study-tracing quality to ensure signals are artifact-free. Identify, correct and document artifact.
Implement appropriate interventions (including actions necessary for patient safety and therapeutic intervention such as positive airway pressure, oxygen administration, etc.)
Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.

Minimum Qualifications:
Graduate of a CoARC accredited associates degree program in respiratory care required.
Current licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner in the State of Illinois required.

Job Description
The Respiratory Care Practitioner:
