DESCRIPTION OF WORK
In this position, you will support the Program Aquatic Biologist Supervisor and team members in the operation of the Black Fly Suppression Program. Your responsibilities will include weekly collections of biological samples to determine the presence of black fly larvae in streams and rivers, assistance with black fly treatment operations, and conducting post treatment evaluations. Work will primarily be conducted within the Susquehanna River, Juniata River, and associated tributaries with occasional travel to other regions.

Full-time, limited-term employment (6 to 9 months) without benefits.
Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Performing field monitoring of erosion and sediment (E&S) controls on various types of construction Projects (linear and site-based) while working independently.

Required:

DESCRIPTION OF WORK
In this position, you will be responsible for conducting comprehensive statewide surveillance of tick species as part of the Tick Surveillance and Testing Program. Your duties will include performing laboratory analyses on biological samples to ascertain the age, sex, and species of ticks, as well as other arthropods when necessary. You will meticulously record and input field data from tick collections into the internal database, collaborating closely with Vector Management and regional personnel on investigative studies related to tick and arthropod activity. As a vital member of the statewide rapid response team addressing ticks and associated diseases, you will also contribute to the development of strategies alongside other program staff to enhance or innovate existing monitoring programs.
Additionally, you will prepare analyses and reports on Vector Management studies, collect aquatic samples using specialized equipment to assess water quality parameters, and gather samples of black flies or other macroinvertebrates for water quality evaluations. Your work will involve utilizing equipment to monitor environmental parameters during sampling, including continuous measurements of temperature, dissolved oxygen, and humidity. You will collect samples of mosquitoes, black flies, and ticks, using the data to inform various metrics that determine nuisance thresholds and assess disease risk. A GIS-based Oracle database will be employed to upload sampling data and establish sampling sites, with GIS technology utilized to generate maps upon request to illustrate sampling results and disease presence.
Furthermore, you will promote the Department's mission by inputting data in a prescribed format that adheres to the data quality standards outlined by guidance, training, and policy across all of DEP's electronic data systems, ensuring the accuracy and completeness of entries while minimizing duplicative entries and data quality issues through the use of system-specific tools. Lastly, you will assist in analyzing biological indices of vector populations to identify Integrated Pest Management (IPM) priorities based on potential risks to human health.

Work Environment

Position Summary

Position Overview and Responsibilities:
Three technicians will be hired from mid-April to mid-August 2026 to assist with estimating abundance and density of black bears in northcentral Florida. No bears will be captured or handled. Duties include installing barbed-wire hair corrals and collecting bear hair samples following a strict sampling protocol, collecting bait and other supplies, entering and correcting data, and other duties as assigned. Technicians will build corrals in a 2-person team but check them alone. A typical work week is 10 hours/day over 4 days with 3 days off, but technicians may be required to work extra days as needed to stay on schedule. The job will be strenuous, requiring technicians to hike off-trail in harsh weather conditions (e.g., high temperatures and humidity) in areas with biting insects and venomous snakes. Field housing will be provided but food expenses will not be covered. Technicians will be driving agency vehicles during work hours but will need their own transportation for personal time.

This Environmental Specialist II position serves as a Regional Soil Scientist within the Division of Public Health, providing technical oversight and regulatory support to local health departments across the southeastern region of North Carolina. Key Duties Include:
-Train and assess Environmental Health Specialist interns through classroom instruction, field exercises, and written examinations to determine readiness for delegation of authority.
- Authorize local Environmental Health Specialists to enforce state laws and rules governing on-site wastewater systems in accordance with statutory requirements.
- Provide technical assistance and second opinions to local health departments on complex site evaluations, permitting challenges, and malfunctioning wastewater systems.

APTIM Environmental & Infrastructure, LLC is seeking an entry level Environmental Scientist on a full-time basis to work in a client office in North Carolina to provide support related to environmental, safety, and other disciplines. The successful candidate must be available for in-person support daily at a location north of Charlotte. Tasks will include collaborating with various client staff on projects as needed, and working with the APTIM client manager to support other client activities outside the office. Related work experience up to 2 years.
Must have strong written and oral communication skills.
Strong computer skills desired, such as proficiency in Microsoft applications such as MS Excel, MS Word, SharePoint Online, etc. and the ability to learn other software applications.
Willing to work in the field and travel to complete work, as requested.
