Your Key Responsibilities

Education and Experience

- Minimum of one (1) year construction inspection experience on major roadway and/or bridge inspection projects is preferred.
- Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and/or Pennsylvania Turnpike experience preferred.

An opportunity exists for highly motivated, personable, and organized Environmental Scientist/Geologist looking to advance their career as part of our growing Team of Environmental Permitting and Assessment Professionals in Pennsylvania. The successful candidate will have regulatory and project management experience in Pennsylvania and New Jersey to provide strategic management and support to our clients in all regions of the state, collaborate with our multi-disciplinary staff on a variety of projects, and actively pursue new opportunities to grow the team. You will perform environmental assessment and remediation tasks to support environmental investigation and remediation projects at sites with contamination by materials such as solvents, petroleum fuels, metals, and PCBs. You can join a dynamic team working on large, technically engaging, and impactful projects located at active and inactive petroleum refining and storage facilities and other industrial facilities.
Your Key Responsibilities
* Organize and manage a variety of environmental investigation and remediation tasks such as ground water monitoring, soil boring/well installations, operation and maintenance, and other activities.
* Responsibilities will include a mix of office and field-based tasks and will include project execution, budgeting, scheduling, contracting, personnel supervision, compliance monitoring, data analysis/reduction, and technical reporting.
* Reporting and data reduction tasks may include preparation of site maps, soil boring logs, well construction diagrams, geologic cross sections, potentiometric surface maps, and possibly groundwater flow models.
* Field-based tasks will include coordination, supervision and execution of work that includes, but is not limited to, collecting soil, sediment, water and air samples; overseeing drilling of soil borings and installation of monitoring wells; performing hydraulic conductivity tests; excavation monitoring; use of instrumentation; overseeing subcontractors; and coordinating complex field tasks with multiple staff and subcontractors. The work may be associated with former manufactured gas plant (MGP) facilities, current/former refineries and petroleum processing/storage facilities, gas stations, as well as other commercial and industrial facilities in urban, rural, or undeveloped locations.
* Conduct Phase I Environmental Assessments and Preliminary Assessments.
* Complete applicable company and client-required health & safety training (including OSHA-required training) and follow health & safety policies and procedures.
* Follow established standards, policies, procedures, and guidelines to complete assignments.
* This position is within a larger environmental services team and will likely require providing support to multiple Stantec offices.
* Travel may be required. Work hours may be irregular and include overnight and weekend work shifts.

Fire protection systems detect, control and reduce fire and smoke in buildings and structures. FPEs recommend materials, equipment, and systems to assist in safeguarding life and property against fire, analyze how fire behaves and model how safety features perform in a fire. They assess the fire protection needs within projects and document those in design analysis or basis of design reports. They create design documents for fire protection systems, including drawings, using computer-aided design (CAD) or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, and specifications that are used to direct the construction of buildings and systems in the field. FPEs perform construction progress inspections and acceptance tests / commissioning to ensure that installed systems comply with the construction documents and applicable codes and that they function as intended. A Fire Protection Engineer performs engineering work under close supervision requiring the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out a sequence of related fire protection engineering tasks such as the preparation of simple plans, designs, calculations, costs and bills of material in accordance with established codes, standards and drawings. The role applies professional concepts and expands upon learning while performing various phases of engineering work receiving detailed instruction.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Apply concepts of fire protection engineering through investigation and analysis to support engineering projects that may include design of fire suppression systems (sprinklers and standpipes, water supply, special hazard extinguishing systems), fire detection and alarm systems, and smoke control systems, selection of fire-resistant materials and assemblies, and development of egress strategies.
- Perform calculations to analyze and design engineering system components using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software.
- Gather information to support design decisions.
- Prepare engineering designs, drawings, specifications, presentations and reports with guidance from senior engineers.
- Verify compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards and practices.
- Work with other architecture and engineering design professionals in the coordination and delivery of projects under the direction of a senior engineer.
- Provide support services during construction, including submittal reviews, response to requests for information and contract document clarifications, construction progress inspections and acceptance testing.
- Perform other duties as assigned by senior engineering staff.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Knowledge of, and experience interpreting and applying, building and fire codes and NFPA standards.
- Knowledge of active and passive fire protection systems, including fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, smoke control systems, fire resistive construction and egress systems.

Minimum of Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or other closely related engineering discipline with an emphasis in Fire Protection Engineering coursework.

* Organize and manage a variety of environmental investigation and remediation tasks such as ground water monitoring, soil boring/well installations, operation and maintenance, and other activities.
* Responsibilities will include a mix of office and field-based tasks and will include project execution, budgeting, scheduling, contracting, personnel supervision, compliance monitoring, data analysis/reduction, and technical reporting.
* Reporting and data reduction tasks may include preparation of site maps, soil boring logs, well construction diagrams, geologic cross sections, potentiometric surface maps, and possibly groundwater flow models.
* Field-based tasks will include coordination, supervision and execution of work that includes, but is not limited to, collecting soil, sediment, water and air samples; overseeing drilling of soil borings and installation of monitoring wells; performing hydraulic conductivity tests; excavation monitoring; use of instrumentation; overseeing subcontractors; and coordinating complex field tasks with multiple staff and subcontractors. - EITs to join our growing North America Fire Protection Engineering Team. We are better together. Fire Protection Engineers (FPEs) protect lives and property. They plan and design engineering projects that prevent fires from occurring and minimize the impact of those fires that do occur. Fire protection systems detect, control and reduce fire and smoke in buildings and structures. FPEs recommend materials, equipment, and systems to assist in safeguarding life and property against fire, analyze how fire behaves and model how safety features perform in a fire. They assess the fire protection needs within projects and document those in design analysis or basis of design reports. They create design documents for fire protection systems, including drawings, using computer-aided design (CAD) or Building Information Modeling (BIM) software, and specifications that are used to direct the construction of buildings and systems in the field. FPEs perform construction progress inspections and acceptance tests / commissioning to ensure that installed systems comply with the construction documents and applicable codes and that they function as intended. - EIT performs engineering work under close supervision requiring the application of standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out a sequence of related fire protection engineering tasks such as the preparation of simple plans, designs, calculations, costs and bills of material in accordance with established codes, standards and drawings. The role applies professional concepts and expands upon learning while performing various phases of engineering work receiving detailed instruction.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Apply general concepts of fire protection engineering through investigation and analysis to support engineering projects that may include design of fire suppression systems (sprinklers and standpipes, water supply, special hazard extinguishing systems), fire detection and alarm systems, and smoke control systems, selection of fire-resistant materials and assemblies, and development of egress strategies.
- Perform basic calculations to analyze and design engineering system components using company standard software and proprietary manufacturer software.
- Gather information to support design decisions.
- Assist team in preparing engineering designs, drawings, specifications, presentations and reports.
- Verify compliance with applicable codes and engineering standards and practices.
- Work with other architecture and engineering design professionals in the coordination and delivery of projects under the direction of a senior engineer.
- Assist the team in providing support services during construction, including submittal reviews, response to requests for information and contract document clarifications, construction progress inspections and acceptance testing.
- Perform other duties as assigned by senior engineering staff.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Basic knowledge of interpretation and application of building and fire codes and NFPA standards.
- Knowledge of active and passive fire protection systems, including fire suppression systems, fire detection and alarm systems, smoke control systems, fire resistive construction and egress systems.
- Ability to participate and collaborate in project team setting with internal and external clients.
- Strong technical writing, presentation and interpersonal skills.
- Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD.
- Experience with Fire Dynamics Simulator, Contam, Pathfinder and other computer modeling software is a plus.
Education and Experience
Minimum of Bachelor of Science Degree in Fire Protection Engineering or other closely related engineering discipline with an emphasis in Fire Protection Engineering coursework.
Zero to three years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as those listed above.
Engineer in Training (EIT) / Engineering Intern (EI) preferred, working towards obtaining Fire Protection Professional Engineer (P.E.) licensure.

Your Opportunity
As a Mechanical Engineer, your role in our professional consulting services team is to work independently on multidisciplinary projects of various complexity as a discipline leader, through all phases of a project lifecycle. You are responsible for leading the design of HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems on municipal water treatment plants, pumping stations, wastewater treatment plants, hydroelectric power plants, and private industrial water applications in different locations across North America. Every project has its own unique challenges, and you are considered a resource for solutions to those challenges.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design of HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems for various projects from preliminary design through bid and construction phases.
- Develop basis of design reports (BODR) and technical memorandums for small-to- medium size projects, setting criteria for following design stages.
- Develop design documents including drawings, specifications, and opinion of probable construction costs (OPCC).
- Respond to RFIs, review submittals and shop drawings, and attend construction site visits for design compliance.
- Develop HVAC calculations including building cooling and heating load calculations, air distribution system sizing, and hydronic distribution system sizing.
- Develop Plumbing calculations including domestic water, sanitary waste, and storm water systems sizing.
- Apply design codes and standards based on the project needs.
- Coordinate design with other design disciplines throughout the life of a project.
- Assist with mentoring engineers in training (EIT) to develop and strengthen their skills and technical abilities.
- Travel to job sites in your state of residence and other states (5%)
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- In-depth understanding of HVAC engineering fundamentals such as psychrometric chart, refrigeration cycle and heat transfer.
- Experience in designing HVAC and Plumbing systems. Fire Protection design is a plus.
- Strong familiarity with design codes and standards of practice.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong understanding of all phases of project deliverables.
- Ability to lead one or more projects simultaneously.
- Experience with HVAC load calculation software - HAP or Trace.
- Strong knowledge of AutoCAD and Revit.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in designing HVAC, Plumbing, and Fire Protection systems for water treatment plants, wastewater treatment plants, pumping stations, chemical storage rooms, and hydroelectric power plants.
- Familiarity with NFPA 820 requirements for HVAC systems serving wastewater treatment plants.
- Strong client presentation skills.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering.
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE). NCEES record ready to obtain Professional Engineering licensure.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience
