1925

Brothers Richard and Donald Rheem founded Rheem Manufacturing Company in Emeryville, Calif., in 1925.

Innovative entrepreneurs, by 1930 the brothers had incorporated the Rheem Manufacturing Company.

1938

1938: A second factory is constructed in Nagoya.

1939

In 1939 Rheem formed a 50-50 joint venture with Australia's BHP, setting up a factory in Waterloo.

1940

By 1940 Alice liked Moraga so much she decided the couple would make this town their permanent home, leaving Piedmont.

1941

In 1941 Donald bought 14 acres at the Orinda Crossroads and built the Orinda Theater.

1945

Kobayashi resumed production in 1945 almost directly following the end of the war.

1948

Around 1948 Rheem Blvd (then called Irvine Drive), once a mere dirt trail, was privately graded and built by Donald.

1952

1952: The Paloma brand name is launched.

1954

By October 1954, 20,000 square foot Clark’s Market opened, the first completely air-conditioned market in Contra Costa.

1957

June 12, 1957 saw the opening of the Rheem Theater with 1,000 loge seats, which had cost $750,000 to build.

1959

Donald Rheem Elementary School was built in 1959 on land given to the Moraga School District, thanks to the persuasiveness of Superintendent Charlie Toll.

1961

In 1961 the Shopping Center contained a bakery, restaurant, barber shop, furniture store, general offices, bowling alley, hardware store, sporting goods store, music shop, plant nursery, real estate offices, service station, dime store, and women’s wear store.

1968

In 1968, Paloma added a second factory, in Fukuoka.

1972

The company had by then earned recognition for the innovation and quality of its products, winning, for example, a design award from the Ministry of Trade and Industry, for a newly launched gas rice cooker in 1972.

1973

By then, however, Rheem had sold off parts of its global network, including its share of its Australia operations, to BHP in 1973.

1973: Paloma Industries Inc. is established in Chicago.

The Rheems left the location of the former Moraga Rancho with the sale of the Rheem Center to the Dohemann Development Company in 1973.

1977

In 1977 the company launched a new system for preventing incomplete combustion in its water heaters.

1985

The company marked another industry first in 1985 with the début of a pulsating combustion unit that provided greater fuel efficiency.

1986

The company then adapted its pulse technology to a line of boilers in 1986.

1988

In 1988, the company opened its research and development laboratory in Sapporo.

1993

The company began building a new factory, in Hokkaido Noboribetsu, which was completed in 1993.

1993: Paloma opens a new factory in Hokkaido.

1994

Rheem also expanded as part of the Paloma group, opening a new production facility in Arkansas in 1994.

1998

1998: Paloma opens a new complex in Tokyo.

2004

2004: Paloma reports sales of ¥240 billion ($2 billion).
