In October of 1891, she and her husband again hosted a group in their Main Street home and, this time, they successfully founded the Richmond Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
After its formation in 1891 at the beginning of the humane movement in this country, the Richmond SPCA struggled with inadequate funding.
Ellen Glasgow cared passionately about animals and was President of the Board of the Richmond SPCA for 21 years until her death in 1945.
MHS helps draft the Large Carnivove Act (Act 274 of 2000), which bans ownership of a number of non-domestic animals.
The MHS Detroit shelter operates out of this facility until August of 2016.
