Richmond Times-Dispatch company history timeline

1850

The Richmond Times-Dispatch traces its beginnings to 1850 with the founding of the Richmond Dispatch by James A. Cowardin.

1890

In 1890, Bryan changed the newspaper’s name to the Richmond Times.

1896

In 1896, Bryan also acquired The Manchester Leader and launched the Evening Leader.

1903

Formed in 1903 with the merger of the Times and the Dispatch, the Times Dispatch of Richmond quickly emerged as Virginia's primary newspaper of record.

1904

In any case, the Times-Dispatch had grown--with a circulation by 1904 of 8,000 for the Wednesday edition, 9,000 for the morning edition, and 10,500 for Sunday.

1908

Bryan died in 1908, but in a mere six years he had firmly established the Times-Dispatch as a major southern paper.

1914

For the next ten years, Sunday circulation saw modest growth with a paid circulation of 33,000 by 1916, while the daily edition increased modestly to 22,000.

1927

Bryan also purchased The Tampa Tribune in 1927.

1935

Richmond Christmas Mother Fund was founded by The News Leader in 1935, with the goal of helping the needy during the holidays.

1940

In 1940 The News Leader and the competing Times-Dispatch formed Richmond Newspapers Inc., with the Bryan family owning 54% of the company.

1944

After his father’s death in 1944, D. Tennant Bryan was named president and publisher of the Times-Dispatch and the News Leader.

1948

In 1948, Virginius Dabney of the Richmond Times-Dispatch won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished editorial writing during the year.

1963

1992

In 1992, the Richmond Times-Dispatch and The Richmond News Leader merged into a single morning publication under the Times-Dispatch name, and printing operations were moved to a state-of-the-art printing facility in Hanover, Va.

1994

1995

In 1995, The Times-Dispatch launched a new online service, Gateway Virginia.

1999

In 1999, The Times-Dispatch opened a downtown office building at 300 E. Franklin St, on the site of several earlier buildings.

2000

The Richmond Times-Dispatch building gets a new sign over the Franklin Street entrance on March 23, 2000.

2005

28, 2005, on the topic of Richmond’s proposed performing arts center.

2007

On Saturday, June 23, 2007, a three-alarm fire struck The Times-Dispatch printing plant in Hanover County.

2008

In 2008, Richmond.com was purchased by Media General from TWG Portals LLC of Richmond.

2010

In 2010, The Times-Dispatch launched PolitiFact Virginia in partnership with PolitiFact.com, a Pulitzer Prize-winning website of the Tampa Bay Times.

2011

In 2011, the newspaper launched Work it, Richmond, website and e-mail newsletter focusing on small business.
