The supervisory outpatient coder provides oversight of a group of Medical Records Technicians, with administrative responsibility for planning and directing the work of subordinate staff. Duties include but are not limited to: * Performs a comprehensive review of the patient health record to abstract medical, surgical, ancillary, demographic, social, and administrative data to ensure complete data capture. * Performs a full range of supervisory responsibilities, to include evaluating the performance of subordinate staff, approving sick and annual leave requests, identifying educational or training needs, resolving employee complaints and taking disciplinary actions, when necessary. * Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines and conventions when choosing the most appropriate diagnosis, operation, procedure, ancillary, or Evaluation and Management code to ensure ethical, accurate, and complete coding. * Develops performance standards and conducts performance evaluations for subordinate staff. Interviews new employees, recommends selection, and carries out training and development of reassignments, awards or disciplinary action. * Prepares workload and production reports; reports on operations and problems encountered; and presents proposed requests for resource needs based on past experience, anticipated staffing, equipment, and space. * Conducts provider training to improve health record documentation for the episodes of care provided. Has constant interaction with health care providers evaluating and communicating with the expectation on improving health record documentation which will result in improved patient care and improved revenue generation. * Keeps abreast of all regulations and guidelines governing the coding section, ensuring that staff supervised is educated as needed. Ensures that regulatory guidelines and current coding conventions are followed. The Medical Support Assistant (MSA) is responsible for performing a variety of technical support duties that facilitate the work of physicians, physician assistants, nurses, nursing assistants, and other members of the medical facility who provide direct patient care. MSAs are considered chief sources of patient care and patient flow information. The Medical Support Assistant performs clerical work in support of the care and treatment given to patients. The incumbent will work within a primary care team. The incumbent performs duties related to scheduling per the National Scheduling Directive and will interface with personal computer (PC) applications and Federal Electronic Health Record (EHR). The incumbent will also function as either a Collaborative Care Manager (CoCM) or Co-located Collaborative Care (CCC) to assist in the delivery of evidence-based care for primary care patients identified with a variety of emotional, psychiatric, and behavioral medicine concerns. The ACOS of GEC and HBPC Services must possess the knowledge to provide oversight and leadership to geriatric care, hospice & palliative care and home-based primary care to a diverse group of aging Veterans. * Supervise and coordinate operations of the GEC and the HBPC program. Works independently as a Primary Care Manager for a designated population of patients and works IAW methods and practices of the medical profession and locally established policies. The HBPC team physician, in collaboration with the HBPC team, is responsible for: * Serves as a Home-Based Primary Care (HBPC) Physician and Primary Care Manager (PCM) at the VANCHCS. * Responsible for the primary care of veteran population beneficiaries. * Scope of services include, but are not limited to, examination, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of medical, surgical, gynecological, pediatric, and orthopedic care. A Board Certified or Board Eligible Family Physician is required. * Examines authorized beneficiaries to determine presence and extent of diseases, injuries, or conditions. * Determines the need for a variety of diagnostic procedures and orders laboratory tests, x-rays, or other procedures necessary to complete medical facts on the case; interprets findings and tests results; makes diagnosis; and prescribes course of treatment to include referral to another specialist, consultant, or hospital. * Refers cases involving diseases or conditions presenting serious problems or conflicting symptoms to higher authority for consultative or diagnostic advice. * Provides clinical oversight of non-credentialed healthcare providers assisting with the provision of care and may serve as a physician supervisor to one or more Nurse Practitioners (NP's) or Physician Assistants (PA's). This responsibility includes medical records review and direct observation of the provider. * Provides after-hours and weekend telephone on-call from home as scheduled by the supervisor. * Performs the following procedures: reduction of simple fractures, emergency delivery, joint aspiration/injection, ECG performance and initial interpretation, interpretation of basic radiographs, regional anesthesia, splinting/casting/ immobilization of simple fractures, crisis intervention, and basic life support (BLS). These duties require completion of a Family Practice Residency, Board Certification or Board Eligibility in Family Practice, and BLS certification. * Duties include the use of automated systems (i.e. VISTA) to enter clinical orders, ancillary services, and prescriptions; completion of workload accountability documents (i.e., manpower accountability documents (i.e. CPRS) on a weekly basis. * Participates in the clinic performance improvement and risk management activities as necessary, to include, but not limited to, peer review and chart review. * Attends other mandatory training as directed by supervisor or command.
